It really was in Speraw’s court, so to speak.
As he told me a few months ago, there was no reason to leave UCI. But the UCLA doesn’t come along often. He was also looking at the men’s national team since Knipe will be done after the Olympics.

Wow … yes, I guess you can’t say no to the UCLA job. Just too much tradition there. But still how often does that happen … a head coach coming off a national championship season jumping ship to a rival program.
UCI has been the better program too in the last 5 years or so under Speraw, with 3 nat’l championships in the span.
$$$
Don’t thnk it was money. Speraw had a sweet deal with on campus housing. something he won’t get in Westwood.
UCI is a great school but it will never have the panache of UCLA.
Speraw is a great coach…He took over a less-than-mediocre program & turned them into perennial powerhouse champions…A great feat considering UCI doesn’t necessarily get the cream of the crop recruits…
This is good news for Hawaii. Cuz you figure…UCLA would attract talent either way, now that Speraw is there UCLA will remain a powerhouse. Good talent, championship caliber coach…however, who knows what direction UCI will go. Hopefully the wheels fall off of that wagon now that Speraw is gone so that UH can rise above somebody in the future.
Although i do not understand UCI (many schools have “great academic programs”) or anteaters all that well:
Other than:
1) an outstanding Head Coach; or
2) an occasional influx of outstanding talent [See # 1]
(IF there is another good coach or recruiter at UCI, we should find out within a year or two: McMackin vs. Wagner Phenomena…)
Otherwise, i don’t see why UCI should be above UHawai’i for anything than short periods of time (hopefully only past history and trivia now — arrogance? ignorance? We are Not Nebraska…);
esp. with Cal-State’s Financial Woes …
i think Similar w.r.t. Chris Peterson in Football @ Boise …
To clarify, UCI is a UC school, not a Cal State. However both academic systems are in financial problems.
Wades third year at UH was really bad, so far the incoming recruits are not program changers. I don’t foresee much improvement this coming year, Donovan will be hard pressed to extend/renew Charlie’s contract. For a coach with a losing record entering the last year of a contract is an death sentence.
Not to kick a person when they are down but I’m not really sure he would still be the head coach at Pacific if he had stayed there. I appreciate what he meant to the Wahine program but unfortunately he in not getting it done with the vb Warriors.
