not going to do a play-by-play but you are welcome to chime in.

Anteaters win Set 1 25-22
SC leading in Set 2 10-6
people have asked my thoughts. my guess was UCI.

Volleyshots

USC now leading 14-7 in Set 2
USC timeout but leading 17-14
Irvine takes a lead 19-18
How did UH let chris Austin get away??I know he was on the team a few years ago.
Don’t remember Chris Austin on UH’s radar.
He went to Uh his freshmen year but didnt make the volleyball team so he then went to a Junior college.
Which likely means he didn’t have the grades after the first semester. they’ll have like 40 guys in the fall and then drops to around 20-25 for spring.
That must have been it, too bad UH didn’t get him back after JC. I noticed Tsai mentioned some recruits were on their trip this past weekend, I hope a real good setter was one of them.
I meant he was in school at UH but not on the official team. My bad. His long beach city college bio also stated his previous school was hawaii.
UC Irvine takes an exciting Set 2: 34-32
USC is toast, they let set 2 slip away.
Anteaters win 34-32
Right now Hawaii players getting some action. Madison McKibben and Ben Lam in and made back to back points
USC now leads Set 3: 21-20
Congrats to Irvine, Im really jealous that they have 3 titles now, seems like just yesterday UH would blow them away all the time.
Anteaters win Set 3 26-24
Congrats to UC Irvine for the National Championship!
Congrats also to HBA for winning the DII State Championship
Solid match for UCI…Have they announced the site for next year’s championship?
Back in LA ( which makes no sense), but UCLA will be hosting at Pauley Pavilion.
I guess not too many choices in men’s volleyball…
I saw the all tournament team, NCAA championships. I don’t see any Hawai’i names for USC, including the Stanford players Brad Lawson & Shoji. Didn’t watch the game, saw it on gametracker and USC website. A surprise they didn’t include the names above, if you’re a Hawai’i fan. This include Micah for USC.
None of the hawaii players deserved to make all tournament. Micah didn’t have that great a final four but he’s just a freshmen, And the all tourney team is just made out of players that played in the final four.
Some great defense from both teams. Still would have liked to see Stanford in the finals…..next year!
UH needs to keep Evan Enriques, Micah Ma’a and Tuileta home. All three just sophomores and probably the best players in the state. 42 kills for Enriques, he’s a beast and very good in the backrow as well.
I was rooting for Kamehameha( big island) but Congrats to Punahou for another state title.
Ma’a is just a freshman but all of them would be too short for their positions. But I hope they stay
He’s soo good I forgot he is just a freshmen and they aren’t that short for being just 15-16 year olds they are all around 6′ 2 already, I expect they will each grow 2-3 more inches.
Evan Enriques might wear out his arm at the rate he is going.
Cindy, has the Maar kid from Canada signed and faxed his LOI yet?
Don’t know if the NLI is done. All I know is that he ‘accepted’ an offer from UH in January which leads me to believe the paperwork is in.
I hope Maar hasn’t changed his mind because of UH finishing last.
Well hopefully he realizes that if he comes to a last place team then he has a better chance of starting and possibly winning freshman of the year award!
He accepted the agreement in Jan., well before the last-place finish. think you’re getting way ahead of yourself about the FOY honors.
Per VT, he’s apparently de-committed. Hope it isn’t true.
This is what the Colorado State girls got for winning the MWC now that’s my idea of what a Championship ring should look like.
https://p.twimg.com/AsTaQauCMAAdFvd.jpg
In the middle is a volleyball.Seventeen diamonds representing 17 trips to the NCAA Tournament the 3 green jewels represent CSU’s 3 straight MWC titles.
very nice but sounds expensive.
Cindy is it true that the boosters club pays for rings or bracelets ? If it’s a money issue why not just put out the call like softball did a few years ago, fans responded in a big way.
Vinny, didn’t know there was an issue. Wasn’t this about what CSU got and not about UH?
Boosters donate but I don’t know if they cover the whole bill. Can tell you that for a number of years, much like the “only ncaa champions get banners’ that teams did not receive anything for winning the conference. I know that ’82 and ’83 ncaa champs got rings in the Hawaiian black enamel style. believe 87 did as well.
Watched K5′s rebroadcast of the UH-Stanford 1987 championship match…reminded me of how athletic that team was! Diana Jessie could hit almost as hard as Teee!
That surely was an awesome match. The energy that team had was astronomical. Suzanne Eagye especially. Jumping all around after most side-outs and points. They looked liked they really enjoyed playing with each other. And they did it with menehune OH’s; Eleneki (5’6) & Jessie (5’9). You ain’t gonna see that on any D1 team today.
Funny how EVERY MVB thread iminently turns into someway/form Wahine WVB discussion(s).
& so…
Let’s not forget about Aunty Kanakamaoli (up there on the Papakolea hill).
Mrs. Ahuna: “I’d like to thank everybody for awl dea support. Salt Lake people, mahalo for all your support. To every body at Salt Lake District Park, thank you for awl your kokua. And to everybody else…tank you for awwlllllll your support!”
Tita: “Yeah, I’d like to tank every body for awl dea support. And to the gang back home, I’d just like to say one more ting…DEA YOU GO!!! (laugh, laugh, laugh, ha, ha, ha, giggle, giggle, giggle) ”

