Statistical oddity

By Dave Reardon

According to the individual stats, the biggest play of the University of Hawaii football season so far never happened.

I was doing some stat research last night when I saw that the space next to Gerard Lewis’ name for passes broken up was empty. Didn’t he bat one down in overtime to give UH a 45-44 win at Louisiana Tech on Sept. 8?

He certainly did of course, but it doesn’t count in the individual stats … the reason? Because the play was made on a point-after attempt.

Thanks to Derek Inouchi of the UH media relations department for the explanation.

And yes, I have nothing better to do than this right now. … It’s after midnight and I’m sitting at a gate at Honolulu Airport waiting to start a trip to Idaho that is already more than an hour behind schedule because of a flight delay.

Howzit Dave. Looking forward to your report from Moscow.

Still hard to believe that such a small town in Idaho can produce a D-1 team. Tell us what you think of Moscow Dave. What’s there that would attract a young recruit?

  3. Dave Reardon Says:

I came very close to being stuck in Seattle for 11 hours because all the other flights were booked, and they gave away my seat on the flight I was scheduled for a minute before I got to check in. Yes, one minute.

Don’t try this at home kids, but I let out a loud expletive. And then again. Not directed at anyone, just at the situation. I think that convinced them to give me a confirmed seat on the “full” 1 p.m. flight to Pullman.

All is good now. I am sitting comfortably eating a locomoco of all things at the Seattle airport, waiting for my flight. The locomoco is good — rice, gravy and patty all on par with what you get in Hawaii — except the egg isn’t runny (probably a health code thing). It could be worse, I could be contemplating what I’ll be eating for dinner here.

Moscow ranks somewhere between Ruston and Las Cruces on the excitement scale, but like those other two towns, the people there are nice.

Erickson is a helluva recruiter, so there are still some pretty good players on the Vandals roster.

I can’t resist commenting that your troubles with flying are another indication of why Hawaii needs a ferry. It has become very inconvenient to fly. The last flight I made was to Kona, and it was stressful and a nuisance.

Hi Dave. Are you going to be on the sidelines in the Kiddie Dome? Where do you position yourself during the games? I have only heard very little about what the dome is like. Could you give me a little more info the structure? Do they have food vendors there? Are they inside or outside of the dome? Are the bleachers portable? What is under the bleachers? How is the new playing field compared to the one in the past? Do they still roll it up?

    David,

You are a talented sports writer but this current format will not make it. You do not have the hits or the posts. ST has a great blog but it turns off “purists”. SportsHawaii has a great “message board format” but is NOT the SB (having the SB resources). I believe in the SB’s capability in general and yours in particular. I will make “humble” suggestions by private e-mail and I encourage your friends and fans to do likewise. I like what ST does and he has become a class act but I also believe in competition and want David to succeed.

Air travel has always been a pain; about a thousand things can happen, and only one of them is good — getting there safely on time with your baggage. But that’s life.

We sit in a press box, and it’s kind of neat because it’s close to the action. I don’t remember a whole lot from two years ago other than enjoying the atmosphere of the place. I’ll try to visit again before the game and give you a report.

(Last time I got to see part of an Idaho practice. The intense Nick Holt was the coach then, and AC/DC was being pumped through the speakers, loud and proud. Sweet.)

The bosses are happy so far, our stats have been consistent and we’ve had only a few complaints from readers. We are not at a stage where we consider ourselves truly competing with other blogs. We are still getting our feet wet.

The main thing I like is that this site is developing a personality of posters haveing respect and tolerance for each other, but without the luvvy-duvvy kumbaya aspect. We’re not a chatroom, but we’ll talk about UH football all day and sometimes all night.

With all that being said, I welcome all suggestions, and yes, do prefer getting them by email. Also, the Star-Bulletin has just hired a new webmaster with a journalism degree and I look forward to meeting with him to discuss the direction of this blog.

I look forward to your emails KL.

I don’t think that this blog necessarily ‘fails’ if it doesn’t match or exceed the amount of reader posts that, say, Tsai’s blog gets on a daily basis.

But I do agree that some minor tweaking would be a good thing. For starters you may want to consider instant posting of replies, rather then wait for editorial approval of each msg. and you may also want to consider a single, daily blog entry (like tsai’s) and continuously add updates to that entry as y’all see fit. the benefit of a single daily blog entry is you can gather all user-msgs/replies into a single bucket rather then spreading them out over the 2-3 daily entries and create more of a cohesive start point for any dialogue that takes place on your blog.

otherwise - good stuff and glad to see the healthy evolution of your grass shack in the blogsphere.

    Hey Dave,
When you get settled, can you give us a Blaze Soares update? I am happy that he is making the trip, thus I assume he is in top playing shape, or should we have the same concern that we had about Colt last week with the fear if he plays he could possibly further injure his hamstring? Thanks

PS Beware of going into Wallace, ID. I’ve heard some tales……

  13. t warrior Says:

    Dave,
Hope you made finally make it to Idaho safely. I’ve really enjoyed your blog and have been a follower from day 1–a true “Reardo.” I appreciate your efforts at this blog to bring hardore fans the inside scoops on the Warriors. Whatever you do keep I hope you keep it hardore football as you say, all day and all night.

Bye the way is Blaze good to go. Also, can you give us an update on Colt’s “tweaked” ankle at the next practice. Also, any word from the Idaho side on Jackson–also with a tweaked ankle.

    Again, thanks for you efforts.
    Go Warriors

  14. Dave Reardon Says:

I’m all for instant posting of replies, because from the very start our posters have without exception been very classy and I believe trustworthy (Mr. Mayfield doesn’t post, he sends emails). But the higher-ups wouldn’t budge on this when I asked in late August. I think it is not negotiable, but I can try ask again.

Yes, I agree the single entry with updates might be the way to go. Or maybe twice a day mo betta?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

  15. Dave ReardonM Says:

Blaze is going to have to test the hammy some time, and I think this is the time. Garans it wouldn’t be if they still had that cement they called artificial turf.

Greg McMackin and Cal Lee both said Blaze will play Saturday.

  16. Dave Reardon Says:

BMac monitored practice again today, and he said Colt still looked a little hobbled, but nothing was wrong with the precision of his passes.

The Moscow-Pullman paper quotes Idaho coach Robb Akey today saying Deonte Jackson probably being out with the high ankle sprain.

“I don’t anticipate him going,” is the direct quote.

Thank you all for your comments and questions. I’ll check back later, but right now I’ve got to process some words for tomorrow’s print edition.

  17. Kekoa Says:

Dave - Sharpen up your statistical pencil and be ready for some unreal numbers to post. I feel like Colt will light up the dome with a “Pent-up” passing display that will dazzle the Heisman bean counters. It will also allow him to highlight his running backs in a long awaited “bucka-loose” style Moscovites will be thrilled to have witnessed. When Colt has his offensive arsenal totally unleashed, they can then declare their dome officially re-opened for business.

  18. Dave Reardon Says:

Since it’s a day game, it would be good for Colt if he has big numbers …more expoisure back east.
