Hawaii-Baylor rewind
By Cindy Luis
pretty efficient night. Baylor no match for UH. Wahine hit 372, over .400 for both sets 2 and 3. liked that Shoji went with a pretty set lineup as they kind of get into a rhythm.
Goodman 3-2-8, Vorster 8-3-13, Croson 11-3-23, Hartong 18-2-35, Adolph 4-2-11, Kastl 2-0-2 in 2 sets. 1 ace (Croson, 7 SEs. 6 blocks 3 BA by Goodman, 6 BA by Adolpho. 39 digs, 8 by Longo, 7 by Croson, Uiato, Hartong.
Baylor hit 089, 4 blocks, 27 digs, 2 aces, 6 SEs.
Did speak to Feller after his match. he said he thought hawaii was a very good team and they were going to have to play well Sunday. Carey is doing the rough water swim Monday.
Charlie Wade dropped by. not much time to chat. apparently the coaches have had this contest to lose weight and he won, losing 30 pounds. he said mostly diet.
didn’t have time to get into the interview room. Guess you’ll have to read Ann’s story to get some quotes. I think Hawaii should be able to beat Cal. if they go 6-0 it would be the first time since 2004 when they opened 30-0.
have a good night and be back tomorrow. Aloha.

Volleyshots

Still think Hawaii needs more production from the right. Hard to gauge from this match, but 10 sets combined to Kastl/Goodman isn’t enough to give them a chance to do much. Also, it may just be me but at times it seems Uiato would rather force middle in transition than set Kastl on the right. Not complaining since the middles have done well, just an observation.
That’s because NEITHER (current) Opps are the best RS player that this team/Dave could be fielding night-to-night.
…there is one, however, who’d more than be productive on that opposite position.
—
From a purely athletics’ exercise/non-sport’s psychological perspective, Coach is going to end up taking ‘this’ mishmash a bit too far and thus ruining this 2012 season.
*Dave left London too early, but it’s kinda like what just happened @ the Olympics….Does Dave know that the #1 USA was BEAT by the female Brazilians in the gold medal match???
Who would be that “one” player Shoji should be using at the opposite position, then?
‘Ball control’
…this should be enough said.
The team is currently/obviously imbalanced to those–on blogs–who are MORE THAN merely casual fans or (yes) innocent “bleacher coaches”.
For those who KNOW the game, this lineup could be tweaked just a bit more to showcase (approaching) perfection.
steve/ex — by having this odd conversation with yourself, are you trying to convince the rest of us … or convince yourself?
either way, seems like an exercise in futility …
I just wanted to write down a simple word to be able to thank you for the precious guidelines you are sharing here. My time consuming internet investigation has now been rewarded with reasonable details to go over with my good friends. I ‘d tell you that most of us website visitors actually are undoubtedly blessed to dwell in a notable network with so many perfect professionals with great hints. I feel pretty fortunate to have discovered your web site and look forward to plenty of more entertaining moments reading here. Thank you once more for everything.
Agreed they really need to integrate the right side into the offence more. Kastl especially needs to be gotten on track. I know Shoji prefers the more traditional left side heavy offense (traditional at least on the women’s side) but the opposite as a real weapon (rather than just a blocker or a means of keeping the opponent’s middles honest) is one thing I wish Shoji would embrace more.
I simply wanted to construct a quick comment to be able to appreciate you for these magnificent hints you are giving out at this website. My extensive internet search has at the end been compensated with professional suggestions to share with my friends and classmates. I ‘d admit that many of us visitors actually are rather lucky to live in a great community with very many awesome people with helpful points. I feel extremely privileged to have encountered the web page and look forward to so many more awesome minutes reading here. Thank you again for all the details.
I wish Kastl gets more sets. Last weekend she did good against Albany, was set in bad times against Saint Marys, set only once against Stanford, not set enough against San Francisco, and played sparingly tonight.
I as well as my pals happened to be reviewing the good thoughts from your web blog and so instantly came up with an awful feeling I had not expressed respect to the blog owner for those secrets. All the boys are actually certainly warmed to learn them and have now truly been having fun with them. Appreciation for being so considerate and for deciding on this form of excellent issues most people are really desirous to discover. My very own sincere regret for not expressing appreciation to you earlier.
3 reasons Kastl doesn’t get sets some people want to see: 1) the opponents setter (usually shortest blocker) in most offensive schemes blocks against left side and it makes more sense to attack there; 2) the other team’s best hitter usually attacks from their left against our right so if the ball goes across the court into the back court it’s likely to be set to their best hitter cause than it is easier for the hitter because they (assuming it’s a righthander) are attacking with more options and court to attack; 3) both Kastl and Goodman get yanked in the back court for a defensive specialist who is usually more likely to be a spot server and cover more court which makes it highly unlikely that they (rightside hitters) will see as many sets as Hartong or Croson; and 4) because the middles have been surprisingly effective it behooves our side to utilize them to ‘keep the defense’ honest (s p r e a d o u t defending across the net) so the hitters including the rightsiders have split or single blocks in front of them. So while some might ‘want’ more from them, even Coach Dave, I think it probably is unlikely. But I think Goodman is doing good and Kastl is showing promise and keeps us with an option for the double sub ‘ala Stauber and Goodman last year which seems to be even more offensive because of her obvious potential to do attack the block.
I’m feeling critical this morning.
The National Anthem singers just keep getting worse and worser,. We need to go to a taped version like they do at our baseball games.
The team hadn’t even finished getting their leis and the three stooges along with dumb and dumber from the play by play team went into their lets all kiss up to Cal routine.
I disagree, the first match against Albany was a bit rough. Tsuji admitted it himself. However, the next night was a beautiful rendition done by those two local boys (one a former Warrior, Camarillo) and then the following night Lawson was superb.
I didnt get to see/listen to the singing if the national anthem for our USF match, but despite singing it pretty slow I feel Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu sang pretty good. If she displayed any nerves in her voice, wouldn’t you if we’re given a headpiece with a one-footed man attached to it to sing into in front of 5,000 people?
Vinny, when you call people names it just makes you appear uneducated and a hater which I am sure you are not.
I simply wanted to make a brief remark to thank you for the precious information you are writing here. My prolonged internet research has at the end of the day been honored with good quality tips to talk about with my friends. I would claim that we website visitors are very much fortunate to exist in a fantastic place with so many special people with interesting tactics. I feel truly grateful to have seen your weblog and look forward to some more fabulous times reading here. Thanks once more for all the details.
