Hawaii-Boise State rewind

October 29th, 2010
By

Pretty efficient night for Hawaii. Wahine hit .366, but only one block in Set 3. Took 85 minutes. Not a bad crowd 4792 turnstile, 6435 tickets. 20 digs for Ka’aihue out of the team’s 51.
Shoji said in Games 1 and 2 team looked energized, that was good to see. Said they wanted to play well tonight and now will concentrate on NMSU. Priority is to stop Giddens, and not let Woods get hot. Expects it to be a tougher match than the one in Las Cruces. Said Ka’aihue making outstanding plays, not much getting past her.
Boise State coach said Hawaii was a special team, that Ka’aihue was really good, said they couldn’t defend Hawaii when UH is in system.
Asked BSU coach about the NMS-UH match. said that the WAC 2-8 was pretty even, thought NMU would score in the ‘teens’ but that Hawaii was just a better team

OH, about Uiato.
Shoji said she will be here through the HPU match. Apparently there’s a surgery in the family that she’ll be going home for and that she’ll meet up with the team in Fresno.

AND no pink jerseys. they forgot to order them in time. There will be pink volleyballs that will be autographed and auctioned off.
heading over the Pali. check in later.

They forgot to order the pink jerseys. Last year the jerseys alone brought in $ 6,714 and they forgot, unbelievable.

    • Cindy Luis

Just passing along the info, Howard. More that they didn’t think to put the order in until it was too late. Not like it’s been a tradition. Last year was the first time.

      • Howard

I realize you’re just passing along the info I’m just thinking out loud, where are their heads ?

It’s like hey we made a ton of money on this maybe I’ll make a note of it in my planner and we can do it again next year.

        • Cindy Luis

Re: pink jerseys. Mike Sealy was apparently behind it last year. UCLA had been doing it for a number of years. Assistant coach Kim Jagd was going through chemo back then.
I know two years ago it was Kaufman who dyed the sox pink and gave them out.
yes they dropped the ball. but you can still bid on the pink autographed ones from Friday and Sunday matches.

  • Howard

This team isn’t taking anyone for granted and they’ll be taking care of business on Sunday.

  • wahinemaniac

I loved the ENERGY and LET NO BALL DROP TO THE FLOOR ATTITUDE. To me. this was one of the best overall match from hitting hard, pass-receive, digging, and good set location. Now, if they can build on that we will be awesome and have a great chance to be on TOP at the end. It just gotta frustrates teams to see all their kills come back up like tonite.

  • jesusofsuburbia

Go Wahine.. Sunday will be a good match and important one for them.. Just hope the girls don’t party too hard Saturday night. However, I am confident that they realize the magnitude of the match on Sunday.

Does being home and playing at the SSC help, after a tough road trip,Kanani looked better

  • Conrad

I was able to watch it online, and agree Hawaii looked a lot better at home then what we saw on ESPNU last week. Guess its good to be back at the SSC.

And in comparison to ESPNU, K5 is so much better. I have to say that Ryan Tsuji is way better then that USC chick and even better than Lisa Strand. He should be calling more games in my opinion. And forget Chris, he’s not a true Hawaii fan… He bleeds Stanford Red now. Just keep Tsuji, he’s better and is able to correct Leahey with all the mistakes he makes.

  • Lahilahi

I agree about keeping Tsuji on. He does a great job keeping Mr. Leahey in check. The old guy didn’t sound as bad as he usually does.
Cindy, can you ask John Fink to “think about it?” you know…keeping Tsuji on for the rest of the season. LOL

  • kanani fan

am i the only one that thought kanani looked a bit off?

she’s not hitting as hard and her elevation doesn’t appear to be where it normally is…

    • Cindy Luis

I thought Kanani played well. don’t know if her knees are bothering her again. she pushes so hard and does so much elsewhere.

  • kanani fan

yes i understand teams are camping out on her but when have they not?

  • idontgivea

josh taylor’s sister nikki is killing it as a sophmore on kaisers vball team…

is she the next big thing for hawaii?
anyone seen her play recently with any insights?

    • warriorfan

She definitely has alot of potential, I hope the coaches scoop her up before Nina Matthies and Pepperdine do.

Also freshman Alohi Robins – Hardy from Kamehameha, she is gonna be a tremendous setter and might grow to 6′ 2 or 6′ 3.

  • idontgivea

also babes daughter peka (aneli’s niece) is coming into her own at kahuku… as a sophmore.

    future of hawaii volleyball?

