Post-selection show comments from Shoji, Hartong

November 25th, 2012
By

Overall, the team was pretty shocked. Shoji took them into the locker room to talk it over and discuss potential travel plans.

From Shoji:

Obviously we’re disappointed. We feel we deserved a seed but we just have to move on and get ready to leave. I  understand the ommittee’s reluctance to send three teams here but it was doable. They did it last year.

Once you get into the tournament  there are not many walkovers. Every at-large team is tough.

(Asked him about Nebraska since they struggled against the Huskers in spring)

Nebraska struggled  this season. They are No. 4 but they aren’t a hot team. They’re still really good. We just went to get there (Omaha)

(On going to UW, where they lost in the second round 2 years ago)

We know how tough it is to play there. We know how tough Washington is.

We can’t dwell on where we should have or would have been. We just move on and get ready to play Santa Clara.

Obviously the committee didn’t see fit to travel three teams here. I don’t know if they made money but they. certainly hung their hat on the increase in attendance for the tournament last year. That was because of us (hosting first and second round).

I’d like to be inside that room  and see how things came about.. It’s not a transparent process

(on not being home this week)

Travel is hard but we’ve done it before. It’s very taxing. If we win, then it’s another week traveling. win and it’s another week. We’d like to be in that position to be on the road that long but it’s still tough.

(On the WCC getting six teams in)

It was looking like they’d get five coming into today and they snuck a sixth in. That’s good news for mid-majors. It’s encouraging and I envision that the Big West will be like that next year. Everyone is going to be better.

From Hartong
We thought we were deserving but it is what it is.

(on playing at UW; she was a freshman last time).

I remember it as a small gym and packed with their fans.

(On possible matchup with Nebraska in the regional)

We saw them in spring and most of us were training for beach, didn’t have a lot of indoor reps. I think we’ve improved a lot since them. We have a young team and I have a good feeling going into the tournament. It was nice going undefeated in conference and we’re excited to start the tournament.

(On how close the team is, giving the work they put into Maeda’s senior night)

We love Em. She’s the heart of the team. The team is very close and we all are ready to do our best.

Great recap here Cindy, thank you!

Agree with Beauston. There are some journalism things our fearless leader is very good at. This is one of those things.

  • GL November 25, 2012 at 12:51 pm

all we can do is move forward. First up ….. santa clara

  • Warrior-15 November 25, 2012 at 12:53 pm

    thanks for the feedback, Cindy…

Hawaii can use this snub as tremendous motivation! I’d like to see Hawaii fight their way to a FF appearance as an unseeded team!

It’ll be tough, but we gotta believe!

    :)

  • dedicatedfan November 25, 2012 at 12:59 pm

The girls need to use this snub as fuel for not only this tournament, but for next year, too. Do not take a play, set, or match off. Do Not leave it in the hands of the Tournament Selection Committee, next year. Have it in your hands, from the start of the season to the end of it.

    • volleyball fan November 25, 2012 at 1:39 pm

I totally agree with you, dedicatedfan. Next year this team will have to fight hard to win every match and earn a higher than 16th seed, maybe one of the top eight. Also, there is one regional location still left to be determined next year. Dave Shoji should bid for it – especially if Hawaii can beat Santa Clara and upset Washington. I suppose the NCAA is waiting to see who will make the regional this year who isn’t hosting one next year.

      • ladida November 25, 2012 at 2:37 pm

I have 2013 Regionals as USC, Kentucky, Florida, and Illinois. Of these four who isn’t hosting.

        • ladida November 25, 2012 at 3:19 pm

          Has Florida pulled out?

          • volleyball fan November 25, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Ladida, I just looked at the NCAA website and here is what they wrote for 2013
            • Host: Galen Center, University of Southern California
            • Host: Memorial Coliseum, University of Kentucky
            • Host: Assembly Hall, University of Illinois, Champaign
            • Host: TBD

So Florida isn’t mentioned here. Where did you get your information from?

  • StuffU November 25, 2012 at 2:22 pm

Correction to the article on StarAdvertiser -

The top 16 seeds are guaranteed hosting. It was never the rule that the Top 16 in RPI would be seeded.

On Shoji’s thoughts regarding the WCC ~ The WCC got a sixth team in because there were SOOOO many west coast seeds this year. The committee took everybody on the West Coast that they could justify, otherwise it was a 5 team deep league.

