McMackin vs. Erickson?

November 30th, 2008
By

If there is one coach Greg McMackin is linked with more than June Jones, it’s Dennis Erickson.  And if Arizona State beats Arizona in their regular-season finale, it will probably be Erickson’s Sun Devils (or Arizona) in the Hawaii Bowl against UH. McMackin was Erickson’s defensive coordinator with the Miami Hurricanes, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. They also coached together at Idaho and San Jose State, and matched wits in the 1999 Hawaii Bowl, when McMackin was UH defensive coordinator and Erickson was the head coach for Oregon State.

I don’t know why, but I feel like I am craving a different team than Arizona St. While the last time we played them it was a heck of a game, I would rather watch other possibilities unfold. Don’t get me wrong though, Arizona St. over a C USA any day.

  • kev-1

Oh yeah, what’s all this talk of Notre Dame? Is that even a possibility?

  • sports for fun

any pac-10 team would be better than a c-usa team…unless it was smu.

  • UCLA may not qualify for the Hawaii Bowl, yet UCLA is the team that the UH should be playing against rather than a weak Arizona State or C-USA team! I am one of the few people who tried to get June Jones here to Hawaii to be our head coach. June did a good job of running our team and he kept his promise of making Hawaii a Top-25 team.

On the mainland I pulled for certain changes in college football to take place and the changes that I pushed for came about. I was one of many voices, but my voice sometimes carries much weight depending.

I also predicted in 2007 that our team would be undefeated and would possibly go to a BCS game at the end of the year. June Jones made that possible and it is June Jones and a silent host of other people behind the scenes that made that dream come true. These are the unsung heros of Hawaii college football in 2007.

Norm Chow is my second-cousin and this year UCLA has one of the best coaching staffs, a host of excellent players, yet a losing and rebuilding record which will not qualify them for even the Hawaii Bowl.

Most fans in Hawaii don’t know what’s going on in sports behind the scenes and the same I can say for college football.

The reason why I would push for UCLA is because (1) They are family to Hawaii and you always help family, (2) Norm Chow is their offensive coach, and (3) they’ve got some of the best college football players and coaching staff in the nation.

It would be a good experience for Hawaii and a great game for the fans, even if we lose! Our boys will gain valuable playing experience in playing experience in playing a team like UCLA, which we can take into 2009 against C-USA and other teams!

UCLA is family and so we should really play UCLA this year (in their building year). The experience that our boys will get will be unparalleled!

I speak as a person trying to help the UH build into a Top 25 team and recruit the 18th best quarterback in the nation to play at the UH in 2009!

    Are you people interested?

I would certainly like to know and is the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl aware of these ideas and what I am trying to do for Hawaii?

  • I would prefer to play the Sun Devils in 2010 or thereafter, when we have the 18th best quarterback in the nation with at least a year of experience under his belt. Losing to UCLA and gaining the experience in the Hawaii Bowl for 2009 is the better deal for Hawaii!

David A.K. Matlin and Jim Donovan should be so informed!

  • Funi

Arizona st. is the perfect team for us to play. Carpenter is awful this year and while their defense is ok, they won’t tear us up offensively like arizona would. It would be a close game, but UH could beat arizona st. at home and that to me is more important, especially for coach mack in his first year. It’s been an up and down year, but in the end, I know now that many of us will still be backin’ mcmackin!

    Dan Kelly = Mafs Brah!

  • UCLA won’t be bowl eligible even if it by some miracle beats USC.

  • Funi

I don’t know what Lester D.K. Chow is smoking, but if we could choose any team that’s BOWL ELIGIBLE to play hawaii it shouldn’t be ucla. While ucla has good ties to hawaii, the best matchup would be hawaii and byu. The game would be guaranteed to sell out and hawaii would definitely be pumped up to play them as a way to restart the rivalry (I’m glad donovan has helped to reschedule them in the coming years).

