Oregon’s wins last week jumped the Ducks to No. 2 and pushed a few teams down

1. Penn State, based on everyone else losing, moved up from 4.

3. USC down from 2

4. UCLA down from 1

5. Washington stays put

6. Nebraska drops from 3

8. Hawaii down from 7

9. Texas stays put

10. Minnesota up from 12

11. Undefeated BYU up from 16.

    Hawai’i Small Schools…

    Tonight, (Laie) for conference supremacy:
    #13 @ #12

  • Vinny

I get Oregon jumping over UH,they were only 53 points behind us but #2 is kind of ridicules, lets see how long they stay #2

    • Cindy Luis

They will stay at No. 2 as long as they keep winning. and if Penn State loses, they would move to No. 1. Agree. let’s see where they are in a few weeks.

As I wrote in the previous link (see “Undefeateds Drop to 3 Out of 330 NCAA D-1 Teams”), the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll picked Oregon to finish 4th in the league. Only twice before in the Ducks’ 27 years of playing in the conference has the coaches picked UO to finish as high as 4th. These coaches know something about this year’s version of Team Shawn Olmstead.

As for Oregon staying at #2 “as long as they keep winning,” probably but not necessarily so. The Talls (as I call them) will host two Pac-12 opponents that are unranked, while Washington will take on UCLA and USC this same week.

Should Washington win both matches, I can see the AVCA voters putting U-Dub ahead of the Ducks, even if UO also wins.

As far as I’m concerned, the big news was the Cougars, which has now swept 11 of the 14 teams it has slaughtered. And in BYU’s case, the WCC coaches were way off base, calling this league a 3-team race (St. Mary’s, San Diego, and Pepperdine) that will go down to the last week of conference play.

They wont stay top ten long that usc win was a fluke, usc was obviously having a letdown after the ucla win.

  • I can see why they jumped to #2 since they swept and beat then Ranked #2 USC @ USC who was unbeaten @ that point and the Cardinals beat then #1 UCLA Bruins…. There’s definitely a-lot of shuffling around especially with with everyone beating everyone… what truley matters is who peaks and plays that solid games come the play-offs.

  • hapaguy

We only moved down to number 8. Thats terrific considering how we played in two out of three of our road matches…..

    • Cindy Luis

Coaches are pretty much looking at records, not how pretty it was.

      • setaone

true, coaches don’t have time to investigate “how” a team played.

Hawaii is very fortunate to drop one spot after two 3-2 wins.

        • Cindy Luis

well everyone else is losing and the Wahine won. the win over Stanford still carrying some weight.

          • hapaguy

I wrongly expected the voters to vote undefeated BYU and Minnesota ahead of us. BYU swept #14 Pepperdine and Minnesota swept at #20 Illinois. Cindy you must be right regarding the Stanford win still carrying weight with the voters….

  • Vinny

Dave voted his on team at #10,get a rope.

  • hapaguy

Ouch! Why is “Vinny” so upset?….

  • Beauston

Toyota Auto Body is REALLY good, they got ball terminators.
Wahine’ will be very busy digging balls

  • setaone

Must be hard voting…..so many ranked teams (highly ranked) teams losing.

    • Cindy Luis

Setaone, i have a hard time some times when voting on VB Mag. and it’s only top 20 with just 10 voters.
This is what the polls look like, with my vote, from this week. Where I have problems is after the top 12 or so.

Her club coach is UCLA assistant. She’s taken a visit to UCLA. I think if the Bruins want her, likely that would be her first choice.
Don’t know how much interest UH has but they’re always interested in top players so …. Does UH need another setter at that point. Maybe.

  • volleyball fan

Warriorfan, I read about Norene Iosia and she sounds impressive. But that’s four years from now that she’ll be a college freshman and by then UCLA will graduate its current setter and will be ready for a new one while Hawaii will have other setters and may not have room for her. Who knows what will happen four years from now? The article said she paid a visit to UCLA.

  • Vinny

She’s not as impressive as Higgins as a matter of fact she isn’t impressive at all but anyone or anything who is Samoan is impressive the Hawaii`i fans

    • Cindy Luis

Vinny, the story was from the Torrance paper, which decided she was worth a story i’d say impressive enough for a freshman. not like the Hawaii fans wrote it. Higgins, a senior, has had a few more years to pick up some cred and credentials.
