Week II, Day IV, Practice 1
By Cindy Luis
Was on the phone with Shoji. Apparently they had a practice this morning. We were told yesterday they weren’t. Oh well.
only 1 practice today. 1 practice tomorrow, which includes the Green-White scrimmage
Dave said this morning went well, that they look good at times, but a little concerned at other times. said he hoped the ‘good’ team shows up Friday. Said he thought they had the pieces but wasn’t there yet. No set starting lineup but getting there. Probably will tweak it as the season goes along.
As we’ve been discussing the four middles are all trying to claim a spot. And he agreed from what has been said here, that Longo is the top libero with Maeda No. 1 at DS. with 15 subs this year there’s going to be a lot of situatoinal stuff going on.
Most of the stuff we talked about was for the preview magazine story. I’m doing the feature on him. Asked if being in the Big West will affect recruiting. He said that it might help players who were already looking at Hawaii. The travel is obviously better.
Asked who he might redshirt. He said he won’t make that decision until maybe next Wednesday or Thursday.

Volleyshots

Cindy,
Did Shoji mention which players would be on the Green and White teams. Would it be supposed 1st Unit against supposed 2nd Unit. Or, would they just have Wong and Ah Mow just pick players.
What time is the Green-White scrimmage tomorrow?
Mad Dog,
Just a remainder, you need to be a volleyball booster member to be able to watch the Green and White scrimmage.
No, they haven’t set up the teams. They are going to do a short practice beforehand. Probably do much like last year. play a set, change a few players, play another set.
I can see Shoji tweaking the lineup throughout the season, depending on who they are playing. For instance, if they are playing an extremely tall team, you could see Vorster, Hagins, and Goodman. But if they are playing a small quick team, you could see Adolpho, Tuaniga, and Kastl. These are just examples of what Shoji could do, throughout the season.
What is going on with Kastl? One day coming here is the greatest thing she has ever done now the last few days she’s complaining about having to live on an island so far away from home.
Vinny,
Could it be that she thought she was gauranteed a starting position, but Goodman’s improvement has put a damper on that thought.
I was thinking the same thing Steve because this just started .
it’s a good thing you guys aren’t jumping to conclusions … based off absolutely no evidence …
was Kastl complaining?
Homesick and twenty years old. She’ll settle down after a year here, I hope. She might be in the same academic situation as Hewitt, graduate and pass playing next year.
Last I heard Shoji is undecided if Hartong is LS or RS. If RS happens I see Kastl starting as OH2. I see it this way, if Shoji wants more firepower he’ll start Kastl. Like the men’s game the RS is the biggest gun, and Mita is consistently good at the backset.
Not sure who you heard that from regarding Hartong. But in this scheme the Lefts hit twice on the left once on the right, rights hit 2 on the right, once on the left.
So you’ll see all Lefts on the right once and all rights on the left once.
Kastl and Olevao both play left and right so he likes that versatility. Don’t see Hartong as THE right. She can give them more production on the left. Much depends on how the other team lines up on the block.
Shoji said that on the 6:00 tv news this week (wed?)and also on the video posted on HawaiiAthletics done by the UH media.
Heard that twice this week on the news and UH site. I’m aware of the 2/1 LOH and RS system Shoji uses, but still the number of reps the RS gets relies much on your setter’s ability to backset and the pass. With that said the odd’s for 1 on 1 are in favor of the RS.
“I want to see my family and friends now
living across an ocean sucks )
What is weird is that her parents will be here next week for the tournament.
she seems really immature for a 21 year old.
so she’s “immature” because she misses her family and friends … dang, your standards for what constitutes mature are tough!
Today she’s complaining about not being able to see the Cardinals play because she has this “island problem.”
All she has to do is turn on the TV,I’m watching them right now on K-5
Hartong and Uiato, need to step in and have a talk with this girl, before her attitude becomes a detriment to the team.
over-reation here. her attitude is fine.
I think the jury is still out on the Big West helping recruiting.
why?
Shoji isn’t convinced either. but he likes the travel much better
Yea, the travel is great for everyone especially the parents.
Thing only thing being in the Big West might do, is keep Shoji from retiring, later then sooner, due to travel being much easier.
There is no question in my mind that the move to the big west will help Wahine recruiting. Jane is a prime example of someone who might not have opted for Hawaii without the promise of her mother being to see half of her matches. Dave said that himself.
Ron,
Jane Croson had already accepted a scholarship offer from Shoji, before UH was even excepted to be part of the Big West. Croson’s mom was only happy after the fact.
Jane already had her heart set on going to Hawaii in her junior high school year. At that time going to the Big West for the oly sports was already circulating.
Croson committed in Feb. 2010, UH announced it was going to the Big West in Dec. 2010. The fact that UH was going to offer sand volleyball played a big part in the decision. It was a tough choice after her brother was killed and she was the only child left.
I don’t think Kastl is being immature. She is just homesick. She doesn’t seem to be used to it. She went to college in the same state as her hometown so she could see her friends and family when she wanted to. She said it was one of the best decisions she ever made to come here so she must not hate it here.
vballfreak808,
So you think that “homesickness” will go away once the season starts and she hears the crowd at SSC?
