Spring matches for Wahine volleyball

By Cindy Luis

Yes, matches will be at the Stan Sheriff Center. Sorry I don’t have the dates with me. It coincides with UH’s break which is mid-March.

I like that they are bringing in a Japanese team. I remember Dave used to do that in the past to help his team improve their passing.

  2. O&B Fan Says:

Yeah, I think they last faced Nittaidai in 2004. Intersting to see if Dave will move players around, like Amber Kaufman. I hope players like Jessica Keefe, Dani Mafua, Stephanie Ferrell and Amanda Simmons see some much-deserved action.

Cindy, what’s with the disappearance of Elise Duggins and Rayna Kitaguchi from the online roster?

  3. alex Says:

will fowler br able to play? Also how is nickie coming along?

  4. Cindy Luis Says:

Catherine is eligible to play. Nickie sounded very positive about her progress last we spoke.

  5. Cindy Luis Says:

You folks don’t miss a thing. Rayna was at the banquet, Elise wasn’t. I’ve been told that both have decided not to return to the team. It’s not a surprise. And, sorry, I don’t know about their plans. I’m assuming Rayna would stay here to finish school. Elise used up a redshirt year sitting out between LBS and UH. I have heard nothing about her transferring.

  6. alex Says:

That is to bad for Elise.. She did make a huge difference in the 2006 season and I thought played well. Im not sure what happened in 2007,but I can understand her getting a little upset and not being able to play or even travel with the team in 07. Well, this does open up the roster a bit more. What DS will be back next season? I know Liz, Jayme Lee, and now Tara Hittle, since she may lose her hitting job to Herring and Aneli? Now we seem to be short on DS players…

Also whats going on with Arnott? Is she going to use up her senior season elsewhere?

  7. O&B Fan Says:

Good luck to Rayna and Elise. It was probably the best decision since they weren’t going to play. If Kanani Herring wins a starting job, I’m thinking one of Aneli and Tara will be moved to defensive specialist. Plus you have Jayme Lee who has taken Kelly Ong’s serving specialist role, and is a pretty good defender and passer. It is going to be tough for any other defensive specialist - and I’m thinking there might be new ones come fall - to see the court. I think it just highlights how special Caroline was. Especially for someone her size to not play but stick around for four years, waiting to get her few seconds on the court each and every time.

  8. Cindy Luis Says:

I don’t see hittle moving to DS but I’ve been wrong before.
Alicia officially “retired” from the sport after ‘06. Unless she goes NAIA, she has no more eligibility.

  9. O&B Fan Says:

Cindy, so if Kanani Herring grabs an OH spot, you think it’s Aneli who’ll lose front row duty? I was looking at the stats and Aneli hit for a better percentage (considering that she played Left for a longer duration and thus received more less-than-perfect outside sets). Their blocking stats aren’t that far apart, and Hittle has the better digging numbers. It’s going to be a tough choice who remains at one of the outside spots if Kanani Herring does start. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if Dave Shoji goes with both Aneli and Hittle in the initial starting lineup and let Kanani prove herself. Even Lily Kahumoku started on the bench, if I recall correctly.

  10. Cindy Luis Says:

There’s seven months before the season opener against Penn State. Who knows what’s going to happen? Shoji likes Hittle’s energy on the court and she came on toward the end as she got more comfortable back on the court. A good dilemma for them.

  11. alex Says:

So for middle, we have Nickie Thomas, Amber Kaufman, and Amanda Simmons and Hewitt. Whats happening there?

OH we have Houston, Herring, Otineru, Hittle, Stefanie Ferrell and Jessica Keefe. That is stacked… Hopefully Houston / Herring 1-2 punch will be there. Kind of like the 1-2 combo Stanford had with Namani and Richards. One power hitter and one crafty player.

Hopefully Stefanie has a good year because she will be key in hopefully filling in Jamie’s shoes for 09. I think she will be a delightful suprise… Also I really want Jessica to do well. She deserves it.

  12. Calli Says:

I think the most important concern at this time is the setting position. Will Stephanie Brandt stabalize the setting this upcoming season. She did a good job this past season, but there were times where her sets were too fast or too low for the hitters. Hopefully she will improve in setting her hitters the kinda sets they each like. I thought Dani also did a good job. She’s a great blocker, and a good attacking setter. Hopefully during the off-season she will hone her setting skills and build competition between her and Steph at the Setting position.

  13. O&B Fan Says:

Shoji has always been big on Hittle. Anyway, I recently watched a few 2004 matches and Hittle was a joy to watch. She seemed to do really well with the faster-paced sets to the right. At times she was unstoppable. I miss the 2004 Hittle.

  14. shai87 Says:

the thing about steph and dani is that when steph gets really tired, dani comes in and takes complete control from there. i like seeing both setters on the court and contributing. it was not something i saw often with cayley and kanoe. kanoe did a good job everytime that cayley hardly came in to set but i think now that steph and dani are familiar with the atmosphere on the court it will be easier for them. i hope shoji uses them both and not just one setter.

about rayna and elise. well thats really sad news, but i guess the loss won’t be huge. i guess i would have loved seeing elise in more. its sad she never got alot of playing time. so, question is this: with elise and rayna departing, does that leave two spots open for other players to come in?

  15. Cindy Luis Says:

Both Rayna and Elise were walk-ons. Players can try out in fall. Dave will only keep a roster of 18.

  16. alex Says:

What is the rumors about Mafua transfering and Hittle not coming back?

    True?
