Stanley on third Olympic team

Pretty much a formality, roster pending approval but

Clay Stanley makes his third team. They are currently in Bulgaria playing for the World League title. This is what we had on our breaking news earlier today.

Kaiser High graduate Clay Stanley was officially named to the United States Olympics men’s volleyball team today, giving Hawaii three volleyball players in London this summer. Stanley joins Lindsey Berg (Punahou) and Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani), who were named to the women’s team earlier.

Like Berg, Stanley is making his third Olympic appearance. The former University of Hawaii hitter led the U.S. to its first gold medal in 20 years at Beijing, where he earned MVP honors, leading the tournament in kills and aces. He also started in Athens in 2004.

The U.S. men are ranked sixth in the world. Stanley, who is the team’s captain, is one of five returning players from the 2008 team. Team USA is in Pool B with top-ranked Brazil, second-ranked Russia, seventh-ranked Serbia, 13th-ranked Germany and 18th-ranked Tunisia. It opens July 29 against Serbia. Semifinal matches are Aug. 10 and medal matches Aug. 12.

    Cindy,

Do you know when Hartong will be back in the islands?

    • Cindy Luis

No, i don’t know. She was supposed to be back for second session and was making arrangements to catch up on the missed week.

      • Steve

        Thank you, Cindy.

Good to know that Hartong and Uiato will have additional time to get their timing down, since Hartong will be playing the outside this year.
