Delayed post-mortem

December 2nd, 2012

Apologize for not getting back to this after the match.

Busy with the BYUH match and then the drive back from Laie.

And … my mom fell, broke her hip and was in surgery. So sorry if my mind isn’t here or on the computer. It’s going to be a long rehab for her. Feeling helpless since she’s up in Washington state. Wish I could have been with the Wahine and then gone up to see her.

Anyway, hope everyone is having a better day than I am.

there’s gonna be a lot of second guessing… it’s started happening on the other threads. but the wahine fought like warriors last night, and at the end of the day, that’s all we can ask of them.

cindy — sorry to hear about ur mom. i hope she recovers fully and quickly!

  • warriorfan December 2, 2012 at 12:15 pm

Best wishes to your mom Cindy. Hope for a speedy recovery.

  • GL December 2, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Hey Cindy, sorry about your mom. Hope she gets well soon. Thanks for all your hard work

  • vballfreak808 December 2, 2012 at 12:21 pm

Sorry to hear about your mom Cindy! Hope she is okay now.

  • GL December 2, 2012 at 12:23 pm

Hey Cindy, had a quick question. Do you know which schools were recruiting Nikki Taylor ( 6’4 RS ) coming in next year.

    • warriorfan December 2, 2012 at 12:25 pm

I wonder about that too, also wonder if anyone has heard who will be on next year’s schedule?? I am hoping for Nebraska or Penn State and a some acc, Big east, Big ten and sec schools to pad the rpi,

      • dedicatedfan December 2, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Yes, Cindy, do you know what schools would be coming out for the Wahines two or three tournaments. We already know UCLA will be here, for one of the tournaments. I too, would like to see Nebraska, Penn St., Florida, Texas, Kansas, and even Minnesota, if there is 3 tournaments. If the Wahine are going to have 3 tournaments why not bring in a B1G, PAC-12, and a Big 8, or SEC team, in each tournament. For instance, Nebraska, Oregon, and Texas, in one tournament, another can have Penn St., Florida, and Stanford, the last tournament can have Minnesota, Kansas, and UCLA. Those 3 tournament should definitely boost the Wahine RPI.

        • Gogetem December 2, 2012 at 2:51 pm

Think Cindy has said many times. Just because Dave invites them doesn’t mean they want to spend the money to come here to play. Unfortunately.

    • Cindy Luis December 2, 2012 at 5:58 pm

Sorry. don’t know who else was recruiting Taylor. she committed pretty early to Hawaii so people may have backed off.

  • volleyball fan December 2, 2012 at 12:34 pm

I don’t want to see Penn State coming to Hawaii next year and have Ali Longo play against her former team. Plus I’d like to see our team have an undefeated season and then dare the NCAA not to seed our team for the post-tournament!

  • volleyball fan December 2, 2012 at 12:35 pm

Cindy, I’m so sorry you couldn’t have been sent to Washington so you could have been with your mom as well as covering the match. I guess someone was needed to cover BYU-Hawaii, but it could have rather been Ann Miller.

    • Cindy Luis December 2, 2012 at 5:59 pm

No it was Ann’s trip. She is the beat writer. It it ironic that, if it had been several years ago with 2 papers, I would have been up there too.

  • akamai December 2, 2012 at 1:27 pm

sorry about ur mom..wishing a successful recovery

  • Grammy December 2, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Ditto on the twist of fate that left you in isle when you could have been in Wash. close to your mother and Wahine. But bad luck seems to be the under current this week. Hope she has a quick recovery. And you can spend some time with her. Was your son up with Scott?
Re: Wahine loss, I’m so sorry the women are taking it so hard. But hope they move on quickly, for their sake. They are a great bunch of girls and as Coach said, “deserved better.” Nuff said about that already.

  • Gsky December 2, 2012 at 3:09 pm

So so proud to of our Wahine. My heart aches for them and their loss. Getting one swing away is going to linger with all the returnees for next year and I think will be the catalyst that pushes them possibly to the final four. They are going to be so much better next year…I just feel it in my bones. I’m not sure how good Nikki Taylor is, and if Shoji plans on putting her on the RS. But at 6’4, if she is good enough to beat out the Good Fairy/Kastl/Olevao rotation, the wahine could be really really good. I know Shoji doesn’t usually burn red shirt years though, so she would have to be absolutely dominating for that to happen. Man, I hate waiting another year to see these girls again :(

    • warriorfan December 2, 2012 at 3:12 pm

Well some of them will be playing beach so you don’t have to wait long to see them.

      • uhfan December 2, 2012 at 3:19 pm

I know Hartong’s bionic arm probably needs rest but Im hoping she plays.

        • mauna December 2, 2012 at 3:52 pm

Hartong is not on the sand roster. Take a look, 19 players listed. Interesting mix, 8 from the taraflex team, another transfer from Ariz St, 2 from HPU, includes 2 Srs, 1 Jr, 4 Fresh and 12 Sophs. Longo is listed as a Soph, so there’s a possibility she might hang around for a 5th year, playing sand as a Sr.

          • warriorfan December 2, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Hopefully that means Emily will be playing with the national team, would love to see her play at one of the tournaments this summer like Montreux Volley masters.

Interesting that Brittany Tiegs is now listed as a sophomore, hope that is not a mistake because then she could be paired up with Jane for 3 years.

