I wonder if she is an indoor recruit or beach/sand recruit?

  • Robin March 31, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Spieler, the daughter Kathy and Paul Spieler, was born to play volleyball. Her mom and siblings all played volleyball for Santa Barbara High. Her aunts, Lisa and Kelly Strand, were standout players who went on to play collegiately at Hawaii and Cal Poly, respectively, and later played professionally on the beach.

Katie earned a beach triple-A rating at the age of 15.

She plans to play college indoor and beach volleyball, with an ultimate goal of playing professionally on the sand.

From Presidio Sports, Santa Barbara sports website.

    • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 3:12 pm

Thanks Robin, I knew she was Strand-Ma’a’s niece. appreciate the info.

      • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 3:20 pm

She’s not on scholarship, planning to play both.

  • leftout March 31, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Very good news, I’ve been hoping for a libero/ds recruit. Wonder why they aren’t giving her one of the hardcourt one year scholies thats avialable. Dare I think that there are possibly others coming in? Only the shadow knows…

    • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Shadow and Shoji, as early as next week.

      • Steve March 31, 2012 at 5:18 pm

Hoping those other recruits have something to do with Angelica.

        • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Steve, there are NO Swedish recruits

          • warriorfan March 31, 2012 at 8:28 pm

HAHA thanks Cindy for proving once again that Steve makes Stuff up

          • Beauston March 31, 2012 at 8:33 pm

Hate to read too much on what’s in here but looks like the “swedish” story did not stick, and this “shadow” and shoji might come to light as early as next week? So they landed on someone?

          • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Wasn’t my Swedish story. That was Steve’s.

          • Beauston March 31, 2012 at 8:37 pm

            Yes, very clear to everyone

          • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 8:38 pm

Beau, don’t read too much into it. Steve has been saying that Ljungquist is coming to coach, bringing two players with her. not completely true. Ljungquist has long wanted to come back here to coach. not working out at this time for her to be here.
Looks like Shoji will have announcement this coming week about a transfer coming in. not talking about Fonoimoana, who is in school and working on getting eligible.

          • Beauston March 31, 2012 at 8:41 pm

            Let the guessing game begin….

          • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 9:06 pm

just don’t want to have this turn into VT. there are posts out there that are just fishing. sometimes people throw things out hoping that someone will come back with the real story.

          • Beauston April 1, 2012 at 5:15 am

My point exactly, BTW they already have the 2012 NCAA brackets up in the VT site… Ahhahahahahaha

          • Spike April 1, 2012 at 5:26 am

Thank you , Cindy. I would not want this to turn into VT either. I appreciate how you verify any info before putting it out there.

VT is ridiculous and what’s worse is some of the so-called Hawaii fans who post there (and who also post here sometimes) are some of the worst offenders there.

    • Hot March 31, 2012 at 5:13 pm

We don’t know how good she is. If anyone deserves that one year scholie, it’s fifth year senior Emily Maeda, who is also the returning starter.

      • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 7:26 pm

Hot, Speiler is an invited walk-on. no scholarship given in either sport.

        • Hot March 31, 2012 at 8:33 pm

Thanks Cindy. Was referring to leftout’s comments wondering she wasn’t getting a one year scholie. Thought Maeda should get it if Shoji awards one.

  • LC March 31, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Wouldn’t surprise me it it shows up somewhere before Shoji even knows.

    • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Oh, it could show up before Shoji announces it. but he knows.

      • Beauston March 31, 2012 at 8:38 pm

        All these
        Excitement its not even August!

  • LC March 31, 2012 at 4:31 pm

Who was the coach who said that when he wanted to know who he was recruiting or who the unhappy players were he went to the internet to find out ?

I can’t remember who it was but I think it was a football coach , it was a funny story about fans on the internet.

  • LC March 31, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Here is the final update from Digg’n Na Wahine on today’s match in Jacksonville.

Wahine finished the day 8-8.Stoltzman/Hartong won all of their pool matches. Lee/Croson won three of their pool matches and have one to go tomorrow.Griffiths/Stauber won the only other UH match.Wahine have four matches in pool play remaining .

  • Beauston March 31, 2012 at 8:45 pm

    Re: FF
Thanks for confirming that, couple of peeps mentioned sightings of her at UH but not reliable source so never did mention.
its also good to know a talent like hers still not completely out of UH’s roster this fall. Cant wait to see who this transfer is going to be.

