StarAdvertiser needs to get better IT people, very typical of the kind of people StarAdvertiser hires.

  • Cindy Luis

now that was a horrible way to lose that match. looked like Longo would have an ace. Cal’s Gombar played it, just going over the net and landing in front of Kastl Just in. 15-12.

  • jmy

Hawaii did not deserve to win this…they half-stepped all night…very poor effort…

  • Steve

UCLA, now becomes a must WIN game. The Wahine cannot afford to come away from these 3 tournaments with 2 losses, if they want to host the 1st and 2nd round. The NCAA is always looking for reasons not to have Hawaii host.

  • warriorfan

They should be mad after the way they played tonight Cal is not a good team sorry.

  • Jon

That was the WORST i’ve seen a hawaii team play in a long time over those last two sets. Concrete feet and ZERO effort. YUCK.

  • Steve

I can see Hawaii dropping out of the Top 10, after this. Not that they should, but the NCAA is always looking for a way to kick Hawaii down.

    • warriorfan

They should after this loss, Cal will be lucky to finish above 6th in the Pac 10. Hartong, Vorster, and Croson and Mita were all terrible tonight, and Kastl froze on that last play.

  • Cindy Luis

gotta write. be back in a bit

  • Steve

Dave needs to rethink that move of switching Jade and Adolpho. Why fool with something that has been working.

Even tho Kastl played well, why make the change. If you are winning, why make the change.

  • Steve

I would not be surprised if Shoji calls for a practice, tomorrow. If he does not, the Wahine should hold their own practice, the way they played tonite.

The RS will be a problem spot again this year. He should maybe rethink the idea of redshirting Alevao. Put her back in the mix.

    • Cindy Luis

they aren’t practicing tomorrow. they have a mandated one day off every week and Monday is it.

    • Mike

Right was not a problem last year. The only game Satele had a problem with was UCLA which others also had problems. She played excellent after that and they would not have won many of games if it weren’t for her clutch kills like against Pepperdine and Colorado St. She also had a very good match against USC. There’s a reason the coaches voted her All-WAC. The problem was Shoji with him being stubborn to play Kalei and especially Lizzy. nothing personal against the two girls however it was obvious in the tourney they weren’t ready.

  • Matt

Why did Kastl even start tonight? She did great in my opinion except on that last point. Is there a specific reason why Goodman didn’t play as much?

    • Steve

This loss was a TOTAL Team LOSS, including Dave Shoji. Kastl has not learned yet, to play every point to the end. Goodman knows that, Kastl does not. For that reason Goodman should be starting, no ands if or buts, about it.

      • Matt

I completely agree, Goodman deserved to start.

      • warriorfan

I think it’ s time Kastl stays in the starting line up.(That game point hiccup shouldn’t cost her the starting spot. and also Longo could have taken that ball as well )

Kastl provides more offense and it will pay off in the long run for to starting and getting used to hitting on the right so by the time post season comes UH will have three threats at the pins.

  • Steve

Now we will all see what this team is made of. The telling tail will come with the Verizon Volleyball Challenge. The Wahine NEED to WIN every MATCH, in that Tournament. If they do not, well, they will be on the road, playing in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Kazu

The better team won tonight. Next week should be a good one with UCLA, Idaho, and San Diego State. I think the Wahine’s will have tough competition from UCLA, and San Diego State. They can’t play like they did tonight or its going to be a long weekend for them.

  • volleyball fan

Most upsetting is how Hawaii lost the last point. The Wahines sure got their butts kicked. This will motivate them to practice much harder and work on their weaknesses. The true test is how they will match up against a big physical team like UCLA.

As for the playoffs, I wouldn’t worry about it too much this year. Next year they will be a whole lot better.

    • Steve

That is true, next year they had better be better, with everyone, except Maeda returning. They will have a 6’3 OH coming in, hopefully to play the RS. Not unless Dave decides to go much smaller on the RS.

