    Cindy,

do you have the 411 on wahine Aneli Cubi-Otineru….what kind of person is she? Personality wise? When I watch her, there’s NO smile…looks pretty intense or stuck up…Is she the opposite of what I’m thinking?

  2. Cindy Luis Says:

my opinion? sweet young woman. fiercely competitive. she smiles a lot. Guess you’re missing it. very much a calming influence on the court. She’s very confident in her game without being arrogant. great serve and line shot. I think she’s the opposite of what you’re thinking.

  3. matt Says:

Thanks for the response…Guess she’s into the game and just thinking what’s next….though I think she needs to show a little bit of a ‘good’ emotion sometimes…Just there’s no comparison when I look back at the 1987 winning team…they had GREAT vibes and energy…

  4. shar Says:

I agree with Cindy. I don’t know what you see…My impression of Aneli is that she is confident and a real leader on the court. I think once she said something like you forget about what happened and move forward and I think that is what she does. I see her smiling…but I see focus and leadership also.

  5. Cindy Luis Says:

Matt, the 87 team was special and you couldn’t miss Eagye’s smile. That being said, Ahuna’s game face was pretty intense. I can remember Don Shaw, the Stanford coach, saying after the final four, that he looked through the net after Game 3 (which the Cardinal had won) saw the look in Tita’s eyes and knew it was over. Hawaii won Game 4 15-1.
I think Aneli has a lot of good emotion, As Shar said, she’s a real leader. Everyone plays differently and may not even know how they appear to the outside audience. It wasn’t too long ago on this blog that people were criticizing Houston for smiling after she made a hitting error. Cubi-Otineru doesn’t have that dazzling smile that Ferrell or Eagye can flash. This entire team has had a way of letting things go and moving on to the next play. It’s been something that Sealy has worked on, so that they don’t let a bad play bother them for more than a point or two at a time.
You want a bad rotation? Stanford was up 18-14 against UCLA the other night, lost it 25-18. 11 straight points.

  6. Big Sis Says:

    Matt,

I’m guessing you never REALLY watched her play.. I remember some games where she did the “robot” and even did a high knee run after a kill. She’s a very exciting and skillful player to watch.

  7. Shar Says:

I’m guessing perhaps, Matt, that you watch on TV rather than at the games…because none of the Wahine display any snobbery or arrogance…I think they are a great team that support each other and are close. I believe Aneli is the floor captain (or something to that effect) and I trust the team and Dave Shoji to choose someone to represent us well. In fact, I remember that at last year’s senior night, Aneli went over to the visiting team to invite the players to sit with the UH underclassmen…I thought that was touching and showed a lot of sensitivity and thoughtfulness on her part…not stuck up in the least!

  8. Michael Says:

The fact that someone would question a players personality because she’s focused and doesn’t SMILE during the game amuses me. GAME time is when they get down to business. Perhaps Matt should look over to the cheerleaders if it’s smiles that he wants.
    Gimme a break!!!

  9. Cindy Luis Says:

As I said, everyone approaches a game differently and have different game faces. I think this is a very special team and, yes, Aneli is the floor captain. or co-captain. Think senior night will be a fun one.

  10. matt Says:

Michael, ever heard of the word ‘perception’? That’s what I learned in school where one gets educated. So, as my PERCEPTION goes, that’s all it is…don’t have to get butt hurt about it….but thanks for your input.

  11. Tina Says:

Aneli ROCKS! If anyone has a mean game face, it’s Danielson, but guess what? She ROCKS! They mean business, and I’m glad for it. Wahine volleyball is awesome!

  12. kazu Says:

I always look foward to Sr. night with all the festivity, but on the other hand its kind of sad because i know the season is coming to an end. I agree with Shar about last years Sr. night when the players from Cal Poly was invited over to the Hawaii side to watch the program. On top of that their Sr’s was also recognized.

  13. Cindy Luis Says:

People, people, people…. let’s not turn this into VT. Matt had a certain perception and asked my opinion and I gave it. Don’t know if he’s ever been to the game. TV doesn’t show you everything. As someone said, Kanani has a pretty intense game face as well.
Team was delayed out of SFO yesterday by about 3 hours. got in late afternoon. No practice this morning.

  14. Haushinka Says:

Has Amber ever thought about seeing a sports psychologist? She get’s so down on herself and sometimes never gets over it. I haven’t been to a game for awhile, so I don’t see everything.

  15. Cindy Luis Says:

don’t know. the team has used sports psychologists in the past. more about the visualizing about performance Amber hates to lose and is very hard on herself. She has matured quite a bit. she didn’t turn 18 until midway through her freshman year here.