On Shoji’s thoughts regarding the Big West ~ I’m not sold that the Big West will ever be more than a two bid conference again. In order to get selected, Big West teams need to play more pre-season matches against East Coast RPI boosting teams …AND WIN. However, budget constraints are tough right now for all California State schools (virtually the entire Big West), especially those without football dollars. It is highly unlikely that these Big West schools will get more funding for east coast pre-season travel hence the problem of playing WCC and Pac-12 opponents in the preseason further killing their W-L record and RPI.

Lastly, my thoughts on the Big West – The move to the Big West has not improved things on the surface for Hawaii volleyball, and I’m not sure it will. It certainly has not been an RPI booster. When they were in the WAC and seeded and hosting, they could count on seeing a BigWest team, a mid-level WCC team, and a mid-level Pac-10 team in their sub-regional due to geographic pods. Now they can no longer have BigWest teams in their pod. The lone WAC rep (for as long as that conference survives) will now get eaten up by a Texas host, leaving only the WCC and the Pac12 to choose from. Expect Hawaii to have a regular date with USC or Washington in the 1st/2nd rounds every year, and likely on the road since it will always be easier to “minimize flights” by keeping Hawaii unseeded and sending them to the west coast.

  • StuffU November 25, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Lastly, Shoji needs to take some lessons from the Florida State coaching team on how to game the RPI. They have shown, for the last several years, that they have figured out how to schedule to create the best opportunity for a high RPI.

I thought Shoji figured it out when last years pre-season schedule was posted. Lots of east coast/mid west conference champion contenders with one Pac-12 and one Big 10. That is an RPI boosting schedule.

You are not going to beef up your RPI by playing 3 Pac-12 schools and two WCC out of your 9 tournament matches. Pac-12 and WCC regulary beat up on each other in conference and you can expect those teams to have at least 4-6 losses in conference. You want teams on your schedule that are going to lose only 1 maybe 2 matches in conference, this is how you boost RPI …where are those teams? On the East Coast in the Colonial American Conference, Mid-Atlantic Conference, etc. Are these exciting matches for the fans? Probably not, but I wish the coaches would spend more time bringing over these types of teams for the pre-season tourneys.

    • RYK November 25, 2012 at 3:08 pm

That’s easier said than done. Not many eastern teams not from BCS conferences can afford to travel to Hawaii. Albany was a bit of an exception this year. Really the problem wasn’t the preseason schedule. They had a very high RPI of about 12 after the preseason it was only playing the Big West teams that brought the RPI down.

The Big West just needs to get better and not have so many of those 100+ RPI teams. The addition of Boise State next year will not help. If the Big West goes to 20 conference games next season with the addition of Boise and SDSU then Hawaii may be forced to drop a preseason tournament.

      • StuffU November 25, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Not true. The W-L records for each team you play becomes 50% of your RPI. That means all those teams we played in the preaseason continue to affect Hawaii’s RPI throughout the season. Sure the Big West teams brought down the RPI, but we cannot change the teams Hawaii plays in conference, we can change the teams we play out of conference. Those out of conference matches need to be against teams that are expected to win their conference regularly …they will generally have a very good W-L record and positively affect your RPI as the season progresses, Hawaii did not have that luxury this year.

      • StuffU November 25, 2012 at 4:56 pm

Perhaps Hawaii needs to consider subsidizing the costs of flying those East Coast teams to Hawaii tourneys and consider it an investment in the program’s post-season success. They are running a net profit every year, why not put a little of that back into the program where it will help them get deeper into the tourney?

        • Cindy Luis November 25, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Subsidizing travel is part of the bid process.

          • StuffU November 25, 2012 at 8:35 pm

You realize we are discussing Hawaii’s pre-season tourneys?

        • Mike November 25, 2012 at 11:45 pm

You realize the UH v-ball program is on a strict budget? No you really believe Shoji can afford to bring all those east coast teams over? Money doesn’t grow on trees, especially for the minor sports.

          • Cindy Luis November 26, 2012 at 8:14 am

And it doesn’t mean Shoji hasn’t invited some of the better RPI teams here. The opponents also have budget restrictions. Some schools have travel restrictions as well. Only allowed to miss school so many days. It’s why UCLA comes out every year early. They don’t go back to school until mid-September.

