Hawaii seeded 15th in NCAA tournament

Sorry had to write a short story for our website and chat with the team. Here’s the link to the bracket

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ncaa/sports/w-volley/auto_pdf/DIBracket.pdf

Pretty junk selection show, no? Think it lasted all of 5 minutes.

Shoji, of course, not happy with the seed or the UW bracket. It’s pretty stacked while you can see Penn State and Florida sort of waltzing through theirs. And No. 3 Stanford probably doesn’t have much of a match until likely meeting USC in the regional final.

Hawaii’s bracket is brutal. with Nebraska, Cal, Minnesota, Michigan. Washington. Gotta feel sorry for Utah State, facing Cal in the first round. So those of you who said USU would be 1 and done, I have to agree now.
Who knows what would have happened if Hawaii had won the WAC. Can only speculate.
Hawaii should win Thursday but they will have to face the winner of Michigan and host UW. That won’t be an easy match.
Heading to the office to write my story. Will check in laters.

I utterly irritated at the NCAA..

  • JB

Another sensible bracket from the NCAA… Duke, LSU, Tennessee, UNI and Minny all seeded above UH? Wow.

  • Jogga

Hey Cindy, what does Dave think? Not to mention the girls.

  • warriorfan

This bracket is tough but expected this when the wahine choked in the wac championship.

Hope they bring their A game next week, Washington will be motivated to play in their own regional but I think Hawaii can beat them.

    • Cindy Luis

Regardless of the Wahine not winning the WAC, it’s a brutal bracket and not balanced at all.

      • warriorfan

Yes I agree , the east coast teams are being coddled by the NCAA and it is not fair at all.

      • Kimo

It hasn’t been balanced for a while. But this year’s brackets, especially the Seattle Bracket is RIDICULOUS! They should have just given Penn St. an automatic berth into the Final Four. They would have saved a lot of money and resources. All I have to say is the best of luck to the Wahine on their quest for a National Title. Take it one game at a time as you have all season long. Learn from your mistakes, and communicate. But most of all, play with a lot of heart and determination. That passion will help lead you to the end of your Rainbow; a National Championship!

  • Cindy Luis

Dave not happy at all. Said it was ridiculous, probably worse than last year. Doesn’t know what the committee is thinking.
The players know they have a tough road. Nothing they can do about it except prove it on the court … again.
Yep, JB, agree with all the seeds higher than Hawaii. Minnesota got some help when betting Penn State last night but why the SEC and ACC have suddenly become power conferences is beyond me.

  • jmy

UH played a relatively easy early-season (& struggled against some of those teams). The WAC season was a cake walk (which does not prove anything to the committee). Then, of course, they got swept by unranked Utah St. I guess that’s what the committee saw. Too bad, though. I wouldn’t count UH out. UW & Mich. have had major ups & downs themselves.

    • Warrior15

absolutely … everyone is beatable this year …

      • Cindy Luis

UH hardly played an easy preseason.
San Diego, UCLA, New Mexico, USC all made the tournament. Really don’t remember much struggling.
Opened with USD, a solid team and Hawaii had 3 new starters
Struggled a bit with SC, got in a bad rotation to start Set 5.

        • Warrior15

eh, there was some struggling … Michigan St took Hawaii to 5 …

but i agree, the preseason schedule was tougher top to bottom than last year’s. what it didn’t have this year was more marquee teams at the top.

we’ve talked about this before on the board … Hawaii played more top teams last year, but also had some real cupcakes in the preseason as well …

          • Cindy Luis

WF, sorry, overlooked Michigan State result in my haste to get to the office. Preseason scheduling is such a crap shoot. UC Irvine was supposed to win the Big West. You just never know when you schedule a year or two in advance how they really will be.
Hawaii tries to schedule as tough as it can but also has to take what it can get. Just because Hawaii invites you, doesn’t mean they accept. Economy has hurt, teams can’t afford to come out and Hawaii helps with expenses as much as it can. but they don’t have unlimited resources.

          • jmy

Last year’s pre-conference season incl. UCLA, Santa Clara, Cal, Stanford, St. Louis & Texas…much tougher than this year’s.

          • Cindy Luis

Thanks JMY, I wasn’t arguing about last year’s preseason being tougher. But that being said, Shoji expected some of the teams that came out to have better seasons, such as St. Mary’s and UCI

  • Warrior15

We’re speculating as to what would have happened if Hawaii hadn’t lost in the WAC final….

But because of the “regionalization” factors that the committee is forced to consider … coupled with the location of the regional sites this year … and add in the fact that USC is seeded (and thus Hawaii couldn’t be sent there yet again) …

Well, put all that together, and I think Hawaii was penciled in to go to Washington for a subregional even before the WAC final.

