Croson update

September 14th, 2010
By

It’s been buried on other threads.
UH recruit Jane Croson and another teammate were suspended from the team following an incident at a school dance Aug. 27. She was ranked No. 7 on prepvolleyball.com

This originally from yabba dabba do
Online sports out of Orange County reported that Croson and Lawless were suspended for some unknown actions at a school dance on Aug 27th and school policy is for players to be suspended for nine weeks following infractions, that would mean Oct 29th for both.

With only two matches left in the regular season by that date I doubt that she would rejoin the team although we never know .

Los Al is presently 3-1 without her.

There was also a quote from her coach Tawa saying it was ‘small potatoes.”

It appears that I can now post links this is the story on Croson .

  • warriorfan September 14, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Well the positive for Jane is this will give her time to rest her body since she has been playing volleyball non stop all year.

  • longboarder September 14, 2010 at 4:03 pm

At least she can’t get hurt.

I wonder what Coach thinks. Has something like this happened in the past with a verbally committed recruit?

    • Cindy Luis September 14, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Kaufman had an issue from a volleyball match that prevented her from competing in the state high jump.

  • yabba dabba doo September 14, 2010 at 4:06 pm

That Lawless kid is one libero who I bet will a scholarship from someone.

  • Warrior15 September 14, 2010 at 4:42 pm

I’m sure kids/recruits have had issues or gotten into trouble in the past. The difference today being a combination of the internet and anxious fans who can easily track what’s happening with them.

Just gotta let them be kids … they’ll learn from their mistakes, and hopefully she’ll be a stronger player (and person) for it when she steps foot on campus.

  • KonaWarrior September 14, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Cindy, do you think Jane will be free to pursue other volleyball type activities (eg. club, beach) concurrently now that she won’t be able to compete with her school? Any restrictions imposed upon her by either the school or Dave?

  • Cindy Luis September 14, 2010 at 5:57 pm

I wouldn’t know if there are any restrictions placed on her by the high school. what other activities do you mean? club is not in season, nor is there a beach outlet.
As for Shoji … she hasn’t officially signed. I’m sure he’s in contact with the family.

  • warriorfan September 14, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Is there a coaches show this week?

    • Cindy Luis September 14, 2010 at 6:26 pm

yes, there is a coach’s show Wednesday

  • yabba dabba doo September 14, 2010 at 6:26 pm

She is free to play club when the season starts same for anything to do with the USA program like beach or JO’s. The high school can’t tell her what she can do outside of high school.

    • Cindy Luis September 14, 2010 at 7:03 pm

Thanks YDD. that’s what I was getting at. What restrictions could there be? but there aren’t any other vb things going on during HS season. Sounds like she’d be eligible to return for last two weeks of regular season and be available for playoffs IF the team wants her back.

      • KonaWarrior September 14, 2010 at 7:23 pm

I guess what I was referring to would be any type of non-sanctioned or not organized type activity where former high school players play in to either stay in shape or keep in touch with competative volleyball. You see some former basketball players play in these pick up game type situations and some end up with serious injuries, possibly career ending. Being at a highly competative level, I am guessing that Jane wouldn’t be sitting around not being somehow involved with high level players to keep her skill level at its best and ready for the next level.

        • yabba dabba doo September 14, 2010 at 7:41 pm

To make a long story short she can do whatever she wants with who ever she wants. The school has no control over what she does unless she is on school property or at a school function.

  • yabba dabba doo September 14, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Utah State beat BYU in 5 and New Mexico State lost to New Mexico in 5 tonight.

  • cocobean September 14, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Missed last week’s show. Is it at 600PM?

Hope to hear Steve and Lyle call in to voice their opinions.

I’m too chicken to call in but I would like to know what Dave thinks about the team’s progress. At this point in the season are they where he thought they’d be. Or are they ahead or behind his expectations.

Liz was his first scholarship Libero, will there be another. We do have a long history of developing defensive specialists from the deep pool of local walk-ons but the value of a scholarship worthy defensive player can be seen in other top 10 schools.

    • Cindy Luis September 14, 2010 at 7:01 pm

Show is 6=7 p.m. doubt it would do any good to ask Shoji about it since he can’t talk about recruits until after they’ve signed. which is not until Nov.

    • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 11:04 am

Why be chicken? call. 296-1420. you have good questions.

  • dino September 14, 2010 at 9:02 pm

Maybe Jane should just transfer to Punahou, should fit in with all the other high profile students and alleviate the insecurities some have about her signing on to our team.LOL.Looking forward to the newest BAD GIRL WAHINE

    • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 11:03 am

I wouldn’t call Croson a bad girl. We don’t know what happened. How many of us at 17 made mistakes … and just didn’t get caught?

      • ingoodstanding September 15, 2010 at 1:19 pm

        This is VERY true, Cindy!!!

        Oh my, da ‘skeletons’…

  • Putter September 15, 2010 at 8:25 am

Lawless? LOL. The article says her name is Lawmaster. Was that intentional? :)

    • I support Dani September 15, 2010 at 9:43 am

That may have been a slip of the tongue . There is a 2012 6’3 OH named Haley Lawless who many say UH would like to get.

  • ingoodstanding September 15, 2010 at 9:27 am

    Okay…

With all this talk about Croson, where does she fit into the line-up next year?

Any body want to speculate about positioning(s) for next years team? Does Kanani dare take the challange of Libero conversion???

Hewitt is MB1, and Mita is setter…
    What do others think?

    • ingoodstanding September 15, 2010 at 9:28 am

      “year’s” and “challenge”

    • Steven September 15, 2010 at 10:35 am

      ingoodstanding:

Hewitt and Hartong (MB), Uiato (Setter) unless Shoji wants to still sit her, Kanani (OH), I see Croson replacing either Waber or Satele on the outside, not unless Shoji decides to sit her too.

    • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 10:51 am

IGS, will not be playing libero. Believe they may look at Stauber as the L.

    • Mike September 15, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Dave mentioned Croson will play left so I’m assuming she’ll be L2 and also said Waber is a natural left, so I’m assuming Kanani, Croson on the left, Chanteal on the right, Hewitt and Hartong in the middle, Mita setter, Lelepali at libero and Maeda at ds. Goodman and Waber will provide depth.

      • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 9:03 pm

surprised he was talking about Croson since she hasn’t officially signed. they’re going to have depth. no surprise if Lelepali ends up as the L.

        • ingoodstanding September 16, 2010 at 9:41 am

Is this Lelepali girl any relation to one, Bonnie L. (a great player in her own day, I’m recalling, @ BYU-Hi.)???

      • Shoji_Fan September 15, 2010 at 11:12 pm

i just want to clarify one thing: Dave did not, at any time, talk about Jane Croson. It was Scott Robbs who spoke of Jane.

Mike, please know that this post is in no way an attack on you. not at all… if i do sound as if i am verbally attacking you, i apologise. i just want it known that Dave did not violate any NCAA rules.

      • ingoodstanding September 16, 2010 at 9:45 am

Sorry about being the one (here) to usually play devil’s advocate, BUT…

*STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BRING HOME THE BIG ‘W’!!! :-(

  • I support Dani September 15, 2010 at 9:36 am

Lets get through this year first.

    • ingoodstanding September 15, 2010 at 9:55 am

Hopes are that this year’s team does not drop a set to the rest of their opponents. NMSU, USU, 1st/2nd rounds of NCAA will bode well for ratings (RKPI-I think that’s what they’re calling VB’s RPI) & it sets the program up for years to come.

Truly, there should be no reason that UH goes 4 or 5 with their remaining teams/schedule. :-)

…& PUT EMILY HARTONG ON THE LEFT; SHE IS YOUR THIRD/FORTH TERMINAL HITTER ON THE TEAM!!! W/OUT PASSING–WHICH THIS TEAM IS, A BIT, INFAMOUS FOR–75% OF THE TIME SETS ARE HEADED TO THE OUTSIDE…WABER IS OKAY, BUT EMILY WANTS THE BALL MORE (WITH CONFIDENCE/ABILITY)!

      • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 10:55 am

Hartong will be in the left WHEN they can find the second middle. Forsythe is the candidate.

