Alot of injuries to key players in the BWC have hurt the conference RPI, this year. Something Shoji has no control over. If BWC conference teams stay away from having key players injured, I feel the BWC conference RPI, as a whole will go up, next year, even with BSU entering the conference.

  • dedicatedfan November 18, 2012 at 6:08 pm

All Shoji and the Wahine can do is win the next 2 BWC matches, and see if the Selection Committee also considers the AVCA poll, in seeding teams. Someone mentioned in VTalk that it may be better that the Wahine are not seeded. Cause if they are seeded they may have to play Stanford, Penn St., or Texas, in the Regional Semifinal , like they did last year, with USC.

  • I Got It November 18, 2012 at 6:18 pm

I see movement on the Sand VB roster web page.Lot of names disappeared.

  • dedicatedfan November 18, 2012 at 6:38 pm

The only player, not on the indoor roster, playing sand volleyball is, Brittany Tiegs.

    • warriorfan November 18, 2012 at 6:44 pm

My guess is Tiegs is the only sure thing to make the roster and the rest of the girls training have to make the squad still?
Kind of was hoping Hartong would play, so she would keep improving her defense and shot selection.

      • Cindy Luis November 18, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Obviously this is not the final roster for Sand. I know that Wong was working on scholarship numbers. they can award up to 6 at some point but don’t know if UH has committed to six for this season. they have committed to three, perhaps four. will check with him Tuesday at practice.

        • dedicatedfan November 18, 2012 at 7:02 pm

I hope not, hoping Hagins decides to play sand volleyball, it will help her out, It helped out Vorster.

          • Cindy Luis November 18, 2012 at 7:52 pm

It is a lot to ask them to play both seasons. especially when indoor has a spring season. Wong said he’d like to not stretch the indoor team.

        • dedicatedfan November 19, 2012 at 8:45 am

Very interesting interview Bobby Curran had with Dave Shoji this morning, Monday. Dave Shoji said, he will not be coaching another 5 years, he was definite about that. My guess, he will coach thru 2014, and quite possibly, 2015, but not more then that.

Another thing Dave mentioned, he did not recruit Emily Hartong, Mike Sealey did. In fact, Dave said, Mike Sealey had to talk Dave into recruiting Emily. At first Dave did not want to recruit Emily, but upon Mike insisting Dave recruit Emily, he did. Thank you Mike Sealey.

          • Cindy Luis November 19, 2012 at 10:22 am

Caught part of the interview. not all. Dave will be 66 next month.
What he told me was he was not going to end up being the all-time leader in wins, that he doesn’t think he’ll be around long enough to pass Scates (1185) but that Russ Rose will end up with the record.

As for Sealy, Uiato was Shoji’s recruit. Sealy’s were Hartong and Goodman for that class.

      • dedicatedfan November 18, 2012 at 7:00 pm

I am thinking, Hartong may want to keep herself available for the National Team, or anything like that.

  • dedicatedfan November 18, 2012 at 6:40 pm

It is good to see that Ashley Kastl has decided to play Sand Volleyball, it will help her tremendously.

  • vballfreak808 November 18, 2012 at 9:11 pm

If the rest of the players have to tryout, I think these players will:

    Height:Name (Hometown/Previous School)
    5’10:Shayla Hixson (Honolulu/LIU Post)
    5’10:Ashley Johnson (Carlsbad/Carlsbad)
6’0:Emily Mount (Rancho Santa Margarita/Irvine Valley College)
    5’9:Nikki Miyashita (Aptos/Aptos)
    5’10:Kuulei Zalopany (Spokane/Hawaii Pacific)

I am guessing Katie Spieler will also be trying out as well since one of her decisions was sand volleyball

    • uhfan November 19, 2012 at 7:32 am

Dont know why Johnson wouldnt be on the roster already. She was recruited for sand.

      • Lets Rattle The Cage November 19, 2012 at 8:23 am

Sand hasn’t made any announcements on who signed NLI’s and I’m just wondering why. The Shinn kid said she did back on the 14th.

I realize that Scott has his hands full with the indoor team but I’m also sure these kids would like some acknowledgement if they did sign.

I’m also wondering if this program even has an SID who should be handling this stuff.

        • Cindy Luis November 19, 2012 at 10:49 am

She may have signed her NLI but does UH have it?
          Is she in school already?
          I’ll ask Wong tomorrow.
          They do have an SID.

