Too bad. He really showed Hawaii a lot of respect. Good luck to him in future endeavors. Dave, any word on Pat Hill leaving Fresno? I know he interviewed at UW. That would be a big loss for the WAC.

That’s really too bad. Mumme is a far better coach than people think because he coached at NMSU. You know that crazy offense that Texas Tech runs? Yeah, pretty sure there is big Mumme influence on that one.

Also, I’m pretty disappointed in the All-WAC team selections. David Veikune, second team? Are you kidding me? Mike Washington, first team? Ooookaaay, I”ll take that one.

Maybe Lester Chow wants to add some UCLA players to the All-WAC team since they probably weren’t good enough to be All-PAC-10. (sorry, had to take one last shot)

  3. kev-1 Says:

Apparently I need to learn how to read. Mike Washington was actually selected to the second team. I definetely take that. My bad. Sorry Mike, you deserve it.

Feel free to take your shots, since I took mine.

I really enjoyed Mumme. He was always glib and controversial at times. I got to converse with him one on one once while we were waiting for others to arrive for a press conference in Las Cruces, and he was just a personable guy, genuinely excited about the possibilities for his team if a couple of things fell into place. They had some bad luck, including a key defensive player and team leader dying in an offseason shooting incident a couple of years ago.

Mumme brought a lot to the WAC and will be missed despite his team’s W-L record.

Pat Hill will also be another big loss to the WAC if he is hired away by Washington. He interviewed the other day. I think the Huskies’ first choice is Chris Petersen. My guess is most Hawaii fans would like to see Petersen leave the conference, since it might slow down the Boise State machine (that was the thought when Dan Hawkins left, but it didn’t quite turn out that way).

  5. kev-1 Says:

Pat Hill is a top notch coach who will play any team, any where. I hope he stays at Fresno. Fresno St. vs. Hawaii is always one of my favorite games of the season. They are always entertaining, and is a heated rivalry. If Pat Hill leaves, so too may the intensity and the rivalry. And yes, I am among those who would like it if Coach Peterson said goodbye to the WAC. He’s a great coach and would repair the UW program.

Sad to see Hal go. Great offensive mind. Kev-1 is right wrt Tex Tech offense having a Big Hal stamp on it. Hal was a plus for the WAC. I’m sure Hal will land on his feet though … at least as OC for a team.

Pat will be missed too. Classy guy, tough and a lot of heart. Landscape of the WAC will change again and more so should Peterson move on else where. It’ll mean 3 teams that might change their ID next year a little or a lot even if BS promotes from within. We know what Mac, his Staff and Team is more about now with a few months of history. Next year we should expect more of the same…or more than likely a little bit better. Hope the newer WAC coaches bring good things to the WAC table even if it means a greater challenge to the Warriors.

good luck to hal mumme. he seemed like a guy you couldn’t trust. never liked pat hill either because he liked to get into your face or business kind of guy. chris petersen is my pick for head coach because of his competitiveness and respect for other programs. greg mcmackin is my pick for coach of the year.
    go warriors!

  8. KonaWarrior Says:

I remember last year when Mumme went on record as saying that Hawaii was the best team in the WAC, and this was only about halfway into the season. It was entertaining because it really brought out the ire of the Boise St. nation. Unfortunately, for NMSU, it became motivation for BSU to pound on NMSU not making Mumme’s resume look any better.

  9. chawan_cut Says:

I don’t know what NMSU is thinking. At least Mumme had an offense that could move the ball. They just didn’t have a defense. Maybe they were upset because Mumme couldn’t produce with his all star QB in Holbrook.
Now they’ll have to rebuild, just like Utah State. Were both fires really worth it? They’ll be hurting for a few years while they have to learn new systems.

This whole Pat Hill, fresno state (lower case on purpose), any team, anywhere nonsense has become nothing more than a hollow catch phrase. What’s the point of blustering on and on if all you do is lose “anytime anywhere”? Isn’t that what FCS teams do? They are overrated & insufferably whiny every year and their underachievement confirms their ineptness. Boise just hung 61 on the bullpuppies. They gave up 55 to the Toledo Rockets and lost to Louisiana Tech. Every year we hear their sycophantic and, as it turns out, worthless chants of, “B-C-S! B-C-S!”. They can’t even make it through the WAC with less than 4 losses and have suffered 3 straight (2 of them being HUMILIATING) losses to UH. Let’s all get off this pseudo high road attempt at singing Pat Hill’s praises.

  11. PIAA DS Says:

If Peterson gets UW, Im betting Boise just moves someone up, like they did with Peterson before. Why change up a good thing. if a new coach comes in, he’d be insane to let any of the current coaches go.

Ok, here is a list…add to it. What other schools that play/recruit Hawaii have had firings? Washington, Utah State, NMSU, SDSU, Wyoming (not so much but he’s been at Idaho State/Western Washington that have recruited Hawaii in the past and coming in as a great OC, he may look to the islands for some recruits), Tennessee….anyone else?

  12. warriornole Says:

    Dave,
What can you find out about Myles Wade (5-star JC DT) and UH’s recruiting efforts to sign him? He has expressed interest in Hawaii but has not received an offer. UH never receives any interest from 5-stars and it’d be a shame if they didn’t at least contact the kid.

  13. Manoa Mist Says:

I thought Mike Leach, the Texas Tech coach, was interviewing for Washington? He’d have to be the top choice, huh? Peterson would be another great choice. Pat Hill, well, if he couldn’t figure out that all he had to do to beat Hawaii was keep running the ball because we couldn’t stop the run, then he ain’t that smart a coach. Last point, have enjoyed watching Solly play LB the past four years. Doesn’t have to make the fantastic looking hit, he just brings guys down. A sure tackler. And he’s humble. Gotta love that.

  14. wes Says:

Off the subject a little…personally I would hate to see either Peterson or Hill leave. BSU and FSU are really the only two schools that appear to have a certain level of respect outside of the WAC. Especially since Boise won their BSU Bowl game in a very exciting fashion. I remember Oklahoma’s former head coach (the guy with BS for initials) say before the game…”no way could Boise run with the big dogs”. And as for FSU…well they have a very respectable record against BCS school. Since 2000, they have beaten 12 BCS conference teams, have more BCS wins than any other non-BCS school and have also been the only non-BCS school to win three consecutive bowl victories over BCS schools. They’ve beaten Kansas, Georgia Tech, Oregon State (the year OSU was preseason #1), Wisconsin…lost to Texax A&M in triple OT 47-45 and to USC 50-42 the year USC played in the BSC Championship Game. As a conference we need to hope that they continue to maintain that perception/standing for the betterment of the conference.
