Don’t think you can tell much from tonight other than Hawaii’s middles can play when when Uiato can set them.
Did talk to Hartong about her moving to the right. She says she likes it, feels a little freer out there and that it opened up the offense for her lefts to be involved
Shoji came in and said Kastl played well, obviously looked more comfortable on the left.
Said he had wanted to do that lineup sometime this weekend, with Hartong on the right, Kastl left. said Kastl puts a lot of pace on the ball. Said that if it didn’t work out, they could go back to what they had been doing.
A little of that was not wanting to show everything to Sealy. Shoji said Sealy was playing games, with 2 setters and 2 rights over 2 nights. And he agreed he wasn’t showing his hand.
Said he didn’t want to be extended tonight, get out in 3, thought last weekend they worked really hard on Saturday and were a little tired going into Cal.

Should be interesting tomorrow. When Hawaii is in system they can beat anyone. UCLA didn’t play all that well tonight but some of that was a different setter, a couple of lineup changes. I expect them to use Klineman more Sunday. She didn’t play tonight. And I think Strehlow. Hawaii knows Moenoa better, having recruited her.
The key will be Hawaii’s ability to run the middle and slow down Kidder. Aquino didn’t play particularly well and Love didn’t get a lot of sets.
Uiato will need to run a quick offense and the Wahine will need to serve tough.

      • Steve

I am expecting Strehlow to be the starting setter for UCLA, tomorrow. Also, I am more worried about Love, then Kidder. I am not saying Love is better then Kidder, but Love can go off, if you put to much emphasis on Kidder.

        • Warriorfan

Love is a tip queen, but I don’t think her tips and off speed shots will go down as much as they did last season.

          • Steve

Love looked pretty awesome against Nebraska. Basically carried UCLA during that match, since Nebraska basically shutdown Kidder.

    • Steve

Cindy, wish you had asked Hartong what she meant by, freer, playing the RS.

      • Cindy Luis

She means she feels freer to take a big swing. as she does on her step outs. ball comes across her body, gives her more time on the attack.

  • Lanaiboy

When Vorster got two quick hits at the beginning of the match, I thought that was it for Idaho. If Hawaii can set the middle and the right side with good sets, it can match practically any team in the nation. UCLA will be different. They are tall yet have great floor defense with Reeves and Todorovic. Last year, Shoji said UCLA was the best passing team Hawaii had to face that year. They lost the libero Gera but no one else, so I would assume Shoji would still have the same opinion, although Gera was a big loss.

  • Steve

If the Wahine bring their “A” game, and can get play even with UCLA, when the Wahine are in the rotation with Kastl, Adolpho, and Uiato, up front. They have a chance of beating UCLA.

    • gobows

that comes out to a 1 in 6 chance, so basically you are saying the wahine has no chance at beating ucla, unless jane serves a couple of 10 point streaks each set.

      • Steve

No, what I mean is, when the Wahine have Kastl, Uiato, and Adolpho, up front, if the Wahine can keep UCLA from going on long runs, meaning 3 or 4 or more points, then the Wahine have a good chance of winning.

  • Steve

What this new lineup represents is one big headache for opposing coaches. What lineup will Shoji use, and where will his players be positions. The Wahine will be so hard to prepare for. It is like a football team running the wishbone, then all of a sudden they show you the west coast offense. Which do you prepare for.

    • gobows

wow, the switch makes that much difference. i thought regardless of personnel, the wahine ran the same offense, more kinda like a change of qb’s or play makers rather than an entire different offensive philosophy. maybe small kine exaggeration.

      • Steve

Yes, cause with Hartong playing the RS, you know have your best 2 attackers in front row at the same time. Whereas, when Hartong was playing the LS, Jane and her were opposite each other. So you never had both of them in the front row at the same time. Defenses could gang up on them. But when both of them of in the front row at the same time, one of them is going to have a single blocker, it will be Uiato’s decision to decide who has the single blocker.

