Leahey’s return for 2011

July 19th, 2011
By

It is hard for me to weigh in on this since I don’t hear what he is saying for most of the matches. I am at the matches soooo if I do listen it is on a replay when I get home, mostly if I want to confirm what I wrote about is what I believed I saw.

I will say that when watching other outlets do volleyball, I do believe that Hawaii TV has been the best. I like the sideline views and not the baseline views which most coaches prefer as they watch the play develop.

As I posted earlier, I am surprised jim is back. Only because it sounded like, when I last spoke to him, that he was going to be done. His wife has had some health issues and thought that might play into decisions.

  • Last Call

I mute the TV and listen to Scott Robbs on 1420. Scott is the best at volleyball.Leahey might be a great person but he stinks as a sports commentator.

last call – that is your biased opinion. Jim L. has a broadcasting style inherited from his dad, which is very unique but very effective for Hawaii. His broadcasts, whatever they might be, football, basketball, baseball, vollyball, are very engaging and entertaining, especially for the casual sports fan. This is his legacy and it has captivated Hawaii sports fan for many years. I know he is getting old, but hopefully, he can continue to broadcast as long as he can. When he hangs it up, it will be an end of an era. Even Kanoa, has a different style, as good as he is. Right now, there is no one better to broadcast any sport in Hawaii, both on radio and TV. Jim L will always be an icon, just like his dad, Chuck. Mahalo, Jim for all the memorable years, and hopefully many morel.

I agree with lsat call. Both commentators are awful. Chris likes to always point out who is all WAC and how great they are. But when they are playing awful I really don’t care what WAC accolades they get. Leahey cannot remember the names of 12 players on the court at one time to save his life. His job is to know the names of the players at least and he cannot even do that. The best was when he kept calling S. Ferrel, K. Danielson even though Danielson wasn’t even on the court. It’s 12 players and they have different numbers to booth. If he was a new comer he would have been fired. I cannot stand watching the matches and hearing both of their voices. It dumbs down the sport. Bring in new blood so that the viewers can feel excited again. Both of them sound so bored. And don’t get me started on Billy V. and Ben Kiaaina. I go to every match and I cannot stand either of their voices. So fake and forced. Yes there are worse commentators, but UH has been doing this since the 80′s so they may want to continue being the standard everyone looks to. Otherwise like the UH teams, the rest of the country will pass them by. Mediocre is not good enough. I don’t care who’s uncles they are, there is an expiration date for everything.

For anyone interested enough to Read or Post here, no matter which side of the line you’re on …

    MAKE SURE You see (Programmed your DVR?)last night’s Leahy & Leahy [Re-Broadcasts on Saturday] with Robert Kekaula (New Football Play-by-Play for OC-16); V. Likely will prove to be Genius to Add Color Man “Nasty” Nate Ilauoa (who played smart and fast enough to re-define the shovel or shuffle pass into a National Strategy) sorry i know this is VB);

it was noted that KFVE was SO CHEAP …

While i find it inappropriate to criticize someone who does the job better than i ever likely could, i DO think VB is Too Fast a sport for Jim — He Excels in Baseball with Eldredge; while Scott has more passion i do think he “Crushes the Coconut” a bit too often (overly repetitive?)

Anyone know what channel volleyball will be on this year ? I keep hearing stories about some new UH sports channel.

Still discussing UH sports channel. nothing confirmed. but can tell you OC15 is not ready to take over this job from all that I’ve heard.
have to disagree about broadcast quality. KFVE’ is far superior to the mainland broadcasts, especially the camera angles. The game is too quick for Leahey, agreed, and he relies on the monitors too much instead of watching the court. Chris does his homework. He is a color guy so what he is supposed to do is augment Leahey. what he may only have time for is to say … all-WAC or whatever.
Scott probably says ‘crushes the coconut’ too much but it’s something he does to add to his broadcast when he’s alone. He is very good at what he does.

Why is it that when Leahey makes a mistake, no one bother to correct him? Very rarely they correct him. He is human and he is going to make mistakes. Is it about respect? I got to say although maybe VB is too fast for him at this point, there is something comforting about hearing him on the TV games. Don’t know what it is.

  • Cindy Luis

Jogga, the only one to correct him would be the color guy and they aren’t going to do that on air. I’ve heard Chris correct a mistake numerous times but he doesn’t do it in an obvious manner. more subtle.