Cindy,
You going to have something in your blog concerning the Green-White scrimmage, tomorrow?
Steve I am covering the green-white scrimmage. not sure if i’ll be blogging live or not. The story for the daily paper takes priority.
Kastl said this was the best decision she ever made but that was before practice started. She wanted a better program and she got it. I guess Hartong, Uiato, Goodman, Stauber, Vorster, and Tuaniga never got homesick enough to complain or maybe they just appreciated the opportunity that they were given.
actually Kastl told me it was the best decision she had made DURING a break in practice last week.
cyber stalkers over analyzing everything once again…
whats your solution? just kick her off the team? yeah let’s do it *rolls eyes*
Po’okela,
I am not worried, like I said, once the season starts, and she hears the SSC crowd, she will forget about being homesick. Oh, let me throw in also, the “aunties”, once she meets them, things will be just fine.
It’s “Slayed” by Overseer and NOT the other way around.
Get it right, lopelani.
(8-19-12) Diggin’ Na Wahine blogsite
People, really, she misses her home. GET OVER IT EVERYONE. Leave the poor girl alone.
Agreed. Give all of our ladies some space. Can’t wait to see what they bring.
What kind of person lurks through peoples face books, blogs, and etc. to check and report such trivial comments made by 20 yr. old kids. Note to Steve: Jane was wavering until the change was made.
What makes you think it came from any of these places ? Is it because you are one of those people ?
Ron,
Did not Jane sign during the early signing period, which was before UH held a press conference to announce they were accepted to the BWC? Maybe, Cindy can clear this up.
no steve, she did not sign early She signed in Feb.
2010
Well, we got flights leaving here everyday is all I can say.
That pyscho Vinny ( aka ladeda) at it again.
Sorry kastl family this pyscho has it out for Ash cause she ignored him on twitter lol, most wahine fans are glad she’s on the team! pay no mind to this pysho’s posts!
I’m thinking about suing you
jesse, deleted one of your comments. no vulgarity, even subtle.
Vinny, suing for libel would be very difficult since no one knows your real name.
I heard Wahine fans are tough and I didnt belive it coz im one of them until I started reading some of the entries here.
Quite frankly dissapointed with “Vinny” to have stated the said statements here who in the past I have shared a lot of the same opinions on this blog.
Give the girl a chance, she is far away from her family trying to proove herself to the world and probably still trying to fit in only to be chastised because she happened to share how she misses her fam amongst other things on her own twitter account. Way to show your Aloha spirit Vinny!
Oh and she reads this blog.
Beauston,
As you say, Kastl reads this blog, then this is for you girl.
If you have not met the “aunties” yet, just wait until you do. They will make you feel right at home. These ladies are quite remarkable. They will take care of you like one of their own, believe me. Hopefully, you will be able to meet them tomorrow, Saturday, during the booster club function.
Regarding Kastl being homesick, vballfreak808 is right. She is not being immature. What shes feeling is normal. She needs time to adjust to her new surroundings. Like some posters here have already said, this is Kastl’s FIRST TIME living away from what has always been familiar to her. So it is completely understandable for ppl like Kastl to have mixed emotions when they move and experience a new place, new ppl, new culture. Things can get overwhelming at times.
Kastl’s only been here since June. Give her a chance to adjust.
By tomorrow she’ll be on her god binge.
I came here as a 36-year-old and had a hard time adjusting. It’s natural to miss “home” regardless of your age. Give the girl some Hawai’i love and let her settle in.
I am proud she chose Hawai’i and wish her all the best.
Now you know why this Vinny/LC/Ladeda pyscho was banned from volleyalk!!
For your info I’m still on VT. Like I said I’m planning on suing you.
and as I said Vinny you cannot sue for libel unless you can prove defamation. and since your real identity is not posted it would be hard to prove.
Cindy, I am up for a live blog during the scrimmage. But it is obviously not my decision
sorry you may be up for it but I may not be able to. as i said, my priority is to the daily paper.
Cindy,
Not looking for a live blog during scrimmage, just a little recap would be fine. Just like you have been doing for their practices. If that is possible. Thank you.
hmm so Vinny creeps on young women online … and is also a bit of a racist.
why am i not surprised?
According to the IDAHO STATESMAN, the Idaho State Board of Education has approved noving their football program to Independant FBS status, and to begin negotiations with the Big Sky Conference for their men and women’s programs.
With UOP leaving the conference after this year, they may be wanting another program to bring it back to 10.
Sorry Cindy I’m not sure I get what you’re saying. San Diego State will replace Pacific as the tenth member in the BWC in 2013.
Oh, Idaho is applying to the Big Sky, not the Big West Conference.
Thank you LO. I knew SDSU was coming into the BWC, replacing UOP. My understanding is they want to keep it all-Califonrnia and UH is the perfect travel partner for SDSU.
New Mexico State is now the only WAC athletic program that hasn’t been able to find another home.