  • haleiwacrossfitter March 31, 2012 at 9:08 pm

This has been one of the most agonizing off seasons ever with all the unknowns.

    Is FF playing in fall?
    Is Brit coming back?
Who is the back row help Shoji was talking about?
Is Amaro or Ross coming to UH?
Is there really a Florida middle coming to UH?
Where is Hartong going to play, OH or MB?
Will Adolpho going to be allowed to play VB with the new BB coach…

etc, etc, etc….just hate not knowing so much of the unknown. Slowly things are unraveling, but still agonizing to wait it out.

    • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 9:17 pm

      1. Again, no one knows if Fonoimoana is playing. she has to gain sophomore status to be eligible and that won’t be known until after spring, or even summer.
      2. Hewitt is gone.
      3. back row help … never heard Shoji say that .
      4. Ross is at Pepperdine. Amaro … no longer at Arizona, didn’t play in the spring game BUT Florida transfer is now setting for the Wildcats.
      5. Hartong is on the left
      6. don’t know if Adolpho is playing both. assuming she is.

      • haleiwacrossfitter March 31, 2012 at 9:24 pm

        Hey Cindy,

Thanks, I know the answers to my questions I was just giving a rundown of the unknowns this off season that came up at one point or another the last 3 months. It has been a crazy 3 months….more if you consider the FF situation that started in the fall.

As for the backrow help, I thought I heard Shoji say at the end of last season he was getting help in the backrow. Which started a whole nother realm of “who is it?” speculation back in January. I know people were thinking Dykstra from Nebraska..which I always thought was a joke. But that speculation ended quickly.

        • haleiwacrossfitter March 31, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Wait..I didn’t hear anything about the Florida transfer with Arizona…what is that about and who?

          • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Chanel Brown, who is from Phoenix, transferred from UF, closer to home. She’s setting at UA. it’s up at arizonawildcats.com

  • haleiwacrossfitter March 31, 2012 at 9:28 pm

Cindy…do you know who this transfer coming in is? I know you can’t say who it is, but do you know?

If you do, on your opinion, do you think she will make an immediate impact?

    • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 9:37 pm

I do not know. I would tell you if I did. Still digging around for it. All I know is that it just happened, like earlier this week, and should make a difference.

      • haleiwacrossfitter March 31, 2012 at 9:52 pm

I know there are still some out there not committed. The most recent is from Arizona State. Senior OH for 2012. ASU’s go to hitter this past season. It was within the last couple days it was announced she was transferring. So if Shoji got a transfer just this week, the timing is there. Not saying this is her, but just putting time pieces together. She would only have 1 year though if it was her. Which would also make sense since we have some 2013 recruits we have to make room for on scholarship. The only other one out there, that is announced anyway, that I would think could make an impact would be Amaro. (just thinking out load right now)

Unless this transfer hasn’t announced she is leaving her school yet…which makes this whole post jibberish..haha.

        • Cindy Luis March 31, 2012 at 9:58 pm

not jibberish. There is a transfer, that’s really all i know. supposed to be announced next week. As I said, still digging for the name.
As for Amaro, her name was mentioned here for a while. just know that she is no longer at UA.

          • haleiwacrossfitter March 31, 2012 at 10:05 pm

I’m taking a guess at either Ashley Kastl from ASU, will be a senior OH this fall, or Amaro. I got a feeling it will be one of these two. I’m never right at these things though….

        • warriorfan March 31, 2012 at 11:24 pm

I doubt it’s Kastl and I hope it’s not. She hit .150 on the year last season. I know she played in the Pac 10, but that’s not good at all.

  • Setaone March 31, 2012 at 10:03 pm

Is Ah Mow going to be coaching next year?

    • Cindy Luis April 1, 2012 at 3:19 pm

      yes, Ah Mow-Santos is returning.

  • leftout March 31, 2012 at 10:09 pm

The NLI signing dates are Nov 9-16 and Apr 11-Aug1. Athlete who will not be receiving an athletics financial aid(a scholie) doesn’t sign an NLI.
My question is whether a coach is allowed to mention the names of a walkon/invited walkon outside of the NLI dates.

    • Cindy Luis April 1, 2012 at 3:18 pm

LO, Shoji didn’t mention any names. Spieler’s item was posted on her club website. After seeing that info, I then asked Shoji if she was a scholarship player, he said no.
And walk-ons are just that, walk-ons.
Transfers aren’t bound by NLI rules since they signed one with their first school.