Congrats to Irvine. They played a good match; Clark is THE man. He should’ve been AVCA POY, imo. I don’t get why there’s criticism of Micah either. He sets very well and his hitters were off timed/inconsistent in their own efforts. I thought that Christianson was pretty much spot on with his distributions (Wade lost a gem in him boy).
Eleneki match stats 7-0-25 .280
Jessie 13-8-52 .096
LO,
I said it once before…and I’ll say it again. YOU are the one responsible for UW’s successes in the late 80s. It may not have been while you were at the U-Dub, yourself, but as a result of the girls which you recruited Debbie Buse (and her staff) benefited from those girls out of OR especially. Beckenhauer’s transfer was all the more icing; Laurie Wetzel was clearly ‘Da Bomb’, also. I was pleasantly surprised when UW beat Stanford in the rd. of 16 (circa 1988)…I think that they then lost to UCLA in the Elite Eight, can’t really remember?!
The point is that those couple years, in the most latter 80s, UW was a top 15 team ’cause of you. Thanks for the memories.

About sand
Scott Wong along with Jane Croson of UH and other sand coaches and players from other schools featured on a 6 page spread on dig mag. The issue covered the inaugural season all the way to the championship. Issue will be out in stands soon.

glad men’s season is over i hope coach wade can bring some players too bad he has one hand tied cause no great ILH players ever will play for hawaii

