Josh Leonard hurts ankle
By Dave Reardon
A couple of notes that apparently didn’t get into the paper:
Injury report
The Warriors came out of the game relatively unscathed, except for defensive tackle Josh Leonard. The senior starter was on crutches after the game.
“My ankle got rolled with about four plays left,” he said.
Starting senior linebacker Adam Leonard left early to have a hand X-rayed, but returned during the first half and finished with nine tackles.
Special stuff
The Hawaii special teams had one of their better games, especially on kickoff returns. In addition to scoring the winning touchdown on a pass reception, Malcolm Lane replaced Ryan Mouton as the primary returner. He consistently gave UH good field position with 115 yards on four returns.
“We had so many creases,” Lane said.
The performance was especially gratifying to special teams coordinator Ikaika Malloe, who missed part of the week after undergoing an appendectomy.
“We always knew (Lane) had the talent to do the job,” Malloe said. “We just had to make sure we gave him some room. We placed a huge emphasis on the wedge.”
Former starting slotback Aaron Bain returned three punts for 25 yards.
J.P. Davis downed two Tim Grasso punts near the Nevada goal line.

Paul,
Malcolm Lane’s kickoff return performance was great because did got the 115 yards in 3 returns not 4, averaging 38 yards per attempt.

Several of us saw the hit on Josh Leonard. I’m glad you published the article about Leonard getting hurt since several of the crowed that were watching from my home, saw the late hit and all said “we hope he didn’t get hurt”. Hope there will be a follow-up story since it looked like someone was deliberating going after J. Leonard.

The good news today is that Greg McMackin said Josh Leonard will be able to play Saturday at Utah State, it was just a minor tweak.
