Warriors arrive in Lewiston; Chance meetings in Pullman and downtown Honolulu
By Dave Reardon
LEWISTON, Idaho >> The Hawaii flight was a little late; Ben Yee and I are sitting in the lobby of the Red Lion Hotel, and we’re told the bus is “right around the corner.”
And here they are, all accounted for. Colt Brennan is not limping.
A few minutes after the Warriors arrive, five young adult fans arrive — Jerel Hight, Michael Rux, Jason Rodger, Kayla Cervantes and Nick Simons.
“I live by the airport and saw them coming in,” Rux said.
They are all genuine fans, not just trying to get autographs to sell on ebay. Warrior Nation is indeed growing.

PULLMAN, Wash. >> One of our more frequent posters, who goes by the crazy handle of “Kyle,” just walked into the Pullman Starbuck’s that I’m camping out at right now and introduced himself.
Kyle is a Ph.D. candidate at Washington State. He’s wearing his Cougars colors right now, but promises to be in green, including face paint, at the Kibbie Dome on Saturday. He says hello to his family and friends on Maui.

Also forgot to mention earlier that I bumped into Derrick Low’s dad, Ken, while coming out of traffic court on Tuesday. Ken said Derrick will also trade Cougs red for Warrior green on Saturday night in Moscow.

Dave: I appreciate the information that you and Cindy provide in this forum. I’ll read ST’s blog only in the morning because there’ll be too many posts by the afternoon (there’s currently 313 posts)and they tend to get sidetracked from UH sports.
Anyway I have a couple of questions as you sip your Starbucks latte:
1. Is HF negotiating with Lee Steinberg on JJ’s contract? Will the suit by the women’s track and field coach force UH to disclose the private donors? Do the assistant coaches negotiate or do they have established civil service salary ranges?
2. Any insight on Coach Trapasso’s application at Cal Irvine? Where is UH in the installation of the new turf at Murakami and is the delay a reason for his interest in leaving?
3. Were you able to see any of the new UH basketball players in the summer leagues? How did they look?

D: What is the “rule” or “rule of thumb” regarding a journalist’s obligation to report updates on the anticipated lineup or potential signficant changes/developments due to, e.g., injuries, travel squad, missed flight, etc. Is the “rule” that no reports on these kinds of things get published within a certain number of days/hours prior to a game? Just curious.

I’ve heard rumblings negotiations have started, but can’t confirm this since June and Herman are very tight-lipped. Steinberg handles all such matters for Jones.
Regarding the lawsuit, an editor at the Star-Bulletin (not in sports) who has lots of experience with such items called the suit “frivolous.”
Grapevine says two bidders remain in contention for the Murakami contract.
Mike Trapasso knew Mike Gillespie was a virtual shoe-in for the Irvine job — that job has become one of the best in the country overnight, so when they called Trapasso he had to go.
Sorry, did not see any hoops this summer. We’ll get Jason to weigh in on the fellas.

Friday is generally off limits on things like injuries, trick plays, etc. Sometimes I take the time off, sometimes I go to the walk-through to get background info.
But if real news were to break out, for example, God forbid, a bus crash or something of that nature, then of course we must report. Hasn’t happened yet
Usually we don’t talk to players or coaches on Friday, but last week June Jones offered up that Colt would play — which we went with, and then he didn’t.

Dear Dave,
I’m sure you must be looking for things to do while in the Palouse. If you have time, go the “Ferdinands”. This is the on campus creamery at WSU. THey make their own ice cream and also a variety of cheese. The premier cheese is the “cougar gold”. This a one of kind of cheese that goes great with wine. You can purchase in cans and they travel well. Bring some back to Hawaii and your friends will be impressed with this cheese. At Ferdinands, they also have the fresh curds of this cheese also.
The canned cheese can also be ordered and mailed.
I spent 8 years in Pullman and go back each year for a WSU football game and steelhead fishing. I always make a stop at the creamery.
Have fun at the game. aloha.

Thanks for the tip Richard. I love cheese, so I’ll try to find my way there.

Went to the Kibbie Dome two years ago and got a kick out of the “basketball court” football field, complete with the goalposts attached to the end walls. What impressed me most was the friendliness of the people. Guy walked up and started talking to me and my son, come to find out he spots for Idaho and is also a professor of biology. Wanted to know all about the team. I told him to watch out for Colt as he will be a shoe-in All-American in a couple of years!
Now for the good stuff, there’s a great Mexican restaurant in downtown Moscow (whose name escapes me now). Great food and margaritas.

Hi Dave,
In case you didn’t catch the Boise St./S.Miss. game last night, ESPN color guy, Craig James called out UH, saying that they didn’t deserve to be ranked in the top 25 for several reasons (ie schedule, close win at LaTech, etc..). However, the biggest reason that he claimed that UH shouldn’t be there is because the defense just doesn’t mesure up to a top 25 team. He discounted the blowout of UNLV after Wisconsin just barely got out of Vegas alive. Maybe you should pass on Craig James’ sentiments on to Coach McMackin and the rest of the defensive personnel.

Maybe I’ll send Mr. James an email asking him if he could further elaborate with a post on this blog.