I’ll bring it up, Katie Spieler signed an NLI last weekend and no announcement by UH. Why not? Let the fans know what’s up as events happen.
don’t think UH ever announces walk on athletes.
Walkons do not sign an NLI.
Spieler is an invited walk-on. no NLI was signed.
mauna probably misunderstood the headline on the Santa Barbara Presidio Sport that read “Eighteen Dos Pueblos Athletes Introduced At Signing Ceremony”. She was just introduced as with the intention of enrolling at UH. Her teamate Amanda Moriarty did sign an NLI to play for HPU.
Someone on Volleytalk posted that Stephanie Hagins (6’4 Sophomore Middle) is transferring to Hawaii from Washington State
If I remember correctly in another thread on this blog about transfers where Cindy talked to Shoji, it was said there was 2 transfers… Cindy also said from another source that the two are mostly likely the ones having already being mentioned. Kastl and Longo.
Found the thread…
http://blogs.starbulletin.com/uhsportsextra/sand-shoji-and-those-transfers/
HPU perhaps?
Why do we need another MB? If anything we need another OH
Oh boy, here we go again…
Well
- if its a MB it makes sense because if Hartong stay as an OH, our Middles are pretty young with exception of Adolpho who saw some action as as freshman but not near where we need this position to have. That said, that leaves Kastl, Hartong, Croson and possibly FF on the OH. So I dont think we need another OH.
Looks like “the deal” happened after Cindy and Dave spoke last as mentioned here.
Oh yes, Olevao, who is likely to red shiet with these many OH at once. Really hoping that no one leaves, if we are fetting this many transfers it only make sense if its because if some are not returning or Shoji keeping a large roster this coming year. Is there a cap on homany you can have in a team? Im sure there is…
Not sure about how many you can carry, but I recall Shoji saying when asked before that they have 20 lockers, to answer that question.
Shoji rarely carries more than 18. they do have 20 lockers.
Well I guess good question to ask Shoji is if he expects to fill those 20 lockers this upcoming season- with 14 on the roster currently, 2 incoming for the class of 2012, and rumored 2 transfers, that makes 18. So if FF comes on board along with this additional rumored MB that will fill the locker room.
this is not in order of the asked question, or the question someone wanted asked.
Shoji prefers 18. whether they end up 20 remains to be seen. he’ll have 12 on scholarship.
Players have shown up at the start of 2-a-days who weren’t expected, some have lasted only the first of the 2 on the first days. some didn’t come back for Day 2.
we won’t know until first day of practice how many they’ll start with.
As far as OH, we have Olevao coming in and Hagins did play as a OH in HS. I guess we have to leave it to Shoji as to how good Hagins is. She played sparingly last year getting into 25 sets. Did he try to recruit her out of HS?
People, need to remember, Adolpho is not a gaurantee to play MB, or even volleyball for that matter. She still needs the approval of the new basketball coach to play volleyball. Remember she is on a basketball scholarship, not a volleyball one.
As of right now, Adolpho is the tallest player on the basketball team, and how the new basketball coach has been training the players. I am wondering if she will allow Adolpho to play volleyball. Cause without Adolpho, the basketball team will be without a true center.
Voster is the tallest on the roster, not Adolpho. Although, I think Adolpho is taller than what she’s listed at.
oops … Vorster
I am wondering if Ginger Long will be transferring to another Hawaii school, like HPU, to get playing time. Does not seem like she will be getting much playing time, in the next couple of years. That would open up another scholarship.
Cindy, here is a question for you, or anyone else who can answer it. Is there such a thing as grayshirting in women’s volleyball, like there is in football?
Grayshirts can happen in any sport.
Grey shirt is a term used to designate an incoming freshman who waits until the second semester to enroll rather than the fall. College athletes are allowed a five year calendar to play four seasons. The calendar begins once one is enrolled. By waiting until the spring to start college, a player will be playing his last season in the sixth year after high school rather than the fifth.
Thank you, Cindy. The reason I asked, just wondering if Dave is thinking of asking the Punahou and Kaiser girls to grayshirt. That way he can bring in some of these underclass players. Those 2 commits for 2013, will most likely redshirt anyway, with the majority of the team returning for 2013.
If the 6’4 MB transfer is true, then it sounds to me like Dave is trying to safeguard himself in case, one, Adolpho is not allowed to play volleyball, and two, FF does not have enough credits to play. I understand the 6’4 MB can also play the outside. Another reason he is bringing in Kastl.
Cindy, does my logic make any sense to you, at all?
logic makes sense but I don’t see it happening. Believe the only transfers are Kastl and Longo. But UH does have a history with transfers from WSU.
wow all these transfers is making feel a bit worried that someone might not be here for next season.. cindy or anyone, any truth to claim of maar decommiting.. thanks in advance..
no idea about Maar. I’ll ask Tsai.
Yikes where did you hear that?? Hopefully not UH needs him badly.
I don’t mean to be a stalker but I looked up Stephanie Hagin’s name on google to try and see maybe a highlight video and came along her twitter and she posted “Cali then Hawaii, life is good” on 4/26. The Volleytalk person said she was deciding between Hawaii and Cal State Fullerton so we know a little more…
She lives in Cali and she vacations on the Big Island. She spent most of last summer on the Big Island. She has friends on the Big Island.
Not trying to throw cold water on this but I would wait for more info before jumping on the VT bandwagon.
maar is staying in canada
Where did you hear that?? I know there is an article online but it’s about him training for the Canadian National team.
And even if he is training with the Canadian national team … Olympics over by the time fall semester starts. he could still be here for fall practice.
VT person is saying Hagins’ already has decided on transfering to Hawaii.
Interesting to know that even though 2 players are leaving WSU, they still got 19 players on the roster, Hagins the tallest at 6’4. They currently have 21 on the roster. Tall players does not come often to UH, tall and good I dont know? There’s not a qhole lot of vidoes out there to see to begin with. She was a redshirt on her first year and saw little action on her redshirt freshman year.
and there is more than one college in Hawai`i with a volleyball team.
I seriously doubt this player Hagins is considering a d2 team. My guess is she is walking on.
Agreed, unless shes worried about playing time at WSU, they do carry a large roster. Im hoping she’s an impact player, and not one of those who transfered to UH just to keep the bench warm.
A “gray shirt” season may not appeal to some. Besides waiting to enroll till the second semester, no scholarship, not allowed to practice with the team, pay for own classes as a part time student. Officially in the program and be on scholarship the following spring. Its like putting their lives on hold for a year.
• 2013 Preview: The latest news from Hawaii is that it is going into chaos there and that many players have asked to leave and are trying to transfer. Their top recruit Stephen Maar (above) actually decommitted apparently so that is a huge hit to their program. Not sure what exactly is going on and why people are wanting to leave but if these rumors are not true I can see Hawaii being decent next year. They lose their stud Steven Hunt who managed to get every kill last year for them but they have a lot of young talent. They have a lot of international players who are high jumpers and great volleyball players such as 6’6 JP Marks.

Sounds like that person is just speculating. But if this is true that’s not good for Charlie Wade.
If its true, stark contrast on what’s happening with the Wahine. Given men’s vball is nowhere near the success of womens college vball in D1 level, its funny how many speculate transfer to UH for womens and speculate transfers or decommiting out in Men’s.
Well women’s game gets more scholarships to give out. Its not like you hear about who is thinking about transferring into the men’s team either.
Well we dont hear anyone transferring to UH Mens program lately because there is no one to talk about as of right. There’s a reason why they give out more schoolies to women’s but I guess you got that figured out too…
Here’s an article (dated 05/03/12) about the McMaster University’s Head Coach being selected to coach the Canadian National Jr. Men’s Team. About halfway down it mentions “Mac recruit Stephen Maar” as a national team recruit. Unless the reporter got it wrong (and I’m hoping that’s the case) it looks like Maar changed his mind and is remaining in Canada and going to McMaster University.
http://www.thespec.com/sports/local/article/717545–preston-takes-charge-of-national-junior-men-s-volleyball-team
If true this is bad news, very bad news for the program. It also makes me think that if the VT poster is right about Maar then perhaps he may also be right about a lot of the current players wanting to jump ship.
stop speculating about kalei, she will be playing volleyball next season.
I sure hope so, she’s the only experienced MB we have for now.
Umm noo, UH has Hartong as well.
Ummmm No I think it was mentioned here last, Dave is set on keeping Hartong as an OH… Unless he change her position between sets like last season.
Any info on Falyn????
no.