It’s a crazy tough path… but all we can do is (complain a little ;) ) and then watch our Wahine relish the “underdog” role that they’ve been relegated to …. and see them make a great post-season run to prove the committee wrong…

  • Jogga

Let’s face it. The NCAA committee has their favorites on who they want to win the national championship. If you ask them on camera, they will deny it, of course. But behind closed doors, they will do what they want to benefit the teams they want. And no one would be the wiser.

    • Warrior15

That’s hard to say … b/c from what I understand, the make-up of the committee members changes year to year.

    • Cindy Luis

Have to agree with you Jogga. 15th seed is an insult, particularly when you look at who is seeded higher.

  • Yabba-Dabba-Doo

Think negative and you defeat yourself before it even starts.

  • jmy

Funny how Cal is the 7th seed & Stanford is 3rd…That’s NCAA logic for you…

  • Warrior15

the observations on VT is that the committee adhered quite rigidly to the RPI (the most recent and final of which was released yesterday).

the top 16 seeds are essentially the top 16 in the RPI… with what looks like to me was a lot of movement within.

  • Jogga

    Northern Iowa #5 – HUH????

  • Cindy Luis

If you had been looking at the RPI, UNI has been up in the top 7 most of the season.

  • warriorfan

NCAA just hasn’t learned wahine will have to make the final four again to prove them wrong ( although its tougher this year )

    • Warrior15

      Yup … i like that…

it can’t be said that Hawaii doesn’t have any motivation to prove the committee and naysayers wrong!

  • RedZone

Good to be in the tourney. Why gripe? Just win.

  • Jogga

Knowing the NCAA committee, had UH won the WAC, perhaps UH would be facing #7 Cal. You never know.

  • jankenpo

    you make your own bed.

  • Spike

    I’m just disgusted.

The Wahine have no motivation to do well during the season. If they do well like last year, they get screwed. If the don’t do well, it’s just makes it seem like there is justification to screw them (which would have happened anyway).

They really are making the whole women’s volleyball tournament not fun at all. When it’s unfair bracketing, there is always a dark cloud that hangs over the whole thing.

Volleyball is my favorite sport but instead of feeling excited about the tournament, I just feel disgusted.

  • Cindy Luis

No, you don’t make your own bed. In this case, a computer does based on some BCS-based formula with no common sense to balance it.

  • grrrr go bows

I love how both washington and michigan legitimate top 15 teams get to play each other in the first round. The fact that neither are seeded is a hilarious statement.

  • jay

Hawaii is a dangerous 15th seed that’s for sure!

  • Warrior15

    agreed…

Nebraska can’t be too happy to potentially see us in a regional semi…

  • mario

Maybe they should format like the NBA. Western Champions vs Eastern Champions. Abolish the NCAA selection committee. Just pick the best 3 teams in every conference as representatives. That is the reason why we have championship tournaments.

  • 808ike

Wahines once again gets a pole shoved up their ____. I feel sorry for #23 Oregon, who didn’t make the tournament. There were 6 SEC teams that made the tournament. 3 of them are not ranked in the TOP 38.

  • Cindy Luis

I do think Oregon deserved to go. But there is all this love for the SEC … this is NOT football. and the ACC
neither of those two conferences have ever had anyone in the final four outside of Florida.

    • RedZone

i agree. It seems to be the case in all sports which is why I rejoiced when the wahine softball took down Alabama at their house.

  • John

Let`s all sing along… “SHAFT” mmm, mmm, mmm,. Wanna bet Northern Iowa and some of the other seeds higher don`t make it past the second round? No, I didn`t think so. Wahine did get royally screwed! That regional looks like MURDER! One game at a time girls..

  • satch

All you whiners stop complaining….you complained that Hawaii deserved a higher ranking than No. 3 so now is the time to put up or shut up and that incl. Shoji, also…..Just go out and play the game or the teams and never mind whining about being in a tough bracket and all that nonsense which he will use as an excuse should he lost in the first round. If you’re No. 3 in the nation, THEN GO OUT AND PROVE IT AND SEEK REDEMPTION FOR THE LOSS IN THE WAC TOURNAMENT. Nothing more-nothing less. Believe me, I just want Hawaii to go out and play smash ball against all these teams and show the NCAA, like last year, they are deserving to be in the Final Four but, please, all you fans, stop whining about the bracket.

