Had a nice chat with Charlie Wade
By Cindy Luis
Had a 30-minute sitdown (Wednesday, July 15) with the new UH men’s volleyball coach for a story that is supposed to run in Sunday’s Star-Bulletin. (It may have to be a day or so) He’s still as passionate about the sport as I remember him being the first time we met. Several years before he became a Wahine assistant. To answer some of the previous questions:Yes, Jonas is on board to enroll in fall. Yes, there is a graduate assistant position open and he has several applicants, most notably Beckwith and Schkud. And, yes, he is very committed to keeping the local kids here. Saw a couple of potentials at this week’s camp at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Thanks for the scoops Cindy. Can’t wait to read the article on sunday.
I am excited about Jonas and the possibility of Beckwith or Schkud being on the staff.
Ive heard that Charlie has some really good recruits interested in becoming warriors for the 2010 class, was he at the junior olympics in atlanta a few weeks ago?

Well, story may have to pushed back a week. think we lost a page for the Sunday paper.
As for recruits, Charlie was at JOs and said he was very proud to be able to introduce himself as the Hawaii coach. Said that every top player he was interested in said they are also interested in UH. Sounds like he’s got an aggressive recruiting strategy.

Hi Cindy, I just finished reading the Sunday article with Charlie Wade. I didn’t read the responses to the previous article but I do know this. I attended the JOs in Atlanta because my son had been playing since he was 11. He’s won a gold and a bronze medal. He just finished his Junior year of high school here on Oahu. He has made the FAB 15 team the last 2 years in a row. He’s also made the State Tournament All-star team 2 years in a row, 1st team and 2nd team. He’s lead his school to 2 league championships and 3 consecutive top 4 finishes in the State Tournament. Among the local coaches and boys volleyball community, he is admitted as one of the top 5 players in Hawaii to graduate in 2010. But with all that said, when I introduced myself and my wife to him in Atlanta to Coach Wade. I tried to tell him who we were and who our son was and he was “CLUELESS!” We never had the opportunity to talk to him. My son “does” have an interest in staying home and playing here but apparently when Coach Wade says he’s committed to keeping the best local players here, he is really only talking about 1 or 2 players. And they have to come from an ILH private school. I’m a very loyal UH Men’s volleyball fan and I’ve had regular season tickets all the way back before the Yuval Katz days. But now I’m very close to the program because my son may want to play here. How do I tell my son that no matter how good he gets, Coach Wade doesn’t even know he exists?

I can’t speak to what happened when you tried to introduce yourself. My guess is UH is aware of your son. Hard not to be with his credentials. has your son filled out the prospect interest form? it is available at hawaiiathletics.com link to the far right Prospects.
Hope it works out for your son. Be fun to have the arena rocking like it did during Yuval’s time.

I’d cut Coach Wade a little slack , he did just move back a little over a month ago. I am sure by the next high school season he will know every local HS product. I would love to have Joby Ramos on the team by the way. Hope he decides to walk on.

Thanks WF. As Charlie said, it’s a shame that not a single player on scholarship (all 4.2 of them) is from Hawaii.
