ESPN article: 5 burning questions for NCAA tourney

on another thread:

Well-written but, as someone said on an earlier thread, probably a blip on the radar.

Haley said to me Sunday that it would take the media to put pressure on the NCAA for change because the coaches have been trying and been ignored. Rich Kern and Pablo also have been working with the NCAA for a better formula but Rich said the suggestions haven’t been seriously looked at.

Suggested it to VBMag and sounds like a future article.

  • Cindy Luis November 30, 2011 at 8:22 am

  • po'okela November 30, 2011 at 8:26 am

no chance they’d bonk out and not show it, right? lol

    • Cindy Luis November 30, 2011 at 8:30 am

      no chance

  • Beauston November 30, 2011 at 8:37 am

While we are on a media subject if the treatment of our media at CSU was bad then return the favor.Don’t ask their coaches for quotes and give them as little coverage as possible.

    • Cindy Luis November 30, 2011 at 8:58 am

the media treatment at CSU had nothing to do with the coaches. whoever was running the tourney simply didn’t do their jobs. press conferences poorly run, stats not available, their wireless kept going out. When that happens at UH, they’ll print stats out at the timeouts. CSU didn’t. hard to find box scores in the press room
Not that it should be a given, but there was no refreshments provided for the working media. We don’t need a catered dinner, like the WAC and Final Four does, but it would be nice not to have to walk up three levels of stands to buy a water at the concession stands.
And CSU refused to deal with ESPN camera people who nearly tripped players during warmups with their cords and camped out in front of the press table so no one could see the match.

good piece by Voepel she has been critical of the committee in past.

From the comments section this had me cracking up.

Mechelle can you guys at ESPN please send that obnoxious Kellie Tennant to another regional.

As fans of the only NCAA/college revenue producing program/team I am happy that there are other teams left who can still pay to play in the tournament in December. We appreciate the intricacy and athleticism of this game but we are in a minority when compared to other sports like football, basketball & baseball on the men’s side and mud wrestling & roller derby (being silly & stupid) on the women’s side. So best to support what meager chances we do see and continue make wahine volleyball the best experience it can be for those who choose to become part of it.

Go girls! You make us proud to be Wahine fans.

  • LC November 30, 2011 at 9:13 am

I’m ready to move on from all this talk about seeding and committees. Nothing we can do about it anyway so time to focus on the matches one at a time.

    • Cindy Luis November 30, 2011 at 9:16 am

      Yep, time to move on
Press conferences today. Probably will only make UNC and UH’s. those are this afternoon in between practices.

      • Brad November 30, 2011 at 9:19 am

any idea which of the 3 teams will bring the most fans?

  • Cindy Luis November 30, 2011 at 9:57 am

good question. depends on how costly the airfare is. Delta still comes here direct I think form Denver. Hawaiian and others out of Portland.

“THIS IS OUR HOUSE” by Bon Jovi
(My version of the full track — the lyrics of which seem to change with each performance lol)

This is our time (Go Danielson!)
This is our night (Go Uiato!)
    Are you alive?
Get up, get up, get up, get up, time to fly!
Are we gonna raise the roof? (Go Hewitt!)
Are we gonna touch the sky? (Go Croson!)
Everybody with me let me hear you now
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

    This is our house
These are my people, WAHINE, this is my town
    This is our house
Ain’t nobody know we’re gonna knock it down (O whoa BOW o o o oS)
This is our house (O whoa BOW o o o oS)

    We have arrived (Go Hartong!)
We won’t be denied (Go Satale!)
Get up, get up, get up, get up, time to shine
Are we gonna turn it up? (Go Maeda, Blake!)
Are we gonna shake it up? (Go Adolpho, Griffiths!)
Let me see you raise ‘em up and shout out loud
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

    This is our house
These are my people, WAHINE, this is my town
    This is our house
Ain’t nobody know we’re gonna knock it down
    This is our house
These are my colors, GREEN AND WHITE, this is sacred ground

    This is our house
Ain’t nobody know we’re gonna knock it down
This is our house(O whoa BOW o o o oS)
This is our house(O whoa BOW o o o oS)
    This is our house
Ain’t nobody know we’re gonna knock it down

Cindy, is there a designated home team in each match? UO and CSU both green and yellow uni’s?

    • Cindy Luis November 30, 2011 at 10:20 am

yes, there is a designated home team. i’m sure they brought both sets (road and home)

  • setaone November 30, 2011 at 10:12 am

I know….we are trying to move past. But here is another Q&A

    http://www.ncaa.com/news/volleyball-women/article/2011-11-29/qa-diane-turnham

    • Cindy Luis November 30, 2011 at 10:20 am

      thanks

      Re: setaone’s ncaa.com link

      From the link (worth reading):

Q: Why are no Pac-12 Teams seeded in the top five, despite their higher AVCA Coaches Poll rankings throughout the year?

A: The committee looks at the whole body of work when evaluating the teams selected to the tournament. The ranking of a team in the coaches’ poll is not a factor in the committees selection criteria.

So all these years we were told that polls — such as the AVCA Coaches Poll, which is one of the 2 polls listed on the ncaa.com’s site when you click on RANKINGS if you wish to see the last NCAA RPI power rankings — is just one criteria under consideration by the NCAA Selection Committee.

Now we are told by an official of the NCAA that they’ve been lying to us all these years. Can’t wait to hear that latest spin from the NCAA Selection Committte.

Re: “Haley said to me Sunday that it would take the media to put pressure on the NCAA for change because the coaches have been trying and been ignored.”

TRANSPARENCY and the NCAA are like oil and water. The two has never mixed well together.

I agree with Coach Haley. It’s up to the media and a lot of lawsuits. If it were not for HSA and its lawsuit (now dropped after Neil , Governor Abercrombie would be applying his the-less-the-public-knows-the-better-off philosophy whenever he can get away with it.

    • OrbitalripZ (call me OZ) November 30, 2011 at 10:23 am

That last sentence should read: If it were not for HSA and its lawsuit (now dropped after Neil was forced to eat crow or mynah bird), Governor . . .
