Wahine spring mini-tourney

March 12th, 2011
By Cindy Luis

From Ann Miller
Hawaii dominated in three matches against Oahu DII teams today in Gym II.
Said Tuaniga had 11 blocks in three matches, Maeda 18 digs.
Wahine swept Chaminade and HPU, dropped a set to BYUH.
Hewitt sat out with a sore back.
Libero candidates in school Maeda, Griffiths, Kam.
Satele and Goodman split time on the right
Hartong played outside. she and Waber played all the way around.
Uiato, the only setter, played every minute.
As reported earlier, Wahine will scrimmage UCLA and play in USC tourney.

Oh, and my original schedule was correct with Pepperdine here for two matches. Ann had said they were going to be in Malibu.

    some more from Ann
Said Waber and Hartong hit out of the backrow a lot and Uiato had 17 digs. That Vorster needs some time in the weight room, a little thin at 6-5.
Chaminade coach Nahaku Brown, former UH All-American setter, liked Uiato a lot,

  • People Watcher

So I would have said to Brittany …. I hear that the players who made the A2 team have been notified .

  • Cindy Luis

I did ask Ann that but haven’t heard back from her.

  • safinator

I was impressed with Waber. She played really steady and her defense and passing was good. Her swings out of the backrow were aggressive as well. Hartong hit at the outside really solid and with authority. So if they both play like how I saw today, they will be hard to be out of the line up.. Vorster’s kills were not there or her timing.. I see her red shirting for sure.. Kanani and Satele looked sharp.. Can’t wait to see Jane Croson in the mix. Uiato was poised and played very smart. If she can get a little bit stronger she will be there and ready. Her set locations were spot on.

My prediction for the starting line up:

    OH1 Kanani
    OH2 Satele
    RS Croson / Waber
    M1 Hewitt
    M2 Hartong
    S Uiato

    • dino

Hartong projected at M2,why do they have her hitting at outside only and not playing M2. Is she that good, she doesnt need more reps there to improve her blocking and hitting at the net

thanks for your insights, how are we doing at libero and our serve receive and passing, which i think was our main weakness last season

    • Cindy Luis

A solid lineup prediction, safine. Libero will be intersting. feel like it’s Maeda’s to lose. Griffiths could be in there and they may use Stauber when she gets here. We shall see.

    • Spike

I’m not sure about Satele in the OH2 position. I’m basing this solely on last season, who knows how much she will improve over the summer? IMO she was very inconsistent and had all of her worst matches against the top/toughest competition they played. She also was a non-factor in the post-season (and the WAC final) which is something the Wahine can’t afford. Waber did well at the end of the season and has a huge upside – not to mention the height advantage that is crucial in today’s game.

Danielson is a lock and Croson will probably break the starting line-up. The other hitting position is up for grabs but I would give Waber the edge over Satele. I would give Hartong the edge over Satele, too, if they decide to move her to the outside.

It will be interesting to see how things pan out this fall.

  • Waikoloa Fan

Nice to be reading about Wahine volleyball again. Looking forward to next season which of course is still a long ways off.

  • Cindy Luis

Don’t know if Hartong will be M2. i think they’ll ltake a hard look at her at OH. and depending on how Vorster develops … hartong good in the middle, works hard, undersized. reminds me of what Dyer goes through on the men’s team. Hartong very versatile. the key will be to get her to play all the way around.

  • Safinatot

I kind of feel Satele is needed at the LS . She and kanani are almost identical there. Ut it really don’t matter since kanani, Satele and croson will be moving around anyways.. I really like hartong on the outside , but we are overloaded on ohs… Also waber will be so improved this season and i can see her fighting for a spot. However 2012 and 2013 will be wabers years for sure.. At libero… I am rooting for Emily maeda, but I feel she lacks confidence. Idk if griffiths can last endurance wise. She needs to be in better condition and hopefully she can work on her fitness this summer.. So @ liberowill really be a toss up..

  • Safinatot

Maybe waber and hartong can swap middle and oh like how Kim willoughby and Veronica lima did. That 2000 season, the ohs and muddles hit everywhere. It was so exciting. Kim doing step outs, quick sets, Lima slides, middles and LS .. It was really cool!!

  • Cindy Luis

As we’ve said several times, quoting Shoji, Waber will not be in the middle.

  • Kimo

I think the lineup will be:

    Danielson/ Croson (OH)
    Hewitt/ Forsythe (MB)
Satele (OPP) [Goodman if Dave runs a 6-2]
Uiato (S) [Stauber if Dave runs a 6-2]

Hawaii is going to need Croson’s passing in order for the setter to run a quick offense.