    • Orbitalripz November 25, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Not my comment. It’s coming from the hater who uses my handle. Check IP address.

    • Cindy Luis November 25, 2012 at 6:06 pm

Not sure what you’re saying. That Sunahara is the next UH coach? I wouldn’t bet on that.
Shoji will retire when he wants to.

      • poke November 25, 2012 at 9:30 pm

just for fun, who would be in the running for Shoji’s position once he retires?

        • Cindy Luis November 25, 2012 at 11:10 pm

Just for fun. Sealy, … Tita Ahuna might have been a good pick a while back but she’s been out of the collegiate scene.

          • runaround5 November 25, 2012 at 11:58 pm

Sealy no, but just for fun Wade has the inside track before Sealy. who I think won’t leave UCLA for UH. I would prefer someone else besides Wade if I do some researching. Why not Sealy you ask, well when Wade was hired as the men’s coach you go figure it out.

          • Cindy Luis November 26, 2012 at 8:12 am

Never saw Wade as having the inside track before Sealy. Sealy didn’t really want the men’s job but, as he said, you have to apply for head jobs whenever they open.

          • roofer68 November 26, 2012 at 9:26 am

Wade no. It will serve Hawaii well if the next head coach would be one who has played the game and have ties with Hawaii.

          • Viva la Portugal November 26, 2012 at 8:06 am

Sealy’s NOT going anywhere other than moving from Santa Monica to Vanise.

Wade will be lucky to have a job after this 2013 MVB season.

          • Cindy Luis November 26, 2012 at 8:08 am

            Did you mean Van Nuys?
as I said. it was just for fun.
            and agree about Wade

    • Cindy Luis November 25, 2012 at 6:22 pm

Disagree with the RPI statement. The RPI has become inherently biased towards BCS conferences. All FSU needs to do is play well in its conference because the conference rating is so high.

      • StuffU November 25, 2012 at 8:47 pm

The RPI is not biased in favor or BCS conferences; prime example was 2011 Pac-10 which was grossly underrated by RPI.

RPI has been shown to have a bias towards East Coast teams, which is why the SEC generallly garners favor by RPI. The bias is based on the teams that are generally available to play nearby. On the West Coast, teams with high W-L records may be Stanford, Hawaii, and first place WCC and MWC teams. So teams on the West Coast have few options to choose from. On the East Coast, there are MANY small conferences with conference champions with great W-L records but are generally easier to beat. So the teams in the SEC can schedule Albany, Long Island, etc that give them a big W-L record AND are unlikely to beat them. Whereas, teams on the West Coast would have to play a Stanford, Hawaii or San Diego to get a similar boost, a much harder matchup and not many to choose from.

Hawaii can game the RPI, Florida State’s coach worked HARD to come up with the proper scheduling and he has generated results. The conference as a whole will generally have a sum zero effect on one team’s RPI because every match will have 1 winner and 1 loser giving the net effect of zero. It is the non-conference part of their schedules that defines increases or decreases in the RPI. They have high W-L records because they play against these smaller conference champions, which are beatable teams, and come into the conference with good records.

      • Warrior-15 November 26, 2012 at 10:47 am

i also disagree that there is a “BCS” bias in the RPI. it’s not a BCS bias. it’s a regional bias, that allows teams from the east and midwest to more easily schedule teams that can boost their RPI. there are more teams out in the east and midwest, so there are a greater number of opportunities to schedule teams with (inflated) win-loss records.

there will, of course, be overlap between the BCS schools and the regional biases in the RPI.

but the Missouri Valley Conference consistently gets about 3-4 teams into the tournament every year. (these are teams like UNI, Wichita St, Missouri St, and now Creighton won that conference this year). the MVC is not BCS.

the WCC — again not a BCS conference by any stretch — got 6 teams into the tournament this year, based on an improved RPI for teams in that conference. for the past few years, the WCC has only gotten 1 (maybe 2) teams in. but not this year. a lot of the WCC teams got smart this year and scheduled teams from the east and midwest for their nonconference schedule.

the regional bias shows that the RPI can be “gamed” if you schedule right, by playing teams from different regions.

if it were just a “BCS” bias … then you wouldn’t be able to “game” RPI. think about it … you are either a school that belongs to a BCS conference or not. no amount of creative scheduling can get around that.

