U.S. women win Grand Prix, U.S. men advance to World League final round

Former University of Hawaii middle Heather Bown had three kills and four blocks, and Kalani High product Tamari Miyashiro added eight digs as the U.S. women’s national volleyball team swept host China 26-24, 25-21, 27-25 Sunday to win its third consecutive FIVB World Grand Prix championship in Ningbo, China.
The Americans, ranked No. 1 in the world, finished 14-0 in the tournament en route to winning their fifth Grand Prix title overall. Brazil is the only other country to win three in a row, doing so from 2004 to 2006.
Bown and Miyashiro are still in the running for a spot on the Olympic roster. Punahou School graduate Lindsey Berg has secured a spot at setter and sat out this past week’s competition.
In Dallas, former Univeristy of Hawaii opposite Clay Stanley had a match-high 23 kills to lead the U.S. national men’s volleyball team to a 26-28, 25-20, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10 victory over Italy Sunday in final FIVB World League Intercontinental Round pool-play match.
Stanley, the team captain, added two blocks as the Americans advanced to the World League final round Wednesday through Sunday in Sofia, Bulgaria. The defending Olympic gold medalists, ranked sixth in the world, finished 9-3 in pool play.

    This is unrelated to volleyball.

Former Warrior Wide Receiver Jason Ross’s daughter is going to the London Olympics as part of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team. Kyla Ross is one of 5 women picked to represent the U.S. at the London Olympics.

Thanks for re-posting the info from Tsai’s London Calling blog entry from yesterday. Watched the finals last night. didn’t make the connection. very cool.

Watched the mens game in person. It was a really good match to see. Stanley did pretty good. Only like 2 errors. Really steady player. Finals match should be go.

The Olympic roster for the women has been posted on the USAV web site (I would post the link, but my it might cause the post to get stuck in the filters). But here’s the roster:

    2012 USA Olympic Roster:

    Logan Tom
    Jordan Larson
    Megan Hodge
    Foluke Akinradewo
    Danielle Scott
    Christa Harmotto
    Destinee Hooker
    Tayyiba Haneef Park
    Lindsey Berg
    Courtney Thompson
    Nicole Davis
    Tamari Miyashiro

Happy for the 2 local products on the team. But sad/shocked that Bown did not make it … I thought for sure she had the edge over Scott. But they’re both great veterans, no doubt.

Bown is an alternate though. The alternates are:

    Alisha Glass
    Carli Lloyd
    Heather Bown
    Jennifer Tamas
    Cynthia Barboza
    Kristin Richards
    Nancy Metcalf
    Nicole Fawcett

Bown not being on the team is a joke but whatever.

Feel bad for Bown. I was hoping that she would get to go. I think that ChristaHarmotto just came on strong and was a blocking machine, particularly in their last win over the Brazilians.
Very impressed with Danielle Scott. This is her fifth Olympics. That’s got to be a record right?

If I am not mistaken, Bown, as an alternate, will still beable to go, just not play in the games, unless someone gets hurt. The alternates are used as the practice team.

      • Warrior15

No they are not. The alternates may go — though I’m not sure if it’s on their dime or USAV/USOC’s dime — and they are not used as the practice squad.

        • Steve

          Warrior15,

I believe it is on the USAV/USOC’s dime, like all the alternates in the other sport events. Also, what I meant by practice team, the would be allowed to practice with the USA Team, as far as I know.