As for Libero, not quite sure. Haven’t seen Kam play. Griffiths needs to improve on foot work in order for her to pass well. Maeda needs to work on consistency.

    • Pochonese

VERY reminiscent of ‘78-’79 when Diane Sabastian arose like that renowned, mythical phoenix (IF you will). :P
      __
      …Don’t know if there’s a hidden/unrealized leader in this particular (2011) unit?. OR…do we???
My $ is on: Griffiths (IF she can trim down. As, consequently, I ?know? that she could definitely, then, ‘crack it’ (w/ da whip, in as a starter) to Na Wahine’s benefit.

*Maybe she should remain in HI for the summer and play everyday/all day on the sand…this would REALLY help!

      Po’o/???/!!!/inokea…?

      • Pochonese

btw, SHOULD some body (of Suga variety) vacate a schollie, next 2011, & Alex, as a matter of happenstance, becomes (non brunette) K. Kardashian…then she gets the last bit of finacial aid.

I’m telling (some of) you…get the hook up with Hiroku @ da ABC.
        :p

  • 5100

No mention of that other libero candidate who was with the team last year but was not officially on the roster? I can’t remember her name. Cindy mentioned her as a possible libero this year. Also, are they really good enough in the middle that they can afford to move Hartong to the outside? IMO, Hartong did not contribute much to the blocking, and when she was playing outside, she was just as inconsistent as Waber. With Danielson locked for a spot, Satele and Waber returning starters, Croson a hyped recruit who is thought to make an immediate contribution, and Hartong joining that race, someone is going to have to sit.

    • Cindy Luis

libero candidates about 6 of them, Kam back after injury. believe you’re thinking of Courtney Lelepali. Still with the team.
they’ll also have an invited walk-on out of HBA next year. K. Kawamura.
I happen to like Satele on the right. They’ve worked with Tuaniga so much in the middle don’t see her moving to OH/Opp now.

  • Lani

Yes, wasn’t her name Lelepali or something..

  • 808

Courtney Lelepali was there but she’s still completing her redshirt year (ending in May) so could not participate in the scrimmages; she is participating in spring practice, though. She spent much of the day refereeing the matches. She’s surely in the mix for the libero position, along with Maeda, Griffiths, Kam and a few other players that are expected to join the mix in fall camp (I don’t know specifically who they are). I thought that Forsythe and Tuaniga anchored the block pretty well so maybe the coaches are seeing that in practice too, leading to giving Hartong more time to try out on the outside.

  • Pochonese

I’m only sorry that the Pepperdine matches are not in L.A. as originally thought. It bodes well for RPI, but…

I’d still like to know about any ‘last minute’ transfers which are here/could be on there way.
    Dunno?!

I think that “Kimo” is spot on in his analysis. :-)
    ___
Good luck in Long Beach this weekend, Warriors.
I’m enjoying Hunt’s progression (so far) this season, as his game continues to improve.

    • ???

You are def “out there”! Spot on??? No Hartong or Waber in the line up and you adding more transfers???

      • Pochonese

You and your Hartong and Waber. You’ve, no doubt, self declaired/revealed as their BIGGEST fans. since, what, HS days??? It’s a completely different animal now. Both are STILL too green; by 2012 they should be okay, as I’m believing.

& Why don’t you just post, as, who (i think) you are?
Remember…Just because “they think I dunno nothing”…doesn’t mean it’s true (in fact, quite the contrary).
        ___
        Anyway.
Where did the ‘talk’ about Brazilians ever go??? Hadn’t Dave suggested (in a radio show once) that it was a possibility?
I don’t know how much longer Dave believes that a NC could/possibly awaits…OR is it even an objective, any longer??? Hard, tho, when the clearcut way is IF the STUDENT-athletes are (to be) ONLY focused upon vb *and nothing else.* #s 51-150…Tawa, as you’ll recall (;-)).
Uiato needs competition to push/refine, as well.

*”Out there”…is in fact precise, also. ;-)

    • Pochonese

      ‘their’

      • Leave Blank

LOL, What school you went ? :-)

        • Pochonese

da one which teaches there students to play vb, in they’re classrooms,…in the islands over their. ;-)

        • Pochonese

          Maybe you’ve heard of it…
Goveas’ (home school) cohort. Sorry, Cin.
We used to take Thurs & Fri off for beach days. It was great to study ’science’ and ‘math’, with the waves, at Waimea.
We used to study English with all of the birds/parrots in Paradise Park, also. Boy, some of those animals could really talk your ear off I’ll tell you. Many of them spoke PERFECT English, too, as their trainers were only Haole.
          :P

Someone said Vorster needs to add weight I disagree she’s pretty healthy looking.