  • cruisecontrol

Anyone see the all tournament team?
I thought I saw Vorster, Uiato, Hartong, and Johnson, but not sure who else.

  • warriorfan

Okay after calming down. This isn’t such a terrible loss. This will fire them up for UCLA IMO. It’s better that they lose now than later. This is not a team that would have gone undefeated all season and Cal is an NCAA team so I prefer they lose to them than a big west team. I want UH to go undefeated in the Big West and show dominance.

The key is they need to come back next weekend and go 3-0! and Jane and Jade have got to pick up their game, they were both terrible tonight.

    • jmy

I see what you’re saying, but let me remind you: #25 beat #6 on #6′s home court…that stinks!

    • Steve

The only two players that played decent tonite were Adolpho and Maeda, everyone else played terrible. Hopefully, Jane is over her illness by this coming weekend. She had no real zip on her ball, even her serve, all night long.

      • warriorfan

Kastl was not terrible, and she was robbed of one of her kills so she would have been hitting around .300. Hartong was also decent but her serving was off.

      • kitsunegari

now now now Steve, college players with illnesses hasnt stopped you from being derrogatory towards them now has it? cut the act and be your usual dumb self

  • Steve

Waiting for Cindy’s match rewind. Hoping she does not say, at the end, got to go, or even, be back when I get home. Cause she never comes back on when she gets home.

  • Kauaiboy

We really missed jades inspired play tonight, we looked totally flat out there. Bad loss for Hawaii, this brings things back down to reality! we are not a top 5 team.

  • Steve

Watching, Penn St., UCLA, and Nebraska play, the Wahine have a long way to go, to be even competitive with those 3 teams. If the Wahine do not UP their GAME Tremendously, it will be 3 and ADIOS, when they play UCLA, this coming weekend.

    • warriorfan

Thats ridiculous, I saw Penn State and Stanford and UH can hang with them when they play their A game. Tonight was their C game.

  • Steve

Hope people asked Dave and the players some very difficult questions, and not let them slide, in the press room.

    • warriorfan

What is there to say?? They didn’t play as well as they could, that’s all.
I don’t think we will see Jade and Jane make that many error I am confident they will both pick up their games next weekend.

  • Bud

Wahine was a little off tonight and Cal played probably their best match of the season. I like Kastl in the lineup, does all the little things reasonably well and provides a little more punch on offense.

    • warriorfan

Exactly Bud, I think Kastl playing on the right and learning to hit from there will pay off in the long run. Goodman should come in for the 6′ 2 and as a blocking sub.

    • Steve

For Kastl, who played in every match last year for ASU, to get brain freeze at a very important time, is not good. I would not trust her, having brain freeze again.

      • kitsunegari

when you keep asking which players parents are in attendance, no one should trust you.

      • warriorfan

I think it was a case of celebrating too soon, and like I said I would prefer the libero go in and pick up that ball and take control, make the right side an option to set.

  • Jon

Agree in regards to kastl – she can be a real terminator, which is what the wahine will need in crunch time.

  • Queen Zelda of Wahiawa

The clowns at OC 16 got their wish, they wanted Cal to win.

I got so fed so with hearing about the wounded bear I watched 90 % of the match muted.

  • Steve

Listening to Howard’s interview with Dave, after the match, he knows this match really hurts. He also knows that the UCLA match is now a MUST WIN match. If they had beaten Cal, then they could have lost to UCLA, and it would not hurt the Wahine. But now, if they lose to UCLA, it will take them out of all hopes of hosting a 1st and 2nd round match in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Steve

Did Cindy, chicken out, and go home????

    • warriorfan

      Youre such a weirdo…….

      • Steve

Now that I have calmed down, takes me a little longer, then you warriorfan. lol. I will agree Kastl gives the Wahine more firepower, not only from the RS, but also from the LS, when she rotates there. Goodman, really does not give the Wahine anything when she rotates to the LS. Just hope Kastl does not have any more brain freezes at important moments.

