first a big mahalo to UH sid Paka Bello, who let me borrow his password so i could us the wireless at the arena. we are on a four-week access and it ran out after Friday’s match.

As for Ferrell, she was not cleared to play this weekend. Percentage wise, she is still eligible to request a medical hardship. since she has played, she cannot redshirt.

in case you didn’t catch the earlier post,

It is nice to see dani out there earlier than the waning moments. they need two competent setters and dani gives them a different look. dani was considered the better blocker early on but stephanie has really improved. what i think people forget is how great a blocker kanoe was and she was really good at getting whoever was next to her to close the block. and she had great timing.
unfortunately for dave he has close to the same situation as kanoe-cayley, margaret-jen with two setters in the same class. it’s just worked out that way. i know he’d rather have it more staggered I.e. freshman-junior, sophomore-senior. (thanks for the catch. mind wasn’t thinking when saying brandt and mafua same class)

    • Mike October 29, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Staggered by a year at least, isn’t Mafua still a freshman and Brandt a soph. Seems like Brandt has good all around skills and presence in addition to quickness and anticipation in getting to errant passes. Haven’t seen enough of Mafua’s game yet. What do they mean when they say “soft hands”? Is it just the way the ball comes out of the setter’s hands, does it really matter to the hitter. I would think if the location is good and no spin on the ball then it doesn’t matter how it comes out. Is this just a nuance and a “points for style” thing? Also, Shoji mentioned that Mafua had too soft hands and Brandt not soft enough.

      • Cindy Luis October 30, 2007 at 7:58 am

soft hands exactly that. too bad there are no style points. it is subtle when it comes to touch. it doesn’t matter to the hitter as long as the ball gets there when expected, at the right tempo. not an easy thing to do. timing takes time to work on. which is why i think you see brandt and hitters being more successful as the season goes on.

        • pouncer84 October 30, 2007 at 3:24 pm

          I may be wrong, but I believe…

softer hands give you more control on the ball (take spin off). You can cradle the ball more. The stiffer the hands, more chances you can double contact the ball & add spin. Like when you spike the ball, some have no idea where the ball is going when they make contact. For example, look at Jessica Keefe when she gets the chance to set. Her hands are very stiff.

Our best setters all had soft hands. (Maggie, Robyn, Kanoe) I don’t remember Martina or Cheri’s hands.

  • Cindy Luis October 29, 2007 at 3:07 pm

as in the case of Robyn vs. Kari, i think robyn was clearly the better setter. it just took dave a while to come around to playing the younger player.
Margaret brought so much to the game it was hard to deny her playing time as well.

OBTW, the white team with Kanoe setting won the alumnae match something like 25-14, 25-22. they didn’t keep stats. Sarah Mason was on the green. i would have figured out how to keep her serving. but kanoe also had a number of aces, was told to quit picking on the ‘old’ people.

  • Cindy Luis October 29, 2007 at 3:12 pm

IMHO, dani has softer hands. but stephanie is quite the competitor out there. both connect well with hitters. thought the connection between brandt and sanders was good sunday. it really is amazing to watch the athleticism of a kaufman when she’s on my side of the net. and you can watch her hang time from behind on the stepouts.

We recently hired a new deputy sports editor who has no background in volleyball. just moved here from Rochester, N.Y., Last night was his second match sitting next to me. he became a fan the first night. his wife is still on the mainland. she’s not sure what to make of the conversion. sorry to out you, Steven. welcome to Hawaii. and wahine volleyball

  • Ralph October 29, 2007 at 11:23 pm

Mafua and vakasausau are athletes. Shoji’s trade mark is to make VB players out of them.. Both were not setters for very long. I believe Mafua set only her senior year at Mid Pac, Margaret was an all around athlete at UHS, including soccer. Learning setting techniques is one thing, the more difficult aspect is seeing the floor and reading the block to give your hitters the advantage, and that takes experience..Margaret had excellent outside hitters at the national tournament, but the other team with the better setter won…

  • Cindy Luis October 30, 2007 at 8:01 am

Stephanie wasn’t a setter until late in high school. and they ran a 6-2. she was a hitter until then. mafua and brandt come early to practice with Sealy, working on location and technique.
we’ll see what happens in recruiting wiith Kabalis. she would be perfect to redshirt next year. she is an amazing player. I know brandt was impressed when seeing her at the Ann Kang. but don’t know if Kaleinani can qualify. she’s had well-publicized academic problems.

    • rainbowfan October 30, 2007 at 4:22 pm

what position would Kabalis be recruited for?

  • RedZone October 30, 2007 at 3:36 pm

Cindy do you think Liz could set? She really puts up some nice balls.

  • Cindy Luis October 30, 2007 at 6:16 pm

think elizabeth was recruited for a libero and that’s where she’ll stay. she’s a good secondary option and she and aneli have quite a connection.

as for kabalis … she would be interesting addition at setter. great all-around player but short. still, great genes.

  • ACE October 31, 2007 at 9:00 pm

With all these “late setters”, why doesn’t shoji try and recruit a natural setter who’s been setting all through club/high school? Looking at some top teams, their setters were highly recruited setters (Kehoe, McGinnis).

    • lina November 1, 2007 at 12:36 am

if you’re referring to top setters ala kehoe, mcginnis, i’m sure coach shoji has gone hard after some of them, however as mentioned many times before, it’s just really difficult for him to land highly touted/recruited setters outside of Hawaii. He actually has done a respectable job in recruiting top setters in Kamanao, and Ah Mow a few years back. (Too bad he couldn’t land Berg though.)But all in all it’s mainly due to the difficulties in recruiting out-of-state top setters. Give him credit though for landing the ones that he could.

    • rainbowfan November 1, 2007 at 8:05 am

trying to recruit and actually landing one of them are totally different things. Shoji probably has tried to land a few natural setters in the past few years, but they all decided to go somewhere else. his next option is to develop a new, athletic setter (Mafua) or hope for a transfer (Brandt).

  • Cindy Luis November 1, 2007 at 9:23 am

You’re right. Dave has gone after “top” setters but didn’t get them. As for Berg, don’t believe she was recruited by UH, nor her sister Erin, who ended up at North Carolina. Berg played for Mike Hebert at Minnesota, a longtime friend of the Berg family going back to dad Dennis and Mike playing together at UCSB in the 60s.

  • fanatic November 6, 2007 at 1:30 pm

I think mafua has great hands…the thing I love about her is she can disguise her sets…if you see her front set to her back set her hands are primarily in the same position. I think the only problem might be that he sets stay in the air a little too long, but If she can work on that she’ll see a lot more time.