  • Kimo

My analysis is based on the 2010 season. Yes, Hartong was more agile and fluid in the middle but no major blocking threat. Plus her offensive output was mediocre for a team who aspires to win a national championship. She ran the slide well if the setter had great passes but other than that, her kills weren’t so spectacular. Alexis is a beast as a blocker and is proving to be an offensive attacker as well. For that position, we need BOTH blocking & hitting. As far as the opposite position is concerned, Satele has proven to be a threat in that position both as a hitter and a blocker. A change in that position doesn’t seem necessary. Of course like I said, this is MY analysis and this is MY reasoning for my starting line-up selection.

    • Pochonese

      AGAIN, most accurate!

da only exception to which I’d take (yes, imo)…”Satele has proven to be a threat in that position both as a hitter and a blocker. A change in that position doesn’t seem necessary.”
      ___
She doesn’t seem aggressive enough. [I wonder if Tuaniga wouldn't be better served at Opp.]
The Huskies ‘ate her for lunch’ in 2010.
Perhaps she was most aggressive at St. Mary’s (in 2009)…certainly against Stanford in Rd.#2, dunno?!
Mom/dad are watching, now. Hawai’i is home. ;-)

      • Kimo

What happened towards the end of last season was that everyone knew that they COULD NOT stop Kanani. Instead, they focused on Satele and was able to contain her. With the bad passing, the middles were NOT involved. That left one hitter open; Kanani Danielson. The only thing the opponents had to do was line up their diggers with the open shot their blockers gave Kanani and hope they could dig it up for a transitional play which most of the time they did. I’m hoping with Jane @ the OH2 spot (OPP doesn’t pass all that much), it will solidify the passing allowing the setter multiple options including the backrow attack (last season, the OH2 was subbed out in the backrow with a defensive specialist).

        • !!!

Actually, most teams were indeed focusing on Kanani. Satele was mediocre at best. Hopefully, she will improve or they can find a terminator at that position who isn’t easily contained by taller teams.

I do agree that the bad passing did not help open up the middles. Bad passing was their downfall.

  • ???

You’re expecting a lot from a player who has never played in a collegiate game….just sayin

    • Pochonese

Hey…that’s more the thought processing to which you should press forward.
      :-)

    • Kimo

Kim Willoughby, Kanoe Kamana’o, & Kanani Danielson all played on the Youth National Team and made an immediate impact for the Wahine in their Freshman season. A lot of us are hoping that Jane Croson follows in their lead (as she was an asset on the YNT) and continue the tradition.

  • rayson

I agree with Spike’s assessment above. Who gets the OH2 position will largely be determined by how well she can pass. Hope she proves me wrong but passing is not one of Satele’s strengths which is why I think they will keep her on the right side. OH2 and OPP (and MB2 and L) are up for grabs and it should be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

  • Pochonese

    Anybody else with a ‘clue’?
Rd. of 16 (NCAA WVB 2011), UW vs. @UH…
Pt. Huskies, at 15-10, in the 3 to 2 sets win.
    ___
    On with collegiate ’sand’;
    Next.

  • 5100

Forsythe was slowed by injury last year, correct? Barring injuries this year, I hope she gets a shot in the middle. Especially if Hartong will concentrate on the outside.

  • Cindy Luis

Forsythe … it was more of an illness but she also had lingering affects from a previous injury.
She can be a force in the middle and not a bad option if Hartong goes to L2 or RS. There’s also Tuaniga. It will be interesting.

    • 5100

Cindy, has Tuaniga made a lot of progress since last year? She didn’t contribute much last year and was mediocre whenever she got in. I remember Nickie Thomas (and Sanders, Gregory, Keefe, etc.) being utilized in the same manner as a redshirt freshman, and she had a number of brilliant moments.

  • Cindy Luis

I haven’t been at the practices. I know they are hoping that she will contribute more. I’ve seen her make progress but she has had some abdominal strain issues that didn’t allow her play some last season. not sure what they’re thinking if Hartong goes outside. opens a spot for Tuaniga in the middle but you’ll also have Vorster. we shall see.

  • I would like to know if there is confirmed location for wac women volleyball tournament in November

  • Cindy Luis

At the moment the WAC tournament is again scheduled for the Orleans Arena. But we’ve been told that could change when the WAC Council meets in May.
