Chauncey Makainai, a 6-4, 315-pound offensive lineman who graduates from Kailua next spring, was offered a scholarship by UH today, according to two sources. We are trying to confirm another offer to a local stud lineman.

I leave tonight for the WAC Football Media Preview. Greg McMackin, Solomon Elimimian and Adam Leonard represent the Warriors.
I voted for Leonard as the preseason defensive player of the year in a very close call over Elimimian and New Mexico State quarterback Chase Holbrook as offensive player of the year.
Will fill you in on my predicted order of team finish later.

Just got off the phone with offensive tackle Kainoa LaCount. He said he has one more summer school class to complete in order to earn his associate’s degree at College of the Canyons (Calif.).
“I hope to be able to be ready to jump into camp Aug. 7,” he said.
Fall camp starts Aug. 4.
Although he has prototype size and talent, LaCount may end up redshirting this season. Especially on the offensive line, it can be difficult to quickly become a productive player without plenty of repetition and bonding with teammates in the offseason.

Tread lightly Dave. When the donkey fans find out you voted Holbrooks over Ian Johnson they gonna be calling for your blood! Travel safe brah.
Ian Johnson is an awesome player and very interesting and gracious person. But I don’t know if he’ll be as productive this season as previous years behind a rebuilding offensive line.
Give credit to Boise…I can’t remember when they had a losing season. Their players and coaches are something special and the only way Hawaii wins is to bring their “A+” game to the Big Dance. For that matter, anything less in the WAC Conference is a disaster. This year everyone is gunning for Hawaii. Let’s see what we got against Florida, that one game might dictate how the entire seasons unfolds. Aloha.
thanks for the update dave.
Dave,
It’s July 21 and Kainoa still has to make up a summer school class? That’s not good news and your comment that he is a likely redshirt if he makes it on August 7 is spot on. Probably take till October to get him through the NCAA clearing house based on prior years anyway.
Have a safe journey to the WAC meetings and get us some scoops!
Go Warriors!
Holbrook will have stats, but his team won’t be in the upper echelon of the conference. The Nevada QB might be a sleeper, but I’ll go on a limb with either Funaki or Grauke, whoever wins the job. The Warriors will win the WAC, bank on it. Defense wins championships and limiting turnovers will be another key. Leonard for defensive player of the year and Ryan Mouton as special teams player of the year.
Sorry Dave, Though Chase is a decent QB, he could of flourished more with a better program.
My vote goes to Ian also. Though it’s a rebuilding program, and he might not see the amount of ball handling reps like the ‘06 season, he is still “The Man” with the WAC RB’s.
(Shhh. But our guys are a hidden secret)
WARRIORS WAC CHAMPS! ‘07 and ‘08 !
Dave - This might be a sign that you’re slipping. I too picked Adam and Chase!
-Chris Hart (Thanx 4 coming on the show today)
Oh oh. I don’t now if “Great minds think alike” applies here.
You’re welcome. Thanks for having me on your show. There will be more to talk about today and tomorrow.
Congrats to Sol. Hope he has his best year ever! …starting with Florida.