    • Warrior15

my complaint has nothing to do with Hawaii seeding. i wasn’t expecting them to get a good seed anyhow. nor is my complaint about hosting. i’d love to see Hawaii host some early rounds some time — they deserve it — but recent history has shown that it’s not likely to happen unless the NCAA changes its selection criteria.

my only gripe is that the brackets are so imbalanced. it hasn’t been balanced in some time now. but i never thought they put out a bracket so heavily stacked in one region (the 2 seed’s region, no less — when the 4-5 seeded region is technically supposed to be the toughest).

that said, i think Hawaii is capable of beating all teams in their path. of course, i want and believe that Hawaii will go out again and prove their worth in the postseason. i’m ready for the matches to start.

but there is also value in pointing out that the process the NCAA is sticking to doesn’t produce fair results across the board. not just for Hawaii but for many other teams as well.

  • Cindy Luis

The point, Satch, is that Hawaii’s RPI is 11 and they were seeded 15, in the toughest bracket.
I don’t hear whining. I hear a lot of disappointment in that the selection committee doesn’t use common sense, uses an RPI system biased toward BCS conferences, such as the SEC and ACC that are not volleyball powers.
Florida and Penn State have a cake walk. Stanford pretty much.
People just want some fairness and this isn’t it.

  • Spike

Satch, when has anyone ever complained that Hawaii deserved a higher ranking than #3? If you want to make a point, it would help if you didn’t rewrite history and make strawman arguments.

Bottom line is the bracket is unfair (again!). Too bad if you don’t like that being pointed out.

I have no doubt the Wahine will do the best they can but let’s not pretend things are not stacked against them.

  • John

Agreed! Penn State and Florida have a cake walk, a waltz, and everything else. I`m not complaining either Satch! Just as Cindy said it`s just not balanced at all!

  • satch

Every year its the same disappointment (whining) being expressed about how unfair the brackets are esp. re: Hawaii. Quit crying over spilled milk every yr. Just shut up and go out there and play the game instead of constantly complaining or expressing disappointment over something one has no control over so all I want is UH to go out there and smash some balls and get to the Final Four and show the NCAA selection committee, like last yr., they deserve to be in the Final Four and will play anyone..any time…any where..that’s the mark of a true champion.

    • Spike

Complaining about an obviously unfair tournament bracket is not being a whiner. It’s standing up for a hard-working team and calling out the biased committee. Why don’t you quit crying about people stating their opinion?

I do agree that the Wahine have to just go out there and play and show what they’ve got but, again, they face a MUCH harder road then a lot of less worthy teams.

  • Jogga

Well they showed last year they can get to the Final Four – where is the reward this year?

  • dino

OK no whining, so im looking at it this way,get past the 1st round then we are in the FF. Cal,Nebraska,Hawaii,Minn?(well they beat Penn State)many have projected as such except Minn.Wait, forgot we have to get past Washington at home…hmm…whine.whine.whine…

  • Warrior15

so who knows anything about Portland St? (I know nothing…

and if we advance … what are the keys to defeating either Washington or Michigan?

in the few matches i’ve seen, Washington looks to be the more balanced of the two … Michigan relies on Hunt a lot (who i’ve read elsewhere may be dealing with an ankle sprain).

both have experienced AA setters (Hagglund at UW and Zimmerman — who HI fans know well — from Michigan)… and also players experienced at making deep runs into the tournament.

  • dino

Hoping we get Michigan,UW looks balanced yet inconsistent but at home…Wahine needs to focus on themselves and play up to full potential and then we can play vs any team

  • satch

In regards to Spike’s comments, go on the websites for Portland St., Minn., California, Nebraska, Washington, and even Utah State and there’s nary a peep of any disappointment of being placed in a bracket. Probably the NCAA selection committee is nauseated hearing about Hawaii fans ALWAYS expressing their disappointment which is why Hawaii is placed in such a bracket…don’t worry…Hawaii will show the selection committee this year and esp. next year when all that talent comes in that Hawaii deserves to be a host but until then or if it ever comes, JUST PLAY THE GAME .

  • Spike

Simple answer, Satch, none of those teams are consistently screwed like Hawaii has been for the last 7 years. Portland St. is just happy to be in the tournament and they are playing within a stone’s throw of their home. Utah St. is also just happy to be dancing at all. (And if you missed it, their coach was disappointed with their matchup with Cal in the first round.) Why would they complain? Washington is unseeded and hosting the subregional and the regional. Why the heck would they complain about anything? Minnesota, Cal and Nebraska are ALL hosting subregionals. Gee, which team here is not like the others? Get a clue or at least try to get your facts straight before you just start spouting off.

  • wtdoor

Me thinks that the only thing that will enlighten Satch is if the Wahine pull off a “Satchsquashing” of their bracket….
