Nielsen’s teammate Powell to join Warriors

By Dave Reardon

Deondre Powell, who caught 73 passes for 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns last year, has committed to Hawaii, according to Doris Sullivan.

Powell is the Gahr High School (Cerritos, Calif.) teammate of quarterback Corey Nielsen, who committed to the Warriors last month. They graduate in the spring and likely join UH next fall.

Powell is listed as 5-feet-8 and 160 pounds. Sounds like slotback size for the run-and-shoot.

I like the potential and the fact the coaching staff is getting some early commitments, the earliest that I know in a long time. We have to keep up w/ the other colleges. Even SMU has given a lot of early verbal commitments. The size doesn’t bother me. The main thing is that these guys can play at the Division IA level and maybe be potential NFL caliber type player. If we want to get to the next level the talent level has to match.
