Primary secondary concerns … APR coming up
By Dave Reardon
UH safeties Erik Robinson, Viliami Nauahi and Le’Marcus Gibson won’t participate in spring practice, defensive backs coach Rich Miano said today.
Gibson is still rehabbing from knee surgery, and Robinson (shoulder) and Nauahi (arm) are also dealing with injuries. All are expected to be ready for fall camp to challenge returning starters Keao Monteilh and Desmond Thomas for playing time.
Although the suspension of corner Keenan Jones is disappointing, Miano said he is excited about Oregon transfer Jameel Dowling, as well as Calvin Roberts. They will have plenty of opportunities to compete with Ryan Mouton and JoPierre Davis, who will get the first looks.

Remember the APR scores? You probably want to forget about them if you’re a UH fan, since the Warriors lost five football scholarships two years ago and one last year because of the APR, which is linked to graduation rates and other factors. This year’s scores will be announced April 24 and May 6. Associate AD Carl Clapp said he is optimistic UH is improving in this area, although he said today he didn’t know if any scholarships would be lost.

Too bad the 3 safeties won’t be participating. Hope they’re fully heal by this Summer.
Gosh, I hope da UH doesn’t lose anymore scholarships. This APR think sucks…along with Miles Brand and the NCAA.
I don’t really understand how this APR thing works, but it’s got to hurt UH when Bess and Grice-Mullins decided to leave after their junior year.
Lack of healthy bodies in the secondary should also be a concern. Heal up boys and hope the incoming group catch on quickly and can contribute this year.
About APR rankings/graduation rates…happy to know/share that when Coach Mac was asked yesterday if he had three wishes what would he wish for…one of top three was “that all our players graduate.” Of course wishing and making it happen are two very different things. However at least it is in the crosshair of his radar screen. There is no doubt in my mind that he & staff will be doing much more than wishing over the next 5 years, as Coach has done all the right things thus far!
I agree with you, Wes. Coach Mack seems to be the type that leaves nothing to chance. He obviously runs a tight ship and “housekeeping duties aren’t going to be allowed to slide. I’m confident the tight discipline and keen attention to detail will translate into a very efficient team in this upcoming season and we’ll need exactly that to pull-out the upset of the New year in the Swamp!
What was the last UH academic progress rate (apr)? Is the NCAA cutoff still at 925?
thanks

In all athletic departments the athletic director’s job is overseeing the APR and graduation rates. For the UH there’s been an absence in the past of the former football coach and the former AD working together in achieving better numbers.
Coach Wagner’s teams,in his seven year tenure as coach, achieved a graduation ranking of 7th nationally with a 74% graduation rate. And who was the AD-Stan Sheriff.
When I googled athletic programs around the country having good graduation rates a lot of the praise goes to the athletic directors. Boise State from the WAC has been ranked near the top 2 out of the last 4 years, and the AD’s resume reflects this distinction.
Looking back at who we’ve had for athletic directors after Stan Sheriff would be too easy to see why the APR and graduation numbers are down.Although it’s embarrassing for the UH having non conforming journalists writing in detail during the year, especially the year we lost 5 scholarships,of how irresponsible either the coach or athletic director was would have been in the best interest of the program.
DR,
Wanted to say that I got a chance to see the scout game last season and there was one player that stood out in the secondary. The dude was fast, tall and could lay some hat. We found out that guy was Jameel Dowling–a transfer from Oregon. He played at Oregon but got injured and then transferred to Hawaii (OU wanted him to play last year but he wanted to talk a year off to rehab from what I understand). I look forward to see how he does but too bad he has only 1 more year of eligibility.
GO WARRIORS
PS Congrats to D. Low for an awesome career at WSU.
Dave, I just saw the spring roster. I noticed there is no punter and only Kelly as the kicker. We don’t need a punter? Ha, Ha. What’s the scoop according to Coach Mack. Are we getting walk-on punter(s) in the fall. Hey, we all know we need to have a good punter. Kurt Milne was descent, but I wasn’t too impressed with him and he was not consistent and his inside the 20 ratio wasn’t too good. I noticed, under Jones, the punters did not angle it to the corner a lot (preventing a return). Will the new coaching staff philosophy be different in this area. I already know that UH will go after more blocks depending on the situation and I like that. June Jones did not want to block kicks. I think he was too stubborn and too arrogant in just wanting the ball. He didn’t know that changing it up somethings is a good thing to keep the opponent honest and sometimes guessing.
I like Coach MacMakin w/ his can do mentality and seems like the team will be trying to do a lot of things and more variety. I’m excited for the new season and will be going too a practice soon w/ my friend, Ronny Bob. By the way, who’s is Quentin Beaver? What are his measurables, class, etc.? Thanks for all that you do for us.
Tim Grasso is still the punter. He’ll be back in the fall, but he’s not at UH this spring.
Beaver is 6-1 and around 350. He’s a beast with the weights.
