Checking on the WNVL

July 9th, 2010

This is the pro league that was discussed at the final four in December. They have a web site up ( and have announced five teams with a sixth TBA. Looks like there is a franchise opportunity for someone there. Organizers said Honolulu was in the mix, but that was 7 months ago. supposed to start in 2011.

A bit surprised they have 3 teams in Florida. Miami, Orlando and Tampa Bay. Atlanta and Chicago. With Mick Haley and Jerritt Elliott on board, where is Los Angeles and/or Austin.

I will be very interested in this league if they draft former wahine stars. I would love to see Victoria Prince, Kanoe Kamanao and Lily Kahumuko play again ( if they have any interest to play in this league at all)

The sixth team will end up being in MN or WS. Seemingly the league is going for a ‘wider’ distribution of VB. SoCal, HI, and TX all know (and love) their vb to begin with.

The ‘market’ is to expand the midwest’s and east coast’s awareness of vb–than hopefully one day go entirely mainstream across the continent.

I’m certain that Prince is deffinitely in the mix. The producers are going for the aethetics, if you know what I mean, of vb as well as playing ability (perhaps even more so than pure skill). Tall and blonde is mostly what you’ll find on the initial franchises.

Anyway, I’d like to see how ‘catty’ the reality show ends of being. So many females; so very much estrogen. ;-)

      I stand corrected…

The sixth and final team for the 2011 season is Omaha, NE.

Would’ve been nice if it had been HI, though. :-)

Can’t foresee this being a successful venture. Will players be willing to relocate for a short season, bad economy, competition for the entertainment dollar, salaries, travel cost, lodging, marketing, medical, liability insurance. Too many enteries on the wrong side of the business ledger.

It’s going to be interesting. supposed to be tied in with a TV show, much like Big Brother meets Survivor. but keeping the athletic side serious. Prince would be a big draw, especially if she brings along the K-Fed connection (her fiance). Lots of good ex-Hawaii players who would be in the mix. And the organizer told me Honolulu was very possible. we’ll see what happens.