  • pouncer84 March 31, 2012 at 10:37 pm

Is this Spieler any good? Do we really need another shorty? Or can Dave just get rid of all the dead weight he has on the team now. I guess dead weight is too harsh, how about not cutting it. He needs quality players with height, which he doesn’t have enough of. I see way too many projects on this team.

I wish Charlie would do the same. Sorry Cindy for venting.

    • Hot March 31, 2012 at 10:58 pm

Like Cindy has said in the past, it’s not that Dave isn’t going for the height, it’s just that those tall players don’t want to play for UH. That shouldn’t be hard to understand. And your griping about height doesn’t hold much weight with people like Danielson, Otineru and Satele. Too many projects because those were the ones willing to commit to UH. Who exactly are the dead weight that you are referring to?

As far as the “shorties,” they’re there to play exclusively back row, not front row. Maeda did well last year. Lelepali and Kam both good servers. I didn’t like Blake at libero, but who knows how much she has improved. We have no idea what Kawamura and this new girl can do.

    • Cindy Luis April 1, 2012 at 3:16 pm

You can vent all you want, don’t have problems with it. unless it gets personal
Spieler is a good player, for both sand and indoor. Not like she’s taking a scholarship. And Wong is seeing that this is asking a lot of the indoor players to play both. adding a few scholarships will help for the beach-specific and they won’t have to augment from indoor, although I see Croson wanting to play both.
Don’t know who the projects are you refer to. Vorster is raw but she has greatly improved during her redshirt year. Height does not equal excellence IMHO.

  • warriorfan March 31, 2012 at 11:25 pm

My guess is it Might be a libero, Ali longo from PSU.

    • Beauston April 1, 2012 at 5:19 am

Another libero? Thought the coaches looking into possible OH?

  • vballfreak808 April 1, 2012 at 12:31 am

If a good outside does come in and Fonoimoana also comes, who will sit out? It makes me wonder

    • warriorfan April 1, 2012 at 5:42 am

Why would anyone sit out?? Uh has two scholies available.

  • HOSSANA April 1, 2012 at 4:25 am

I’m usually critical of the Wahine volleyball program because of the lack of height with his front row but I can understand the predicament Shoji has w/players not wanting to come here esp. if they are tall and physical so I have to give Shoji credit for developing those players with what he has in the front row….I know its not easy and every yr. there is tremendous pressure on the Wahine program and with Shoji but every year he comes through considering the talent he has so I can appreciate what he has done and I know, esp. after the Nebraska match, he definitely knows his team weaknesses and will endeavor to try and shore it up……also, my apologies to Cindy for sometimes being too critical when I know you are out there persevering in ascertaining what info you can get for all of us out here who sometimes lack appreciation but we do appreciate all your tidbits of info……anyway, looking forward to Wahine VB in August concomitant with Chow’s football team which makes it exciting just thinking about it…..cheers to you all!!!

  • Beauston April 1, 2012 at 5:13 am

Guys, i just spoke to Amaro and was very clear in saying she is not going to UH, as much as she loves the school and the fans specially, she will not be trasferring. That’s pretty much the extent of that. Tried to find out where she’s going… Have yet to hear back. So unless shes just pulling my leg, Hali Amaro is not going to UH.

    • Cindy Luis April 1, 2012 at 3:12 pm

      Never said it was Amaro.

      • Beauston April 1, 2012 at 7:10 pm

It wasnt you Cindy someone else mentioned Amaro here, and warriorfan I was not stalking, she and I have common acquaintances and topic had come up so… Did’nt appreciate your stalking remarks at all.

    • warriorfan April 1, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Dude, leave these girls alone, stop being a creeper, if you aren’t a reporter just stop, it’s so tacky.

  • kazu April 1, 2012 at 5:41 am

There has been so much talk about FF, i think its time to forget about her. If she plays okay,if not that’s okay too.

  • Of course April 1, 2012 at 12:34 pm

And sure enough some dork has already ran to VT to start another idiotic Hawaii thread filled with pure speculation and directing all the VT crazies over to this blog.

    Where’s the “rolling eyes” smiley?

    • Cindy Luis April 1, 2012 at 3:09 pm

NOOOOO. Why would they post on VT?

      • Beauston April 1, 2012 at 7:15 pm

  • vballfreak808 April 1, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Here is a video of Spieler.

She has a nice save at 4:19. She has potential and can pass very well
