Mack: “We’re going to platoon” at QB
By Dave Reardon
That’s the tentative plan for now, Greg McMackin said in a brief phone interview this afternoon. Hey, it worked last night. No decision on a starter yet for Saturday’s game at Utah State. But the coach said he wants to make a decision before Tuesday’s practice after reviewing tape with the staff.

Dave might be good to platoon the “O” line too. 7 sacks last week and then 6 this week is still a huge concern. I think Nevada was only averaging less than 3/game, so them getting that much last night really jumps out again.

The only good thing about the platoon, is we get to see all the QBs get some snaps. But after engineering the game winning drive, I don’t know how Mack can’t give Alexander the start next week. I think he deserves it. I still would like to see Graunke get some time in the rotation too, but only if he’s ready.

UHM92 – I understand why people want to see Graunke because of his experience and his effort for the team the past few years, but he squandered his own opportunity and now he is struggling to return from his hand injury. Don’t you think it would be better to take what we have now at QB – Funaki’s feet and a coming along Alexander duo – and run with that? This team needs to plan for the future, and unfortunately for Graunke, he will not be here in the future. His time should have been this season, I agree. But if this team doesn’t settle on a QB soon, we will have the same problems next season. I think a platoon will work the remainder of the season, but if Alexander is going to be the guy for next year, he needs game reps. For them to switch back to Graunke when his hand heals at this point would just be foolish.

I agree, Graunke is not the future of the team, and I he’s likely not going to be going anywhere after college football either. But I’m not sure that Funaki is truly the future of this team either. We all want to see a local boy do good things for our Warriors, but I think Funaki might be better off using those feet and doing some RB instead of QB. I think he could be a hell of a running back. Only problem is if Graunke isn’t ready to really play because of his hand, and Rausch is out with his arm issues, there would be no depth so moving Funaki might not be a good move at this point.
I don’t know…I want the W’s as much as anyone. I just want to see them settle in so we can have a great finish!
