Cobey Shoji Hutzler gave birth Sunday morning to Micah Knight Hutzler 7.7 pounds, 20 3/4 inches.

Interesting. ESPN columnist, Mechelle Voelper, has her own volleyball “power” ranking. She has Hawaii 4th and Stanford #1, Penn State #2, and Texas #3. Texas has been very impressive lately, sweeping through the Big 12 opponents with ease.
She has been a voice of reason nationally. Spot on with her analysis of the 2011 seedings last year.
Washington comes back to win the match. They were down 10-6 in the 5th set but came back to win 17-15

Looks like UH got a new commitment from CSI’s Keani Passi
walking on next year but could end up getting a s cholarship in 2014.

There are two shorties at 5’8″ playing at high level, Janisa Johnson at the Beach, and Cassie Strickland at UDub.

At 5’9, there is no way she is going to beat out Nikki Taylor, at 6’4, on the RS.
I wouldn’t bet on that, ever heard of Cassie Strickland of Washington at 5’8″ starting at OH over all the trees there on that team.
I doubt anyone has seen her play!
If everyone returns on the OH position, there will be some kind of battle for the RS, next year, between Goodman, Olevao, Kastl, and now Nikki Taylor.
Nikki will end on the the leftside eventually, knowing Dave Shoji!!
Only if Dave does not recruit someone better, for 2014 and beyond.
Just because she’s 5’9 doesn’t mean she can’t win the position…she might be short, but remember we had experience players who were short and still manage to put down the ball…..we all know that it’s not about height but it’s about being the smartest and well rounded player. With goodman and olevao playing on the right side I think hawaii will be set perfectly next year….the girl keani will redshirt when she come down so she can have 2 years of eligibility.
… sometimes it’s about height … not always … but sometimes.

I can’t wait to see if hawaii will end up with more transfer coming to the team….thats if they will be more. I also can’t wait for hawaii to get 2 of the girls that they have been talking about. Emilie from Canby, Oregon and this other girl from new zealand….big recruit for hawaii especially because these 2 girls have the height.
Why are Hawai`i fans so fascinated by 5’8- 5’9 local kine, menehunas in this sport ?
My wife,a local girl, says that it’s because the majority of the female volleyball players here are smaller in stature so smaller local girls who excel in a sport of tall trees are , for a lack of better words , looked up to.
That makes sense to me but the reality is this is a sport that pretty much requires height in todays world.
Height is important but not nearly as important as Skill and athleticism, and Passi seems to have that since she is her League’s player of the year and has led CSI to an undefeated record.
This is the same junior college that Aneli Cubi Otineru played at, Aneli was also about 5’9 and was VERY Important in getting UH to the final four.
I agree with you, Aneli had that volleyball instinct, which according to Dave, that this team lacks. The only one with volleyball instinct, on this team right now, is Jane Croson. If this girl has that volleyball instinct, she will help the Wahine.
Long Beach State just added a 6’4 OH today.
A 6’4 OH that doesn’t even touch over 10 feet, no thanks! ( i looked her club info up)
That’s exactly what Shoji looks for when considering a recruit, jumping ability. Passi at 5’10″ probably can out jump this 6’4″ Beach recruit, thus the reason for recruiting her, and probably has better skills in all phases.
And Hawaii adds 6′ 4″ Nikki Taylor.
We forget Kanani Danielson. She was billed as 5′ 10″, but I thought she was closer to 5′ 9″.

With future Wahine at 6’4″, has Hawai’i had any OHs that tall in the past. Who were some of the tall Wahines to play OH?

A good read on Volleytalk about the seedings of teams, with Q&A with NCAA selection committee member. It seems like they will consider not only RPI, but also Pablo and AVCA rankings into their seedings.
Thank you for pointing that out. We have been saying that RPI is not everything. People have worked very hard to get the NCAA selection committee to look at more than a computer ranking, especially the AVCA coaches poll.
With all this talk about height, people recall what happened with the Chinese club team with players at the ages of USA college level going unbeaten playing UCLA, USC, Stanford and California with a team height considered small. Yes height matters, but if you aren’t quick, skilled and don’t have that jumping ability you will get beat as this Chinese team and Nittaidai did to UH in preseason.
