New Wahine commit?
By Cindy Luis
thank you for the link. Just catching up on a few things.
First, appreciate all the kind thoughts regarding my mom. She is getting better but still has a long road to travel back to wellness. The nice thing is my sister-in-law has been an angel for the past few months and mom has been in good hands in the rehab facility.
Now about the commit. Kalei Greeley’s club … Rancho Valley, has posted that she has committed to UH for Fall 2014. She was the CIF Div 2AA Player of the Year as a junior at King High in Riverside.
RVVC is in San Bernardino.
She is a 6-3-ish middle turned opposite. very athletic from what I’ve read.
In the state final in November she led the team to the championship with 29 kills and 23 digs in the final.
not sure of the Hawaii connection with her name. perhaps someone knows. Her folks played Basketball at UC Riverside (dad both at UCR and USC).

Volleyshots

I looked online and it appears that King lost the state division II championship final this past november.
According to the LA Times King won on Nov. 17, defeating Los Osos.

I believe that was the state regional final, then they later went on to play for the state championships.
Never mind.. that was the CIF southern section title, they later played Archbishop Mitty for the CIF Division 2 state title in December.
Happened to find the full match of the King vs Los Osos CIF-SS finals where she had the 29 kills and 23 digs.

Thanks for the correction. I was going off what I thought was the title match.
She is even better than I thought. hits hard and smart, and passes and plays defense like she’s been an outside hitter all her life, very exciting that she’s new to the position and has room to grow.
December 1, 2012 result:
SET SCORES 1 2 3
Archbishop Mitty (3) 25 25 25
Martin Luther King (0) 19 22 18
Team Records:
38-0
29-8
I think we scored a real gem here. Good all around player. Hope we start hearing about more committing soon….Thanks Cindy!
Thank one of the other bloggers who posted. just followed their link.
Kalei Greeley has some smart coaching in high school. The coach saw a potential, as Hartong with Shoji, to convert her to a OH from a middle from her soph year, knowing that great success in D1 is being a 6 rotation player. Her stats shows she is accomplishing that with her dig numbers. Now if the coaches can sign up a couple more Hartongish gals in November 2013 UH should be in great shape in the aftermath of all the girls graduating in 2014.
Hopefully Taylor Agost the high leaping middle and Brooke McDermott the all around outside are next.
I hope Hawaii gets both of them. I just saw a video on McDermott and she has great lateral movement, speed, and is really athletic. She would be a nice addition to the Wahine.
If Hawaii lands Agost, McDermott, and Greeley then we will have three 6’0-6’3 players that can play outside or middle. I only know about Greeley playing back row but Agost has a nice float serve. Also hope Jade’s sister comes as well.
Greeley is impressive in the backrow go watch the video of her high school team, posted by “yay”. I think I am more impressed than her as a junior than I was when I watched Croson as a junior…
I really like Mcdermott too, she reminds me a bit of Jordan Burgess and not just because they are both from Florida.
I want to add Greeley also looks taller than 6′ 2.
She could pass for Jennifer Hamson’s younger sister.
I don’t see the resemblance with Hamson.
I do.
It’s also really annoying that they made Taylor Crabbe look like a Player of the year. The blocking is just so bad.
Got news for ya, Warriofan, Taylor Crabb *IS* that good. Go read his profile on LB’s website – started as a true freshman, registered multiple double-digit kill matches AND a double-double against Stanford that year. Made the all-freshman MPSF team as well as honorable mention MPSF. He also made the MPSF all-tourney team as a freshman.
As a sophomore he was a Volleyball Magazine All-American third team and MPSF second team.
You also might want to ask the guy who talked smack to him at the Aloha games a few summers just how good Taylor is. What a shame UH couldn’t have landed him.
BTW i am soo happy san diego state and Boise backed out of the big west, now the wahine can schedule teams that can help the rpi… get those sec, big east and acc teams out here.
Good news regarding your Mom, hope she only gets better.
As for new commit, from her name to her size, she seems like a fit for Coach Dave and Wahine team. I will hope she rises her game to help fill the Wahine’s Concept/needs and enjoys her time here as so many before her have. Welcome to Volleyball Paradise – Hawaiian Style, Kalei! And of course, Go Wahine!
Tayler Higgins is 2012 Mizuno/Volleyball Girls’ High School All-American Second Team

