Hawaii-Beach rewind
By Cindy Luis
well just lost a lengthy recap so I’ll see if i can remember …
good win for UH. they could have easily been down 2-0 and ended up being swept. I didn’t like their chances if it went to 5
agree Hartong used too much. 79 swings out 182. Kastl played well enough and Adolpho got on track late. someone said they didn’t think Vorster was getting good swings. a couple of her kills were overpasses and I do think the Uiato is still having problems with the shootset to her.
defense decent but UH has never done well with an aggressive setter on the opposite side. some of it is new alignments. some just camp fire hesitation. someone said they must not practice the tip defense in practice. Trust me they do.
We’ll see what happens tomorrow at UCI. Yes, they need another threat like Croson but until she’s back they’ll have to make do.

Hopefully Hartong lasts and coaching staff do something about it. Wahine has depth so never understood why they cant come up with a different line up for Hartong to still lead in kills for without killing her.
Looking forward to see what Higgins can do next season, Hawaii needs an offensive setter.
Maeda is one of their better players. Can’t they find a way to use her more? She goes out on the double-sub.
@Beauston – no guarantee Higgins sees the court next season. With Uiato (will be a senior) and Stauber (will be a junior), unsure if Coach will carry 3 setters on the active roster.
@Hot – use Maeda more? She’s the top defensive/serving specialist, so I’m not sure what you mean on your “can’t they find a way to use her more” comment. She comes out when rotating to the front row.
No guarantee on either Stauber or Uiato , yes they’ll have the experience, but talent trumps that so we’ll see. A lot of impressive freshman out there. It all boils down to see who can best carry the team offensively.
Tiffers, I meant let Maeda play a full three rotations in the back row for passing/defensive purposes. When she plays back row for Goodman or whoever’s on the right, she gets pulled for Stauber on the double-sub. Based on her performance this season, I think Maeda should be out there as much as she can. Oftentimes, when she has just subbed in, she’ll be replaced by Stauber on the double-sub, and Stauber will finish the rest of the back row rotations. I look at the box score and see Maeda with five digs or six digs in a four or five-set match.
BTW, I don’t think the overuse of Hartong lies solely on Uiato’s shoulders. It may very well be a coaching directive. In the Kim-Lily days, everything went to them, even though they had AA types in the middle and a decent RS. As for Vorster, she has an unconventional arm swing. She’s like Hewitt and Gregory. Sometimes it will work for her and catch the opposing defense off-guard, other times she’ll just look clumsy. As for Adolpho, that is NOT Uiato’s fault. Girl is slow. How bad is Tuaniga that she seems to have fallen behind Hagins? Injured again?
I think 33 kills is a school record since the sets were shortened to 25, someone with the media guide can look it up.
I think Jamie Houston more than that against USC but that was 30 point games.
I think so too. Kanani was the closest with 32 kills against Michigan State in 2010 and Utah State in 2009
#4 Nebraska lost to Ohiio State, and USC defeated Washington Huskies.
From the Big West official site:
* Emily Hartong had career highs of 33 kills and 15 digs. (Hartong’s 33 kills came off 79 attacks with only seven errors for an impressive .329 hitting percentage.)
* Ashley Kastl had a career-high 19 digs to go along with 13 kills for her third straight double-double.
* Kalei Adolpho added a career-best 10 kills.

Following has nothing to do with Bows vball but there’s a vague connection in the sense that the Wahine is travelling to UC-Irvine.
As part of the program’s annual “Spooktacular” event, the UC-Irvine Anteaters baseball team members will practice in full costume. Click on the following link for photos:

What Emily H. gives us is the ‘timely’ kills in that she is there when we need it. Late in sets and with the block stacked against her. In the course of sets, others get their kills but just looking at the discussions, people seem almost ‘surprised’ at who is contributing while I guess almost expecting Emily to ‘get those numbers’. I think some of the ‘early’ losses are due to teams loading THE RETURN of she who must be reckoned with. Come on Jane, we need you before Emily’s right arm falls off. And then when other teams start getting split blocks the others will get their kills in between.
They seem to have a lot of service errors when they are under pressure, and I’m glad the Wahines started to relax more and have better control serving after the 2nd set. 6 errors in the 2nd and 10 altogether. Very exciting game tho. Go Bows!
the best and most impressive part about Hartong’s performance last night is that she still hit .329 … with those 33 kills in 79 swings. that is tough to do in a long match with the block leaning your way …
good for her! let’s spread things around today against Irvine … so we can give her arm some reprieve …
Hartong has been a force on the left. The number of kills is impressive but to do it and hit .329 is amazing.