          • uhfan November 19, 2012 at 3:05 pm

            She’s on the roster now

  • OrbitalripZ November 19, 2012 at 12:02 am

A couple of ‘mea’ (things) are on my mind as everyone waits for today’s NCAA RPI. It just occurred to me that last week’s RPI (11/12) might have been the last that the NCAA releases until after the NCAA Championship. We’ll find out later today. Either way, the UH is still in the “ballpark” and that’s all that matters.

Another thing on me like white on rice is the regionals. Of the 4 predetermined regional hosts, only one looks like “money.” Or oil. Texas (9-team Big 12) is the only predetermined regional host that should be awarded a subregional (says me). Texas (23-3) has a final match at runner-up Iowa State this Saturday, which could snap the Horns 17-match win streak but would be meaningless otherwise.

California (Pac-12) is 14-14. It hosts Utah on Monday and Stanford on Friday. Unless the Bears take down the Utes tonight, it’s more than likely that 1 of the 4 regional hosts will be eliminated even before the NCAA Tournament begins! What an embarrassment of bitches for the NCAA that would be!

Nebraska (Big Ten), currently in a 3-way tie for second in league standings, has lost 4 of its last 10 matches. Even when it wins its last 2 gimme matches at home this week, it will still have lost 4 of its last 10 matches. Based on that record, should the Big Red also be awarded with a subregional? Silly me to even ask such a question.

Purdue (Big Ten) is in 6th position in conference standings. Many argue — and I would agree — that this has not been a megastrong year for the Big Ten. And that begs the question: how many of the 12 teams should the NCAA invite to Showtime? Certainly the Big Ten’s top 4 teams: Penn State (27-2), Nebraska (21-6), Minn (22-7), and Ohio St (22-8). And it must invite Purdue (19-10) — just because it’s the predetermined regional host. But Purdue over Michigan State (23-7) or Michigan (21-11)? Two matches left for each of the Big Ten schools.

Expect a lot of bloodletting and handwringing from this year’s NCAA (Selection) Committee.

    • Cindy Luis November 19, 2012 at 11:03 am

Why do you consider it an embarrassment for the NCAA if the regional host doesn’t advance to its regional?
Sites are awarded several years in advance. Schools usually put in a bid thinking they’re going to have a team that’s good enough to be there but it is hard to predict just how good your team will be in 2-3 years. and you never can predict injuries.
Hawaii put in for the 2011 regional back in 09. They knew Danielson would be a senior and they’d have Hewitt. They also knew they had a good recruiting class signed in Uiato, Hartong and Goodman.

  • Hardware in the Mail November 19, 2012 at 8:09 am

Does the Big West have an awards banquet ? I’m thinking not but don’t really know.

Maybe they just FedEx everything ?

    • Cindy Luis November 19, 2012 at 10:47 am

No banquet. awards shipped to the schools.

  • volleyball fan November 19, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Cindy, do you know already who will be the regional hosts in 2013? Shouldn’t Hawaii put in a bid having so many seniors then, including Emily Hartong?

    • Cindy Luis November 19, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Sites have been awarded through 2014,
      those were announced in 2010

2013 Regionals USC, Kentucky, Florida, Illinois
NCAA championship site in Seattle (UW)

2014 Regionals: Washington, Iowa State, Louisville, Minnesota
NCAA championship site is Oklahoma City.

Don’t know if UH put in a bid for the regionals either year. but NCAA tries to do a bit of a rotation so Hawaii hosted 2012. thinking maybe 2015 or 16 the next time? and UH has only put in to host the final four every 10 years. So they got 89 and 99…. but their bid was turned down for 09.

  • dedicatedfan November 19, 2012 at 2:49 pm

Cindy, I can see Shoji staying thru the 2014 season, then retiring, Just to get that new recruiting class off to a good start. There could be as many as 7 new scholarship players on that 2014 team.

    • uhfan November 19, 2012 at 3:05 pm

He’ll need a better recruiter first

  • Andre April 18, 2019 at 3:53 am

A monetary advisor is your planning companion.

days in the past? Any certain?

  • Cierra April 23, 2019 at 10:50 am

I think everything typed made a ton of sense. However,
think about this, what if you wrote a catchier post title?
I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your website, but what if you added a post
title that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean Volleyshots – Hawaii News –
is a little plain. You could peek at Yahoo’s front page
and note how they create article headlines to grab people to open the links.
You might try adding a video or a pic or two to grab
readers excited about what you’ve written. Just my opinion, it would bring your blog a little bit more interesting.