  • dedicatedfan November 25, 2012 at 2:34 pm

I am quite sure Hartong will not let what happened the last time they played there happen again. Along with Maeda, Goodman, and Uiato, they were there also.

    • warriorfan November 25, 2012 at 3:41 pm

Hartong will show everyone she is better than Vansant.

      • Cindy Luis November 25, 2012 at 6:09 pm

Don’t think you can compare 2010 to this year. both teams are very different from two years ago.

  • Jeff November 25, 2012 at 4:09 pm

They always choke and NCAA knows that.

    • Cindy Luis November 25, 2012 at 6:08 pm

Jeff, harding consider UH ‘always choking.’ they have often been beaten by a higher seed.

  • Grammy November 25, 2012 at 4:23 pm

I wouldn’t put it all on Emily, but rather look for a balanced offense with most probably Hartong and Vorster and Croson getting their kills and Adolpho and Olevao or Kastl or Goodman getting in on the action. I think we’ll be seeing the double subs earlier in the sets than we’re used to or later as Coach Dave has been playing it lately. I think Tuaniga and Haggins will be used to get bigger blocking at strategic points and will also provide unexpected offense while in there. A total team effort on floor defense and serve receive is a must to be able to stay in system which means Aly and Em will be flying all over the backrow and behind the block, too to pick up dinks. And we have all seen this kind of play from this team so I for one expect them to be able to do it now. I think they can get through this regional but might have a harder time with the round of 16. It is hard but it isn’t out of the question. The round of 8 and above will be very hard after two weeks on the road, etc. But I believe they will find their true level out of this and they will be better for the experience, “It is” as Emily said, “what it is.” Now there is only action left, words, whining and dashed hopes are done, time to step up. Go Wahine!

  • StuffU November 25, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Hawaii winning against Washington will be determined by how many kills the non-Hartong, non-Croson players get. Washington has, arguably, the best block in the NCAA against a team’s left side hitter. Since the large majority of sets will go to Croson and Hartong on the left pin, their efficiency will take a dive. The success will come if Hawaii gets kill production from the other players. If not, Hawaii goes down in flames.

    • warriorfan November 25, 2012 at 6:39 pm

If Asu can beat them, I know UH can as well. Granted no Vansant against ASU. UH must pass well!!!! Longo, Croson, Maeda and Hartong need to be on their passing A game.

  • Bud November 25, 2012 at 7:04 pm

And again, Penn State gets a cup cake walk into the FF.

  • ashley November 25, 2012 at 8:41 pm

hey remember Jane? yes, love hartong a lot, & i am sure she will not disappoint. but seeing we get passed Santa Clara, i am dying to see what damage Jane does to Washington. Jane for some reason performs WELL against Pac12 teams. did it against SC last year, & again to Stanford this year, so i am interested to see if she’ll come out firing like she did before.

but all in all, i feel sorry for Hawaii. screwed over once again, but suck it up ladies. i have faith in you all, and whatever happens, happens. its been a great season, great to return to the BWC undefeated. lots to be thankful for this season…

  • Jesse November 26, 2012 at 9:10 am

I always saw Jason watson as someone that would apply when shoji retires and deitre of course.

    • Cindy Luis November 26, 2012 at 9:15 am

I’m sure many will apply when he retires. and there will be a lot of good candidates.

  • Hot November 26, 2012 at 11:54 pm

Cindy, is Shoji taking 15 players? If so, I think it will be:
    Emily Hartong
    Jane Croson
    Mita Uiato
    Emily Maeda
    Jade Vorster
    Kalei Adolpho
    Kaela Goodman
    Ali Longo
    Kristiana Tuaniga
    Stephanie Hagins
    Ashley Kastl
    Monica Stauber
    Ginger Long
    Tai Manu-Olevao
    Courtney Lelepali

    • Cindy Luis November 27, 2012 at 7:38 am

Haven’t see the travel roster. Did ask UH. Only thing I was told is the SID and SWA are going. And it didn’t sound like all 17 who have played were going. guessing Kawamura and maybe Kam don’t go.
. so, yes, Hot, your list looks good.
Travel party is 22 maximum. you have four coaches and a trainer. with the SID and SWA going looks like room for 15 players.