This is certainly stupendous news – what a great recruit!!! Excited for fall 2013 and for the upcoming new recruits.
What happened to that girl from Aotearoa? Is she not in the mix now? Did she commit to Minnesota?
She is a 2013 recruit and UH doesn’t have a scholarship for her I think.
Change of subject but three Hawaii girls made the Mizuno All American Volleyball team. Carly Kan, 1st team; Tayler Higgins, 2nd team; and Pomai Recca, 3rd team. Congratulations to all!
The Warriors let another one get away. They lose 3-2 and 16-14 in the fifth but they also had a match point.
Ugh they completely blew set 2 as well, they were up by like 8-9 points. and ended losing it 25-23…
Great game by Davis Holt and Nick West but Marks goes back to hitting in the zeros.. Olsen hasn’t been hitting good either.
Down big time in the first set…Maybe Charlie Wade should consider starting Timmerf instead of Marks…
Beach hitting .769; UH hitting .000…
Beach wins Set 1, 25-14. UH hit .040, Beach hit .591…Pretty much says it all…
UH was ahead 17-16, lost it 25-18…
So now that Boise & SDSU are staying in the MWC, does that mean Dave is gonna schedule 4 more OOC games to fill the void?
Yep.
believe that the original scheduled only included SDSU.the only thing this would do would be 2 more games, which allows you 3 3-team tournaments and 1 extra match.
UH down 22-16 in the third…
Getting swept by Long Beach in a series for the second straight year is not okay!
Agree…Maybe they can beat Pepp next week…They’ve always played pretty well against the Waves…
Fire Wade already enough is enough .
Gibson Arnold needs to be let go as well, hire coaches that can win.
Jim Donovan didn’t exhibit the best judgement during his reign at UH, did he?
If Wade doesn’t have a good season, I have a feeling that this might be his last year at head coach…I hope he can turn things around…
he has one more year left in the contract but at just 100 K I could see UH buying it out. I hope they consider current MPSF coaches only. Last time they clearly should have hired the UCSD coach or Sealy.
warrirofan,
I don’t think Kevin Ring wanted to leave UCSD at the time or even now.
honestly thought it should have gone to Scott Wong (was the top assistant with Pepperdine Men at the time) before he was hired by Shoji.
agreed Charlie needs to start winning and yes he has 1 more year after this season is done on his contract.
two tough matches with No. 2 Pepperdine (did beat Stanford in 4 last night) this Friday and Sunday
Heard that Hagins is no longer on the team or at UH.Anyone else hear the same?
That would be disappointing. She pushed the middles for playing time and I could actually see her starting over Kalei with a spring session under her belt while Kalei is playing basketball.
Im okay with her leaving… if true
I saw this coming from last season. She played okay but won’t beat out Kalei and Jade for playing time. Wonder if TK is playing her redshirt senior year as a grad student, or leave like Hewitt?
If this is true, would they try and get a new middle or would they try to train Nikki Taylor in the middle since she has had past experience? Looking at the rosters from the previous seasons, Hawaii has had 4-6 players that could play middle or had middle experience.
Looks true according to her twitter. I am not even sure if she was on scholarship though.
She wasn’t.
Sorry to see her go. I belive if she had more playing time she would have worked out.
Agost is playing in a MLK club tournament at the University of Oregon this weekend. She said that she is interested in Oregon but I’m wondering if they’re interested in her.
Who wouldn’t be interested in a player with her leaping ability??
In an interview with her, they asked her if she was a Duck (Oregon) or Beaver (Oregon State) and she said she was a duck her whole life but that wouldn’t play a role in her recruiting but she did say she was being recruited by both of them.
I read somewhere her final three is UH, Oregon and Pepperdine.
The banquet is tomorrow and sometimes we hear some new stuff.
We won’t hear anything about recruits obviously but we might hear about additional teams on the schedule.
Hope someone that goes to the banquet can fills us in.
I cold be wrong but doesn’t Ann Miller usually go to the banquet and follow it up with an article ?
Manny, if Ann or I go, we do do an article. I just got in from Seattle so missed the banquet. Ann was on the Big Island for golf. Not sure if she made it.
New AVCA poll is out…BYU unanimous #1…UH not even among “others receiving votes”…sad.
I went to the banquet and Dave said the first game of the season will be Texas and Ann was there had a great time
Tough way to open the season
I think it is a great way to start. Win or lose, things only get better as they play out the season. And RPI playing top team only is helped by opponents rating. This also means the Wahine will not have the luxury of playing a ‘patsy’ to start their season, they will have to take game one seriously and prep accordingly which means ‘no messing with lineups, no revolving subs. Coach Dave is on top of things and I’m positive he understands the importance and weight of this start to Hawai’i's standing in other coaches minds. So if you meet a Giant on the road, you’ve got to slay that giant with your weapons, guile and be brave and don’t back down or give up or roll over and play ‘opposum’. And from what I’ve seen of the core of this Wahine roster, I expect nothing less than a battle from them. Can hardly wait for season to start already! Go Wahine!!!!
I’m with you, great way to start the season. The complete opposite to last season with Albany. Win or lose the Texas match, the RPI doesn’t look at if you lost by 25-0 three sets in a row, but who you played and their winning records. I expect Texas to have a huge season this year, better than last. Texas will have their hands full with UH and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if UH wins. Remember Stanford last year? The three OC16 commentators called it wrong, OPPS!
Playing NMS will drag down any gains made by playing Texas
NMS had a pathic RPI last year and the new WAC this year is loaded with crappy teams.
I am very aware of NMSU when I stated about Texas, but imagine if UH was playing Albany or Idaho instead as the first match. I guess Shoji kinda giving Jordan a last wish from the 2011 season before he retires. I don’t expect to see NMSU here again in the future.
$300 headsets for winning the Conference ? Oh well they seem excited about their gift ,,
One player tweets.. better than a bracelet.
Hagins not happy about not getting her Beats by Dre.
I know she left here but will she be playing somewhere else ?
Is she the one that left the team?
Yep.She’s the one but I don’t know the reason why and don’t really care.
VT is saying hagins got her release and is playing at Idaho?
Realizing that she would be playing behind Adolpho & Vorster, she had to transfer if she wanted any playing time in her career.
I disagree. Her leaving had to do with her relationship with a guy.a football player at Washington State.
Not being able to return to Washington State Idaho, which is just down the road, makes sense,if that rumor is true.