          • mauna December 2, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Info to US national team tryouts, Feb 22-24, 2013, Colorado Springs. Senior A2, June 25-July 4, Dallas, Tx. Projected 48 will be invited. I would think Emily is one of the 48 invitees. Not sure if she’s ready for the Colorado Springs tryouts yet.

  • Robin December 2, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Just I note that its only the Sweet 16, and already the 2 in the Finals and 3 of the 4 in the Semis are gone- UCLA, Illinois (14-16 didn’t even make the tourney), and Florida State. Only USC remains.

    • Cindy Luis December 2, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Thank you all for the kind Thoughts. Mom made it through surgery well. spoke with the doctor. He’s a sports medicine guy so I know she’s in good hands.
thank you all for your kindness.

  • Diogenes Sinope December 2, 2012 at 6:59 pm

    Glad the surgery went well.

Take care of yourself … and Mom too!

  • dedicatedfan December 2, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Cindy, do you what teams will be hear for those 2 or 3 preseason tournaments, next year, besides UCLA?

    • Cindy Luis December 2, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Not sure the schedule is finished yet.Believe there’s another Pac-12 team besides UCLA but don’t quote me on that.

      • warriorfan December 2, 2012 at 8:10 pm

Hope its UW, time for payback. or USC

      • dedicatedfan December 3, 2012 at 8:08 am

Cindy, just for your info, got this from Ann’s column, in this morning’s SA. Texas, UCLA, San Diego, Arizona, and Northwestern, so far are coming next fall. Comparing this past preseason to next year, Stanford to Texas, a wash, UCLA to UCLA, California to Arizona, also a wash, San Diego to San Diego St., another wash, Northwestern to Baylor, a final wash. Hopefully, the other teams that Dave Shoji brings in will be an upgrade to the other teams, Albany, San Francisco, Idaho, and St. Mary’s, that the Wahine faced this preseason. Otherwise, it will be deja vu all over again, with the Selection Committee.

        • Cindy Luis December 3, 2012 at 9:14 am

DF, thanks. i do read Ann’s stories. but she rarely sends me a copy before they get printed.’-)
The thing is you never know what RPI those teams will have come start of the season. We’ll just have to see how it works. But the conference strength of those teams should help.
          Happy holidays to all.

          • dedicatedfan December 3, 2012 at 10:04 am

Just hoping Dave Shoji is able to replace Albany, San Franciso, Idaho, and St. Mary, with maybe, 2 teams from the SEC, another team from the B1G, another team from the Big 12. That would certainly help the Wahine RPI, just in case the BWC RPI, is the same as this past year.

Anyways, Happy Holidays to You, Cindy, and especially Your Mom, and Family.

“All rising to great place is by a winding stairs.” — Francis Bacon (1561-1626), English philosopher, statesman, and essayist

If the Rainbow Wahine is to go deep into the NCAA Championship next year, the almost senior-less team had to begin the winding stairs this year.

    • Orbitalripz December 3, 2012 at 1:54 am

Typo: “”All rising to great place is by a winding stair.”

  • Orbitalripz December 2, 2012 at 11:15 pm

    12-team BIG TEN = 7 berths/3 seeds …… Round 1: all 7 won –> Round 2: Ohio St lost —> Round 3: 6 (all 3 seeds) of the 7 left

    12-team PAC-12 = 7 berths/5 seeds …… Round 1: 5 won —> Round 2: Defending National Champion [Seed 7] UCLA lost —> Round 3: 4 (all seeded) of the 7 left

    9-team WCC = 6 berths/1 seed …… Round 1 : 2 won —> Round 2 ::: St. Mary’s lost ….. Round 3: 1 (only seed) of the 6 left

    9-team Big 12 = 5 berths/2 seeds …… Round 1 : 4 won —> Round 2 : [Seed 11] Kansas and Oklahoma lost ….. Round 3: 2 (1 seeded) of the 5 left

    10-team SEC = 5 berths/2 seeds …… Round 1 : 3 won … Round 2: Texas A& M lost ….. Round 3: 2 (both seeds) of the 5 left

    9-team ACC = 4 berths/1 seed ….. Round 1: 2 won ….. Round 2: [Seed 9] Florida St and North Carolina lost ….. Round 3: 0 of the 4 left

Aside: NCAA’s “Top Stories” includes “No. 4-seeded Nebraska sweeps Northern Iowa” as one of Round 2′s highlights, but nothing on the Washington-Hawai’i showdown — no doubt due to time difference of west coast matches (yeah, right).

Take care of Mom over the holidays. I’ve so enjoyed your work on our behalf. You and Ann have been so great in keeping us informed and able to follow the team’s mood and what we could expect from them. But the past and even near past are done and time to move on. Jobs well done by all. Sometimes things don’t work out the way we want them to or believe they should but that doesn’t need to hold you back. Just as in volleyball, play until the final whistle, then get back into the game and be ready for the next time. Let the emotion go about NCAA already enjoy family and friends. Get the school work out of the way. Next year will come before too long and a new season will be before us with new challenges and new parts to be incorporated into a very solid core of a very good team. Let the ‘what could have beens’ go. Focus on the ‘what will be’ and the steps to get there. You’re a great team and you will be a great team, don’t let this weigh down your minds. It’s just done. Go Wahine! And to all those who follow/love this team, even doubters, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year, too!
