From the Big West today

Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell announced the 2012 fall sportsmanship team award winners with the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine soccer and volleyball teams earning recognition for their respective sports.

The Sportsmanship Award is voted upon by the respective student-athletes in each of the Big West’s 16 championship sports. Winning teams are honored with commemorative tee-shirts.
UH women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji said: “Our players always respect the opponent and that’s something we’ve learned to do over the years as a program. It’s a tribute to our players that opposing coaches and players recognize this.”
“We are humbled and proud to receive the Sportsmanship Award from the Big West Conference,” said UH women’s soccer head coach Michelle Nagamine. “I have long believed that athletics is a vehicle for our players to become better people.  This award shows that our players can compete at a high level with integrity and respect for all components of the game.”

The other fall sports acknowledged by the Big West were men’s soccer (UC Irvine), men’s cross country (UC Riverside) and women’s cross country (Pacific).
