sunday at the arena

By Cindy Luis

Very nice ceremony before the match, unveiling the sculpture of Dr. Donnis Thompson. The alumnae match was fun to watch as well.

hey cindy….thanks for all your great work on this blog. seeing that you have such great contact with the Wahine program, my question to you is about Mafua. Seeing her play more than the last 2 or 3 points of a game was a real treat tonight, seeing her get into her groove. Has Brandt “locked up” the setter position for the next two years, or do you feel (or hear, from other players or coaches) that Mafua will have a legitimate chance to start next year or the year later?

    So which alumni team won?

  14. Mike Says:

    Cindy,
Seems like Ferrell was the only one that didn’t see action tonight. Is it because there is still a possibility of a medical redshirt?

  15. Cindy Luis Says:

it is nice to see dani out there earlier than the waning moments. they need two competent setters and dani gives them a different look. dani was considered the better blocker early on but stephanie has really improved. what i think people forget is how great a blocker kanoe was and she was really good at getting whoever was next to her to close the block. and she had great timing.
unfortunately for dave he has the same situation as kanoe-cayley, margaret-jen with two setters in the same class. it’s just worked out that way. i know he’d rather have it staggered I.e. freshman-junior, sophomore-senior

  16. rainbowfan Says:

thanks for all the insights, Cindy. But, does Dani have the chance to over take Brandt sometime in the future, much like Ah-Mow or Vakasausau?

  17. Duster Says:

When the season started, I thought the Wahine would miss Kanoe’s defense the most. I think Stephanie has improved in her digging and blocking. She also possesses the best serve on the team, and had a whole year of experience at the D-1 level before this season. Dani looks like she puts up sweeter looking sets to me, but Stephanie might bring more to the table - at this time, anyway. Hopefully, they continue to work hard and push each other to get better - irrespective of who plays.

    JMHO.

  18. icon Says:

Not only have I not forgotten how good Kanoe was for UH as a blocker, but, for her serves too.

One correction though, Brandt and Mafua aren’t in the same class, one is a red-shirt freshman, while the other is a sophomore.