  • Puahi

Whats going to happen with Ma’a? Where is she looking to go?

Cindy, agree with conrad… Get Ma’a's mother Lisa and Mclachlin out of there. Tell Fink that he should hold on to Tsuji before he gets scooped up by OC16. Much better insights than anyone I’ve heard this season.

And also, tell they coaches if they need help, I’ll organize the ordering of the Jerseys seeing that they don’t know how important that was. Someone dropped the ball on that one, and its disappointing as it was to help a great cause.

    • Cindy Luis

When I spoke with Ma’a's mom recently she said she wasn’t sure where her daughter would end up. Dad took her on a west coast trip. She really liked USC but may take another look at UCLA now that Sealy is there.

    • Cindy Luis

I don’t understand the animosity toward McLachlin and Ma’a. both are veteran announcers and have been great volleyball analysts for years..
it never bothered anyone until a/Chris, a former stanford player and coach, went to help out Stanford where he could also coach his son. b/ Lisa’s daughter may or may not play at UH.

  • Yabba - Dabba - Doo

If only we could mute the voices of the announcers but still hear the roar of the crowd. Truthfully I don’t need to hear the opinions of a talking head or do I need someone to do the play by play on TV.

    • dino

For the uneducated volleyball fan like myself,i really appreciate the insights and comments Ryan Tsuji provide.Must say Leahy family has done much for Hawaii sports but now his play by play is distracting, sorry Jim

  • A broadcaster said Hartong was quick. She hit a ball twice, I perceived, while she was still in the air. Impressed me and the broadcaster, it seems. Reminds me of Musashi who slashed 3 guys while coming down from an elevated platform while still airborne. Beeg puka when Kaaihui goes. Who else can do 20 digs in 1 game? If she and the team keep the momentum going, improve a bit, then final 4 and maybe finals. ?:Hartong and Forsythe together much more?? 1 good thing about being in the WAC: the subs get more playing time.

  • Howard

Heard the Aggie players PO’d with Jordan especially the new ones.Thought they were going on a Hawaiian vacation.

Jordan is trying to recreate 2008 has them confined to the hotel. No play time ,no beach, shopping trips, all business.Heard he even brought along the trophy for good luck .

  • Cindy Luis

Oh please. They come every year. They wouldn’t be expecting a vacation, especially the veterans. Their practice started at 3.

  • Howard

Not kidding it came from one of their seniors.

    • Cindy Luis

Then I’m very surprised. They’re here to play volleyball not get a tan.

      • Howard

Usually when teams come here sure they practice, have study halls, film session like any road trip but they also get a good amount of down time where they go to malls, get some beach time or go sight seeing.Thats why they love coming here.

        • Cindy Luis

I know they usually get downtime. Your original comment was they were expecting a vacation.

          • Howard

Sweetie I didn’t mean a real vacation I meant time to play, have fun besides playing volleyball.Remember these are young girls and girls like to have fun too.

  • Jogga

What trophy are you talking about? NMSU may have beaten UH but I don’t think there was any time when they beat UH for a title and got a trophy unless my memory is that bad.

  • Howard

They just showed some of the girls at the football game.

    • Cindy Luis

In the office where, like many PPV subscribers, we are NOT getting the game. listening on the radio. Shoji gives the players the option to attend games, tells them to be smart and stay out of the sun.

  • Howard

LOL I was just thinking about Yabba Dabba’s theory on football games and a early Sunday match.

  • Jogga

Well, I guess if they wanted a trophy that desperately, they can do anything to justify they are the WAC champions – basically in their own minds.

    • Howard

I got banned from their scout board because I question the silliness of rings for tying another team for 1st place in the regular season when Penn State had to win a National Championship to get rings.

  • Jogga

Who paid for the rings for NMSU? Was it the school? I hope so. I sure hope it wasn’t the WAC.

  • dino

Just got back from Warriors romp over Idaho.I saw Brittany,Liz,Mita,Forsythe,Tuaniga,Maeda,Goodman walking around the student section.I assumed the whole team was taking in the game. The girls look good and happy as they enjoy being student-athletes.As someone posted, sunday game after football may be set up for upset and NMS prepared and angry? Great, hope underdog NMS gives it their all vs our Wahines,we need a challenge.See you all there…

  • Cindy Luis

Don’t know if the whole team went but did see the replay today and saw a number of them at the game. As Shoji will say, they are college students and should be able to be college students.
