Prediction: Hartong an AA in 2012.

    • Cindy Luis

Don’t see why she wouldn’t be.

    • Lanaiboy

A better prediction will be that Hartong will attain 1st string All-American status this upcoming year. She already was named as 2nd team All-American last season. Don’t doubt this will happen. She did well in the A2 tourney as an outside hitter.

    way to represent EM!!!

  • Amazing how Emily keeps on improving her skills.

  • Kazu

Its amazing how Shoji comes up with these players, and they turn out to be outstanding athletes. I hope that Hartong can be one of the leaders of this team this year.

  • Of the 48 athletes selected for the A2 team, 13 were freshmen in 2011. Pretty impressive.

  • Warrior15

    Great showing by Hartong!

  • Warrior15

There was mention (on VT) that Kanani was going to Japan to play in their pro leagues.

Does anyone have any more info? If it’s true, glad to see her pursuing a pro career.

Now that we are fastly approaching the womens vball season, I feel relieved that our main go to OH hitters Croson and Hartong really didnt waste their Summer and went to work. Hartong with A2 team and Croson attending numerous beach tourneys. I was hoping the same for Uiato, but didnt hear much about her during summer. At the least, I’m hoping she hit the gym as she’s a shoe in to return as the main setter and on her 2nd year as a main setter, expectations will only go higher. She’s proven she can do the job last year, This year, she needs to prove she can lead this team offensively without Shoji yelling on the sidelines.

  • Vinny

Uiato is back here, didn’t sound like she did much of anything while back in cali.

    • Beauston

She’s still got a few weeks to hit the gym, with 3 incoming transfers and possible starters, I can only imagine the pressure she’ll have in connecting well with everybody. Last year, on her first year setting, a lot of the balls went to Danielson and the connection was superb, and while Croson was in the action as well, the rest of the line- up will change. With Hartong now as an OH, and middle and RS TBD, she doesnt have much time to adjust. With Longo on board, we should be looking at more stable passing leaving Uiato with no excuse to execute the offense.

      • Steve

Yep, hope Uiato spent the summer, back home, working out and going over the playbook. Without a real “go to” player, like Danielson, she really needs to spread the ball around, keep the defense guessing. Longo should help here with her passing ability. Also, hoping Uiato gets her timing down with the new middles and outside hitters. This is very important.

    • Cindy Luis

We don’t know what she did or didn’t do. Just because she wasn’t on playing beach doesn’t mean she wasn’t working out.

  • Vinny

Hartong and Croson are a couple of volleyball freaks. I think they play the game while they sleep.

    • Steve

      Vinny,

I like that description of your’s, concerning both Hartong and Croson.

    • We’ll need both Hartong and Croson with Uiato and Maeda to be vocal leaders for the start of the season. Of the newcomers, I don’t seeing them being very vocal because they are newbies, and maybe as the season goes along and being accepted by the fans one of them might step up.

  • Vinny

I agree with Dave, you don’t have to be very vocal to be a leader.Leading by example works just as well.

  • Vinny

Hartong is a classic example of leading by example yet she isn’t very vocal. Dave recent said that he is counting on her this year to take the role of leadership.

Ah Mow just plain scares me at times. It’s that stink eye look that she gives you.

    • Steve

      Vinny,

That is Ah Mow’s been there, done that look of her’s. That is the look Uiato has to get. You know, I put up that good set, so you better put that ball down, look.

  • Vinny

Croson has teamed up with LBSU’s Tara Roenicke again this weekend.

  • Ron

Mita is a self described “gym rat”. I am sure she is playing every day. A large part of our success will depend on how much progress she has made. I think with Robyn coaching and Dave yelling she will do great.

    • Imua562

I know Mita’s sister and brother in law are club coaches in California so she spends her summer in the gym with them playing and working out. She even went out to AAUs with them so she spends most of her summers in the gym around volleyball.

  • Hot

If there’s one player that’s going to feel a lot of pressure, it’s gonna be be Emily Maeda at the libero position. She will have to fend off Ali Longo and an army of returning and new defensive specialists that are gunning for her position. Longo could possibly end up at libero, but there is still Blake, and we know how much faith Dave has in her.

  • Beauston

Apparently Justine Wong-Orantes has not committed to any school yet, with Jane as her BFF, I’m hoping she goes to UH as Jane teases on FB.

    • Cindy Luis

that roster could get a little crowded

      • vballfreak808

Agreed. Hawaii keeps everyone for the 2013 season except Maeda which is still around 20 players. It would be awesome if she becomes at a Wahine as long as she knows that she will have to fight for playing time. I would hate for her to go to school where she wouldn’t get to show her talents.

  • Vinny

Justine Wong-Orantes was just named to the 17 Open All American team at the Girls Junior Nationals but unfortunately Hawai`i doesn’t really need another setter or another DS.

I guess there is a possibility that she could walk on and try out for the team if her parents can afford to send her here.