Cindy, is anything being done about the statistician? Whoever it is, they are doing a horrible job. Tuaniga had 4 or 5 kills, not 2… and that’s just the most glaring mistake from tonight’s game… mistakes have been rampant since the start of the season and although it may not be “big” mistakes it’s not an accurate reflection of the season as well as the records/history of each player and year. Not trying to be overly critical, but its really obvious…

    • Cindy Luis

we have told the person in charge the stats are horrible for the past three weeks. obviously has been done. trust me, we have tried.

  • TW

I honestly think any six UH players could have won this match. Idaho was totally demoralized and never seemed to get anything going. Best play was in the warm-up.

  • grammy

Yes. Change is good but I think that was after Coach was sure he had enough to beat Idaho (probably last night after he watched UCLA breeze through the Vandals). Any problems would have been addressed but as the night played out he had more than enough to win the match so he could give the bench some court time and did. Tomorrow will look more like what we’re used to seeing unless weaknesses need to be addressed or problems arise. But at least now we know we got more than one team and they can play in more than one combination with success. So, Go Wahine! Imua!

    • rayson

I actually think the exact opposite. They should start the new lineup and have the original lineup as the fall back.

      • Steve

I totally agree. This new lineup is going to give them a chance at the Nationl Championship, with some minor tweeking along the way, to perfect this new lineup. UCLA will give Dave a good idea what needs to be worked on, and tweeked, so that the Wahine will be ready come NCAA Tournament time.

  • Steve

This new lineup (rotation), now forces Uiato to read and think. What I mean by read, she needs to read the opposing teams middle, which way is she leaning and set the opposite way. Think meaning, should I (meaning Uiato), go to the Jane (LS) or Emily (RS), or even the middle.

  • Lanaiboy

According to someone on VT, Nikki Taylor is #26 on the Tawa’s Senior Aces. That leaves Higgins unknown yet; maybe learn today. She’ll definitely be in the top twenty; how high? Have to wait and see. Looks like Hawaii will have one of the top setters in the nation next year.

  • Vinny

Well the replay is on so I guess I’ll find out for myself.

  • Warrior15

Is the Hawaii-UCLA match going to be streamed free?

Right now that’s what it’s saying on the Oceanic link on the UH web site.

    • yes

it should be! it was streamed for free last night too even though tv was pay-per-view. i would try it early though. it kept saying buffering on my desktop but worked perfectly on my laptop.

    • Question ????

I’m still trying to figure this whole thing out.

If you live in Hawai`i and if you click on the link provided https://secure.oceanic.com/Streaming/,
and after clicking on “Watch on the Web” you get a video player that just buffers all through the match.

Oceanic use to say that if you live in Hawai`i you have to have their Road Runner service which eliminates any other service users like Hawaiian Tel DSL but this link doesn’t say that.

So I’m trying to find out if anyone here has Hawaiian Tel DSL and is getting the video ?

      • yes

i have Road Runner and my desktop said “buffering” all through the match but my laptop worked fine. some people suggested using a different browser or making sure whatever version of the browser you’re using is the most current.

      • Warrior15

i have hawaiian telcom, and did not have issues with the stream in the first 2 weekends. but i was not able to watch the stream the past 2 nights … i’ll guess we’ll see when i click the stream link later today …

        :)

Tayler Higgins is ranked #19 on Tawa’s Senior Aces.

So Hawaii has 19 and 26. Not much players but at least top ranked ones. 2013 will be a great year with only having 1 senior.

Hopefully recruiting goes well for 2014 since we graduate 8 seniors in 2013.

    • Warriorfan

19 and 26 is way to low for these two IMO, they will both have better careers than most of players ranked ahead of them. Guess we will see in 5 years

  • Vinny

With a Hagins and a Higgins on the team that will surly create a problem for Leahey. Watching the replay he kept call Hagins Higgins.

  • Vinny

    Anyone seen the SSC cat?

  • Vinny

Higgins,Hagins,Tayler,Taylor…Good times a coming for Leahey.

Jim doesn’t like the new substitution rule because it means that he has to keep track of more players.

Jim is no fan of black uniforms because it reminds him of Darth Vader.