Why can’t they let the band play the National Anthem ?
Got to agree with Vinny on this. I don’t watch until i see them serve the ball.
I thought Makani did fine. The guy before her not so much.
Sorry too disagree but I think the singers are doing a good job. First of all most of them are singing
a capello, secondly their are not professionals, thirdly most of them probabley have never sang before thousands of people in a large venue, not easy to do. In my book beats hearing the same canned sound playing over and over again. These people are not being paid, I say kudos to all ot them. Takes a lot of courage to do what they are doing.
Sounds like some of you are tone deaf.
UH use to invite a mix of professionals and amateurs to sing the National Anthem. Lately it has seemed to concentrate on amateur singers from the high schools, UH, and alumni. Really a mixed bag in terms of singing ability, some really badly off-key but some really good too. I wish UH would go back to more professionals and even amateur glee clubs like the Sweet Adelines. I would not have to cringe so much.
My wife and i have been absolutely satisfied Chris managed to finish off his basic research from the precious recommendations he obtained from your own web page. It’s not at all simplistic just to be giving out things that many some other people may have been making money from. We fully grasp we have you to be grateful to for this. Most of the explanations you made, the straightforward web site navigation, the friendships you will make it easier to promote – it’s got many astonishing, and it’s helping our son in addition to the family consider that this situation is exciting, and that’s exceptionally vital. Many thanks for everything!
I think what people are seeing, and the people who the university is inviting to sing the National Anthem, and Hawai’i Pono’i, is in part to the repercussion (sp) of the Stevie Wonder concert fiasco.
that’s a reach about Stevie Wonder. has nothing to do who is lined up to sing. for the most part I think they’ve done a pretty good job. Liked the ukulele version.
If you don’t like the performing artist, just sing along with them so you hear yourself instead of them. Simply solution.
My wife and i ended up being really joyful when Chris could round up his homework because of the precious recommendations he got through the web site. It is now and again perplexing just to be giving freely instructions which others may have been making money from. So we acknowledge we have got you to give thanks to because of that. The entire illustrations you have made, the easy site menu, the relationships your site give support to engender – it’s many excellent, and it is assisting our son in addition to us do think that concept is enjoyable, which is truly fundamental. Thanks for the whole thing!
I think I would prefer a mixture of three: (1) the pep band, (2) amateurs from high schools, UH system, and alumni; (3) professionals, such as Danny Kaleikini and members of the SOS, who have sang the anthem in previous years. I agree that giving the opportunity for amateur singers a large stage for their singing is a good idea and should be encouraged. But not too much.
Lanaiboy, do not forget those different choir groups.
I really wanted to type a brief remark in order to express gratitude to you for these nice advice you are placing at this website. My long internet research has at the end of the day been honored with professional points to share with my two friends. I ‘d assume that many of us readers actually are unquestionably endowed to be in a good website with very many marvellous people with great concepts. I feel very blessed to have come across the webpages and look forward to really more enjoyable times reading here. Thank you once more for a lot of things.
In 2011, Satele averaged 2.15 kpg (.341%), 0.86 dpg, 0.67 bpg over 32 matches, including the usual WAC patsies.
Over 5 matches this season (UH stats only current to 9/1), Goodman/Kastl are averaging 2.15 kpg (.260%), 1.31 dpg, 0.74 bpg.
Not sure why there’s so much concern over RH production from 2 co-starters in their first season of game reps under Shoji’s system. Both should improve with more reps and even at this early stage, have matched Satele’s production despite sharing the position.
“Goodman/Kastl are averaging 2.15 kpg (.260%).. ” should be -> (.259%) [rounding error]
helu,
Don’t mean to “read” much into your post…I certainly don’t mean to degrade your/others opinon about Satele, but
In bursting your bubble (sorry Chanteal!): Satele isn’t exactly thee all-star opp of which any should be compared.
Just calling it straight, es all.
No prob. You assumed posting Satele’s numbers – Satele the goddess when, in fact, posting her numbers was simply a reminder to my inexpert self that there was little-to-zero 24/7 handwringing over Satele last season.
have to disagree. there was plenty of negative posts about Satele last year. no one called her a goddess. Hawaii’s attack has never been right-side heavy.
Did you read his comment? The “expert” claimed I posted Satele’s numbers as an example of “all-star opp” production when, in fact, I simply posted Satele’s numbers to illustrate the proximity of those numbers to Goodman/Kastl so far. So yes, no one called or implied Satele was a goddess, least of all me. As to 24/7 handwringing, I’ve no idea who or how many “commenters” submitted “negative posts” about Satele — nor do I care. What I *don’t* recall and alluded to was the *lack* of 24/7 handwringing by coach Shoji or staff, Ms. Miller or yourself re Satele’s production or lack thereof.
heluhelu merely said goddess because you had said it. there was plenty of negative comments here last year. but no there was no handwringing from me because I thought she was doing her job pretty well.
I am only commenting to let you be aware of what a excellent experience my cousin’s girl experienced going through your web page. She noticed a lot of things, which include what it’s like to possess an amazing giving nature to get many people clearly master specified complicated matters. You undoubtedly surpassed visitors’ desires. I appreciate you for coming up with those necessary, dependable, edifying and fun tips on this topic to Ethel.
It’s pretty even between both but Goodman is easier on the eyes so I’m backing Leahey’s Good Fairy.
Kill wise, both Goodman and Kastl are about even. Where Goodman has it over Kastl, at the moment, is her blocking. Shoji seems to trust Goodman’s blocking ability more then Kastl’s, right now. That is why Goodman (the Good Fairy) is starting right now.
Dave Shoji mentioned something last night that I found very curious. He said, ” the Wahine will not be an exceptional blocking team, so they must rely on their defense.” I just found that statement to be quite negative. What do you people think?
it’s a true statement why are you over analyzing it.
do you see us averaging 8-9 blocks a game?
po’okela, I just may be doing that, thanks, for reminding me.
exactly, they aren’t going to be a great blocking team and will rely on defense. nothing wrong with the facts.
Me thinks that Texas puts it ALL together, before Christmas, and FINALLY wins the championships.
–
Oh, to answer your Q because baby Shoji’s is a bit sparse…No, not negative, but shortsighted es all. Blocking is only one aspect of defense (digging being the other). The “defense” would be vastly improved imo IF Maeda subbed for Kastl @ L.

