UH Softball Extra–day 1

OKLAHOMA CITY >> Amanda Taualii watched the Women’s College World Series as kids, so practicing in the park that came to symbolize the ultimate goal for softball players was a stirring moment.

“I can remember watching with my two best friends saying ‘we’re going to be there someday,” Taualii said yesterday. “Those are the two people I called immediately and said, ‘I’m going you guys.’ ”

Taualii’s childhood friends will be among the UH cheering section for tomorrow’s game against Missouri.

The Rainbow Wahine got their first chance to practice in ASA Hall of Fame Stadium today, getting used to the feel of the infield, measuring how much room they have chasing foul balls and envisioning the atmosphere when the stands are filled tomorrow.

“Defensively, as an infield its good to see how the ball hops, and this is a big stage,” Taualii said. “It’s good for the girls to see what kind of environment we’re going to be playing in. Alabama was a great warmup for us, we had 3,000 screaming fans against us. If we can win there I think we can win anywhere.”

Freshman pitcher Kaia Parnaby was already familiar with the park, having played there with the Australian national team.

>> The Rainbow Wahine got more good news after practice when third baseman Melissa Gonzalez was named a first-team All-American and Kelly Majam made the second team.

>> Missouri coach Ehren Earleywine is thankful for the deeper dimensions at Hall of Fame Stadium as the Tigers prepare to face the nation’s top home run hitting team.

“It’s like in baseball, if you keep the Phillies or Yankees in the park you’ve got a chance to beat ‘em,” he said. “It’s slight advantage the fact that the fences have been moved back and raised and hopefully the wind will be blowing in.”

The bigger advantage may be the fact that the Tigers have the experience of playing in the WCWS last year.

More trash talk coming out of the ESPN announcers in today’s (Thursday) game. These people are a piece of work. One called Aguirre “lazy” on the fly out in the bottom of the seventh. I think it was Michele Smith.
