Emily made the final top 20 player cut. All of the players in the last set of pictures made the cut. Players you made be familiar with are Fuller, Olgard and Hagglund from USC.

Did anyone else see that article on the Los Alamitos setter from that link with the photos of Hartong. If she really does end up at UH, I wonder how the playing time will go with Hawaii having 4 setters in one season. (2013)

Justine Wong-Orantes, 5-6 junior setter Los Alomitos h.s., at 12 years old one of the youngest to ever earn a AA beach vb ranking. Article below taken from Southern California Report, 9 Feb 2012.
“I’ve been talking with Hawaii, I’ve been in contact with them and making some phone calls. As of right now its my NO.1 choice. I might be able to go there for both indoor and beach. Some other schools include Pepperdine, Ucla for beach, LMU and Arizona. My h.s. team went to Hawaii two summers ago and I had never been there before. I instantly fell in love. I love the atmosphere. Its a big factor. I also watched Jane(Croson) and Emily(Hartong) play when I was them(there?). I grew up with them. Also, when you play in their gym, you are like a celebrity there. I think I would be a good fit there”.
UH will have three or four indoor scholarships available that year.
geezus, offer her a scholarship now before she chgs. her mind…..she’s going to be a jewel in a rough….or diamond in the rough……one of the youngest to earn a AA beach vb ranking…she will only get better….and better……
Not sure uh has another scholie in 2013. She must be a preferred walk on maybe go on scholie in 2014? Would love to get her and crissy jones .
Or maybe a beach schollie her freshman year and then an indoor there after. But it says this girl is 5′6. Is she that good where Dave would offer a 5′6 setter a scholarship indoors?
I thought I read in an LA article where Shoji offered Justine W-O a scholarship for 2013? Anyone seen that? Maybe he has visions of her as a Libero, cause she has outstanding defensive skills.
Yes Crissy Jones would be a great get for 2014. She played a major part of Los Al’s success last season as a soph 6-2 mb. In one of the playoff games she went 24 kills in 26 attempts. Gotta keep the Los Al connection alive.
ESPNHS – “The good news for Long Beach is that its core six return this season to try to win the 17s national title. Wong-Orantes, a 5-foot-6 junior setter who is considering a scholarship offer from Hawaii, ”
http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/volleyball/tag/_/name/justine-wong-orantes
Miscalculated, Wong-Orantes will be able to sign an NLI on Nov 2012, scholies tight if FF is eligible. Could sign for beach, may have four scholies available. Dave probably looking at her as a ds/libero.
Don’t know if Ucla is recruiting her, her club team is owned by a Ucla assistant.
yes verbals our non biding. first NLI signing would be nov. of senior year. 2012 for the class of 2013
Several articles refer to her as an All American but who’s AA ? Was it Volleyballmag,ESPNHS,Max Preps? I just don’t recall her being named an All American, anyone know ?
QZ, AA is a rating she attained. used for beach tournament to rank players or seed them.
Thanks LC, I knew in my old age I read it somewhere.
As far as scholarships and offers, Shoji has it all planned out of what he needs and who he wants.
Signing a beach vb scholie in Nov could be a very good option for Justine. It will allow her a year to mature physically, partner with Corson and still have our years of indoor eligibility remaining. On the other hand, think we need a really good libero for 2012.
wasnt there a rule in place for those who utilize a sand scholarship are not allowed to play indoor for 2 seasons?
Po’okela, never heard anything about a two-year restriction on sand for indoor. only that those on sand scholarships not allowed to play indoor at all.
That ruling was discussed on the proboards and yes if you are on a sand scholarship you have to sit for 2 seasons for indoor. I believe the intention of that ruling was to stop coaches from sandbagging a player on sand to indoor the following year.
roofer, i can see the intent. sort of what we were suggesting if Fonoimoana were eligible this spring. i don’t understand how it could pass, tho. so few teams are offering the sport and it would be a different school year. things change
It would be an advantage to schools with the sand program, whereas making up a situation where if you had an incoming freshmen, instead of redshirting her, give her a sand scholarship for that year and you could give that scholarship to someone who would play immediately for indoors. Then the following year give that freshmen an indoor scholarship. That could apply to Justine if she would agree to it instead of redshirting her freshmen year.
should we rename the team to ‘los alamitos wahine’ ??