Out.
The OC girls on the team have a music video on YouTube. I wish I had the kind of energy.
Monica is soooo funnnieeee!
Vinny,
You have the link to it?
No I sure don’t Steve ,I saw it somewhere on VT.
Thanks anyway, just saw it via “not by reason” blog site. Thought it was kinda neat and funny. Hope Shoji does not see it, he might think he is not working the girls hard enough if they have that kind of energy.
Talk about how loose and carefree this team is. Cannot imagine last year’s team doing something like that.
Article about sand vb and mentions recruit Ashley Johnson playing this year

I don’t see a Baylor game article anywhere?
The article is there in the Sports section. For ALL Wahine articles consult Volleytalk.

A girl from Florida committed to the Wahine recently but I don’t know who she is or if it was for indoor or sand,
I mentioned that last week her name Is Sydney Shinn and she might walk on to the indoor team as well as play sand.
I am just commenting to let you understand of the excellent encounter my princess encountered reading through the blog. She realized a wide variety of issues, most notably what it’s like to possess an excellent helping style to make many people with no trouble know just exactly specified hard to do matters. You undoubtedly surpassed people’s expected results. Many thanks for distributing such helpful, dependable, informative and in addition unique tips on this topic to Jane.
I’m referring to a SA online article on the Baylor game specifically, not the Hawaii Athletics recap.
NOW I see it online…swear it wasn’t there before a little while ago.
Robin, don’t know what you’re referring to. it’s been up since around midnight, if not earlier.
I enjoy you because of your own efforts on this web site. My mother take interest in setting aside time for investigation and it’s simple to grasp why. We notice all of the lively form you present effective ideas on this website and attract response from some other people about this theme plus our own simple princess is now understanding a lot.