    • Cindy Luis

      STEVE, GIVE IT A REST.
      why would i chicken out.
I said I had a story to write.

  • Robin

    Cindy,

OK, the Baylor article was NOWHERE visible if you clicked on Sports at the top of the HA website and did not looked under Sports below. I looked everywhere and in the SPORTS section all you see is Warrior articles, HS football, the volleyball preview, etc. From the HOMEPAGE under sports is the only place you can see this:
*UH Volleyball: Wahine roll over Baylor

  • Queen Zelda of Wahiawa

Where was Jade tonight, she was invisible.

  • Robin

From my ‘endzone’ seat, I thought the last ball was wide of the antenna. Perhaps the reason for the standing around. Gotta play the whistle.

  • Islandvballer808

I feel like this loss is good for Hawai’i. They had the match firmly in hand until the yet that lead go in the first set. Congrats to Cal, they fully capitalized on Hawai’i not playing their best 100% of the time. I still think this Hawai’i team will go far this season. All the fans that are being overly critical & analytical need to remember that the Wahine need fan support in losses and not just wins. Right back Wahine! Let’s take it too the next three teams that walk into the Stan Sheriff!

    • Bud

Not sure any loss is good, but the win over Stanford is better than a win over Cal and a loss to any other team they faced thus far would have been worst than a loss to Cal.

      • Islandvballer808

Losses are good if a team makes it so… And with a great coach like Shoji & the kind of talent he has, they usually make positive changes through losses.

        • Bud

But there is no guarantee that a loss will make a team better. I would take hard fought, come from behind win any day to a loss. Plus these matches will have implications on post season seedings.

          • Islandvballer808

You’re right that they could get worse. But by you saying that no loss is good is off base. Losing is part of the metamorphosis of a team, no team has ever every single match. After the Stanford match, it seemed like Hawai’i lost its purpose… Not anymore. They will have renewed spirit. Most great teams & and legendary programs like Hawai’i do things like that which is the reason why they are year in and year out a national title contender.

          • Bud

There are teams that have gone undefeated most recently the Penn State teams from ’08- ’09. I don’t think Shoji would agree with you that this loss or any other for that matter was a “good” loss.

          • Islandvballer808

We’ll agree to disagree! Let’s enjoy this is season & see how they respond this upcoming tournament. Goodnight.

  • ninernut

    I agree 808

one of the reasons why i don’t like blogs is the vitrol.

a forum for those whose propensity to extrol their true nature and frustration in their own lives.

  • sharene

Tonight was frustrating. I think Baylor was a good team. They played hard…they gave everyone trouble…and their coaching staff was positive. They thought it was an honor to be here and they participated in all aspects of the tournament. They were a fun team to watch.

The tournament awards was disappointing. You can tell that everyone felt like we did not deserve the award. The crowd stayed but were not enthusiastic. It was not only Cal capitalizing on our mistakes but we were predictable. They were predictable going to their left side but we never blocked. Jade should have been in as their front row was really tall…when she was in she was effective.

We are supposed to have depth but we never used it tonight. I think the players were rotated so quickly…they never got their footing. Hartong and Croson should have been relieved. Despite being under the weather…Croson had double doubles.

  • Hot

Can I just say that I’m happy for Emily Maeda? I thought she played big. As for the OPP position, I think Kastl brings more heat on offense, but I like Goodman doing everything else well. Which is understandable, since Goodman is a true OPP IIRC and Kastl is still learning the position. On a shallow and lighter note, I’d give the spot to Goodman cause she’s purty and can lipsynch like no one’s business, as shown by Croson’s video.

  • TW

Yeah Emily! She has been undervalued and has finally had a chance to prove how much of a contribution she can make. Agree Kastl hits hard but Goodman makes the other team’s OH adjust and makes it easy for defense to play behind her. Guess it depends on where Dave thinks he’ll get the points.