I’m glad Mr. Chow understands that ucla isn’t bowl eligible (less than .500 overall and both in their in conference and out of conference games), but i wonder what type of strings he could pull if he could get the NCAA, one of the toughest organizations ever, to change their rules to let a 4-7 (soon to be 4-8) team into a bowl game when several teams will be left out this year that meet the bowl eligibility criteria. Mr. Chow, if you could, instead of lobbying for ucla in the glamorous hawaii bowl, could you change the bcs system to incorporate a playoff system? It seems that would be much better and worth the time.

  • MTBackfield

Hey Lester Chow. When did Kahi Mohala let you out? I’m sure Norm Chow appreciates your rantings on his behalf. BTW UCLA is 4-7. NOT even close to Bowl eligible. Get a grip. If (in your fantasy world) UH were to play UCLA at Aloha stadium, I believe UH would win.

  • lori

ugh, dennis erickson is over the hill and so is MAC–what a boring matchup.
ASU after losing to UNLV hit the skids and lost 6-in-a-row.

I much rather see Turner Gill and his Buffalo Bulls.
At least they won the East Division.
The MAC was strong this year and except for Ball State–no team was safe.
    Toledo @ 3-9 beat MICH at A2.

Both the Big Ten and Pac 10 were lousy from 6 down.
Anyway, last time the sundevils were here they DEMONSTRATED an attitude about playing in Hawaii.
Find a team that wants to play in our Bowl….otherwise Hawaii, being second in the WAC has an option to select the HUMANITARIAN BOWL….should the donks decide to play elsewhere.

  • The Sun Devils are a really good team and Dennis Erickson a really good coach. The Sun Devils will prevail in the Hawaii Bowl, because we are really not ready to play them. Our team needs a lot of improvement. For all that Coach McMackin has done, I feel that he should be congratulated. No one can be expected to be a superman.

The Hawaii Bowl with Arizona State should be a good game. I was a solid Dennis Erickson and Arizona State fan, because of who is is, in the past, and I do believe in Arizona State.

UCLA though has the better coaching staff and better players than Arizona State, though they just lost to today (9-38) for shame. Yet UCLA is undoubtedly the better team. A far superior team, far superior, then Arizona State! And as I said UCLA is family and our warriors could learn from them. It is to our advantage in 2009 to play UCLA if we could.

UCLA is far superior! And their coaches would be willing to do stuff (showing us a few tricks) that Arizona State just can not do!

I would jump at the privilege to play UCLA over Arizona State, if I were Coach McMackin. In a pre-season or end of the year bowl game that did not count and did not have that much importance attached to it.

Even playing Florida and Georgia was a good opportunity for our team and for our coaching staff! You learn when you play the best teams in the nation! I would never do that, when we are trying to be undefeated and win a WAC title though!

Last of all, Nicely (18th best quarterback in the nation) and a few other players of his caliber might be coming to Hawaii in 2009, if Coach McMackin has saved enough scholarships for these guys.

When you sign up dead weight and use up your available scholarships on two star players or less, you are not going to have scholarships for the better players, when they become available!

The 1.2 million dollar plus that we pay McMackin better be worth it!

  • UHM92

Yeah, I don’t understand Mr. Chow’s desire to bring a losing program into a bowl game, then say how they are going to spank our boys in our house. I get the impression that Mr. Chow doesn’t believe in our program, which has done quite amazing despite the rebuilding and the mistakes that have been made.

Its time to pull out that level of support from last year….BELIEVE!!

    GO WARRIORS!

  • 808 Warrior

    Hey Lester Chow, I am also Norm’s second cousin, on my mother’s aunty’s nephew’s brother’s uncle’s side……UCLA ain’t comin’……..

  • Chow,

Only time will tell if your team’s staff is as good as you say but they ain’t in a bowl this year so you’re smoking something if you continue your thinking above. We played plenty of great teams this year and got a big one to play this week….much…much bigger than your team. Expect a good team for Hawaii Bowl no matter who it is that will make us better for next year.

Agree that JJ did so very much for UH and Hawaii. We were in the dumps before he came to lead us out of the bottom to a top 25 and BCS team. Coach Mac is doing very well too. He and his staff and players are the kind of people that will sustain our program at a high level for years to come.