alex (graduated), jane, emily, justine & crissy (wishful thinking but i’m crossing my fingers) although i’m pretty sure she’ll probably end up in a california pac-12 school. doubt justine will be on scholarship her freshman year. she’s an amazing player with so much tenacity but i see her walking on as a libero/ds/setter (similar to strauber).
An ESPN article mentioned that she is consdering a scholarship offer from Hawaii. It didn’t say whether it was indoor or beach. If its beach vb, than she cannot play indoor the same school year. It’s unlikely that she will walk on indoor, she’ll have many other options. There aren’t many who would consider paying non resident tuition the first year.
stauber did and we don’t know if she’ll be on scholarship next year
Don’t know what other options were available to Stuaber prior to her decesion to walk on. I’m thinking that Justin has alot more options to chose from especially with beach vb. Tuition at UH may not be prohibitive, when you add the higher cost of living here it could be a factor. If the ESPN release is true, why would she walk on when Shoji is offering a scholie.
i just don’t see shoji utilizing another scholarship for ANOTHER setter in 2013. if she spent the next 2 years focusing on transitioning into the libero position than maybe but justine’s primary role on the los al & mizuno team has and always has been setter. maybe this year they’ll switch her up??
Yes, Leftout, IF she is on Sand scholarship she cannot play indoor. However if she is on indoor scholarship, she can walk on to sand.
OR you could walk-on for both.
it’s not like UH nonresident is that expensive, comparatively I know plenty of students here who said it is cheaper to go to UH, including the airfare to go home for breaks, than to pay in-state at UC.
roofer, you’re right. i see that advantage and why the 2-year restriction would be in place when thinking of redshirting indoor and play sand.but redshirting indoor player on scholarship and have to walk-on to sand.
Read an article where an athlete on a sand VB scholarship is also eligible to play indoor the same academic year. Don’t why a coach would do it this way, doesn’t sound logical.
“the NCAA has ruled that a player receiving financial aid from the sand team can play both sports as long as her inclusion holds th court team to the 12 scholarship limit. If there is no scholarship on the court team, she must wait two years before being allowed to play both sports.
don’t know where you read it but it has been stated from the very beginning that a sand scholarship player cannot play indoor at all. and that if an indoor player on scholarship wants to play sand, she has to do it as a walk-on.
that two-year wait period is contingent on the scholarship limit. which I don’t see UH doing.
Just because something is “stated from the very beginning” doesn’t necessarily make it factual. If it did we would still think that the earth is flat, and that its at the center of our universe. I’m plainly stating that I recently read an article and thought of sharing it with others.
The article I read is from Volleyball Magazine 05/27/11, “NCAA Rules of the Sand”.
I’m not the one who ’stated it from the beginning.’
it was what the NCAA put out, which was no sand player on scholarship can play indoor. However, as several have state, things have been revised a bit
Here are the FAQs as put out in March, probably about the time that VBMag article was written. if link doesn’t work for you, go to avca.org and follow the sand links
http://www.avca.org/includes/media/docs/Sand-VB-FAQ-3-11-.pdf
Can court volleyball players play on the sand volleyball team?
A. Yes, they would become a two‐sport student‐athlete and must abide by the rules governing all two‐ sport athletes in terms of training hours, i.e. no more than 20 hours per week. Court VB players on scholarship participating on the Sand VB team become counters, but their aid does not count against

the Sand scholarship limits. The aid of Sand VB players, however, does count again the Court VB scholarship limits. (See NCAA Financial Aid Legislation for more detail )
Back to the men. It would be a nice gesture to somehow honor Al Scates prior to the Sat. match. He has been wonderful for the sport and really fun to yell at over the years!
doing a story on scares for tomorrow’s paper. They are honoring him Saturday with a video and gift prior to the first serve.
So it is true, a player on a sand vb scholarship is able to play court(indoor) but she is counted towards the twelve indoor sholarships even though she does not recieve one.
All previous posts that I read stated that a player on a sand scholie could not play in door that academic year. Can’t foresee a situation where a coach would utilize that option.
i’m still a little confused. about the ‘counting’ and the two-year wait. I’m sure things will continue to be tweaked as it moves to a real ncaa championship sport.
Justine earned her AAA beach rating at age 12! Her club team won the 16’s open nationals and she was named all-american!