  • RoyBGivs[TerenceTwkWong] September 15, 2010 at 10:40 am

how and will this affect her signing with Hawaii in Nov? If she’s ranked that high and the incident(s) were ‘small potatoes’, will Coach Shoji offer her or will he look elsewhere?? Jane would be a great beach player in 2012!!

    • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 10:52 am

Why would it change things? she’s given an oral commit and from what the family told me in Aug. she was planning to be at UH next season.

  • warriorfan September 15, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I think the reason the coaches are looking at Stauber at libero is because they have a setter( or setters) in the 2012 class that are seriously thinking about Hawaii that the coaches can’t pass up. My guess is it might be Cinnamon Sary or Alexa Strange.

I also hope the coaches are looking at Alohi Robins- Hardy from Kamehameha, she has huge potential as a setter.

    • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Stauber has played L in club, not a hard decision. but they do need a second setter for the second team for practices.

  • ingoodstanding September 15, 2010 at 1:26 pm

WOW! Yet another Robins thrown into discussion(s). Not that it’s a bad thing, mind you, but it would (seemingly) be #8, or so, in their family to compete for UH VB??? Go get ‘em, go!

    The 2012 class of setters…maybe…
    2011–yet, still, incoming–transfer(s) maybe also. ;-)

  • observer September 15, 2010 at 1:45 pm

So when you all move Hartong to the outside, where does that leave Waber, looking for a new school? Barely getting started and you already have her bags packed!

    • pouncer84 September 15, 2010 at 2:40 pm

observer – Dave has said Waber is not really ready to play, but he had to use her mainly because they don’t have a lot of kids ready to play. Besides Hartong, noone else can play on the left right now. With Forsythe’s injury, they did’t have another middle. Waber is having a hard time putting balls down, most of her shots are straight cross-court. But, Dave has said that she hasn’t hung her head so that’s a very good sign, she’s hanging tough. With the WAC coming up, Waber can feel like she playing in HS again and maybe work on her shots. With a whole year behind her, next year hopefully she’ll be able to push Croson.

  • ingoodstanding September 15, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Hey, she was going to CSFullerton in the first place; Brea & La Habra area of OC are ‘nice’ to begin with. This may sound harsh, BUT Waber (just like all outside hitters)…”a dime a dozen”. Top 10 out of her recruitment class, maybe, but ‘average’…what’s the point?!

Waber should try playing the beach game, in any case. It might be interesting to see what’d become of it.

    • Cindy Luis September 15, 2010 at 3:13 pm

when i asked Waber … what were you thinking? .. she said, don’t ask. I think she is a young player who had continued to improve. it was an easy choice to stay close to home before she realized what else was out ther.

you can thank forsythe and cascioppo for helping change her mind.
IGS, yes, a dime a dozen but has a lot of potential which UH has sone can be developed.

  • observer September 15, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I’m not sure where exactly you’re “ingoodstanding”!!!!!

    • ingoodstanding September 15, 2010 at 3:03 pm

      :-)

  • dino September 15, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Sorry Cindy,i did say LOL… BAD GIRL WAHINE but what’s wrong with being BAD, the term nowdays stands for super confident person with an attitude of “you better be afraid if you’re playing vs. me”,also SICK i understand now means great?Go figure the slangs? GO BAD,SICK BOWS?

  • po'okela September 15, 2010 at 7:36 pm

croson is still committed to UH regardless of whatever trouble she got into… seriously its not a huge deal – nobodys perfect and croson has definitely learned from this!

    heres my 2011 lineup
    OH kanani croson and satele
    MB hewitt and hartong
    S uiato
    L up for grabs

if vorster can come in and make more of an impact then forsythe id love to see hartong replace satele on the outside!

  • po'okela September 15, 2010 at 7:39 pm

i think the mix up between lawless and lawmaster was simply that… a mixup!!

the OH i believe they are talking about is a 6’4 outside with loads of potential but not as huge of an impact player as a BH or a HL.

  • coco September 15, 2010 at 9:46 pm

Dave did not talk about Crowson or other recruits. Scott answered the caller’s question.

  • Warren Vounas June 1, 2011 at 1:16 am

Good job over again! Thank you=)

  • dezlyn November 10, 2011 at 11:59 am

JANE CROSON ! is the best even though she broke school policys dosnt mean she can be suspended from the volleyball team for 9 weeks .