Lots of love in Hawaii and on the mainland for the Warriors. All kinds of people working behind the scenes to help make them a success. That’s just the way most people are who love Hawaii and the Warriors all over the world. Aloha is what makes our State of Hawaii and its Warrior nation people special. Thats why players…good and great ones want to and will come to play as Warriors. Btw don’t believe everything the star ratings imply…its made up of a lot of smoke and mirrors too.

I don’t see ASU in Hawaii if they win, but rather Arizona. This is if USC wins as expected against UCLA. The top 4 will be USC, Oregon, Cal, and OSU. #5 choice is the Emerald Bowl. This is how ASU and Arizona will compare if ASU wins:

    1) ASU 6-6, 5-4 Pac-10, Arizona 6-6, 4-5 Pac-10
    2) ASU beats Arizona head-to-head
    3) ASU on a 4-game winning streak, Arizona on a 3-game losing streak
    4) ASU with 2X the enrollment of Arizona, Phoenix metro much bigger than Tucson metro area

If you were the Emerald Bowl and had 1st choice if the Devils prevail, why choose Arizona? Arizona will be left over for the Hawaii Bowl to take.

  • jjbanks

Sounds like someones alittle bitter. Maybe it has something to do with a second cousin not coaching in hawaii? Alot of me me me in his emails? easy kook!

  • Bigislandkurt

UCLA is not a far superior team over ASU. They are on par at the very least. Need proof? Watch USC destroy the bruins this weekend.

Since Mr. Chow is so connected in the NCAA, maybe he should work on getting rid of the BCS system and get Boise a shot at the national title game through a playoff system. For someone so connected and influential in the UH program, why did your cousin not want anything to do with the UH coaching job? Not that he would have definitely been hired anyway, but since we are speaking so hypothetically.

UH will play whoever steps on the field and be competitive. We always are in the Hawaii Bowl. Have a little more faith in the team you claim to have such a hand in and pick them over a 4-7 PAC 10 team. Come on!

And who is this 18th best QB in the nation that you keep talking about? And why wouldn’t you convince him to go to UCLA, since they are a better team, program, and whatever else you say they are?

Your intentions for posting what you did may be better than they are coming across. If you have good intentions for writing what you did, I apologize for my harsh comments. But if you are as off as you sound, you had it coming.

    Have a nice day.

  • Vegas odds 12-02-08:

    USC v. UCLA -27
    Florida v. Alabama -8.5
    Cincinnati v. Hawaii -6.5
    Arizona v. Arizona State -7.5

My comments: USC is expected to win and by a large margin. UCLA is new and in a building year. UCLA has acquired a new and first rate coaching staff, second to none in the nation. Players at UCLA is superior by WAC standards.

Florida has always been tough, especially in the last three years. And in 2006 Florida was the BCS National Champion. Florida over Alabama by 8.5 as expected.

To me this comes as a shocker, Cincinnati over Hawaii by only 6.5 points!

And last of all, Arizona over Arizona State by 7.5. Arizona is a tad bit better than Arizona State.

    Seven:

According to Las Vegas odds Cincinnati is favored over Hawaii by 8.5 points. I thought that the spread would be much greater like 30 or 40 points! At least 40, even at home here in Hawaii!

  • Funi

    Mr. Chow,

When UH beats Cincinnati or gives them the game that you aren’t expecting us to, you’ll be surprised. If you’re willing to give 30 points, I’m sure all us UH fans would gladly take them. Cincinnati has nothing to play for, they are here to relax and have fun. They could lose by 50pts and they’ll still go to their BCS bowl game. UH has a chance to beat a legitimate team and we’ve turned the corner with our offense, much like we did toward the end of the 2005 season. Plus, the rain the last 2 weeks has kept many fans away, tomorrow, it’ll be a great night, packed with fans ready to scream their heads off. If not that, then there will be more than enough people to throw beer on the cincy players this 2nd time around!

    Go Warriors!
