Scates’ farewell tour

On another thread saying it would be nice if UH made some sort of gesture to honor Scates this weekend.

Wade told me that there will be a video presentation and gift before Saturday’s match.

Writing a story on Scates for Friday’s paper. a very interesting man. caught him at his house Tuesday morning and spoke for almost an hour. Guess you can blame me for the Bruins’ loss at LBS later that night … I did interrupt Scates doing his scouting work. ooops.

nice that UH is doing this. Always felt it was too bad that Banachowski never got this since he retired during spring. Had suggested to Sealy that he bring Andy out in 2010. didn’t happen. Think people in Hawaii might appreciate Banachowski more than in LA.

Even though we as fans hate losing to UCLA, Hawaii will probably be the only place where Scates will be honored. And Yes, Banachowski would probably have also been honored. Too bad.

no, other schools are doing it.for sure UCI.
Pepperdine just gave him a painting of the ocean. He and Marv are great friends, coached together at NORCECA in Cuba about 35 years ago. He met Castro, who gave him a picture of himself playing baseball. Al said he didn’t ask to have it signed.

Will your article cover Al’s penchant for directing barbs at Hawaii’s team during the 90’s and 00’s? I seem to remember the classic one of calling UH, ‘Univ of Tel Aviv at Manoa’ during the reign of Leoni, Katz, and Miho.

Was Banachowski’s decision to retire a spur of the moment thing or did he know he was going to retire and didn’t want the “farewell tour” so to speak – maybe he didn’t want all the hoorah that Scates is receiving?

No Don, won’t go there. That was more directed at UH going with so many foreign players when there is such limited spots for U.S. players. Preston said the same thing at UCSB.

As for Banachowski, IMHO he was turning 65 and saw what he thought was a great future with the team disintegrate when Cook and Gil decided to leave. His backup setter had also had left because she didn’t think she was going to see playing time with Cook. believe they actually cancelled the year-end banquet with all the turmoil. I think Andy would have enjoyed a farewell tour, especially to Hawaii
